Chapter 541
"I swear, there's something going on between those two," Madison said.
"I think so, too," I replied, deep in thought. "Looks like we've got to figure out what's really going on with them. By the way, did you snap anything useful while he wasn't looking?"
Madison flashed a sly grin, then pulled out a mini camera and waved it in front of me. "Don't worry. I didn't miss a page of those documents on his desk. We might find something once we get back and go through them."
"Nice work!" I said, impressed. "I thought you were just some clumsy escapee who broke out of prison."
Madison laughed and waved me off. "You're the brains behind this whole thing. So, what's our next step?"
I went quiet for a second, then slowly said, "Here's the plan-we hit this from two angles. First, we keep digging into Murphy's link with Kieran and see if we can find a way in. Second, we need to track down Ethan. I need to talk to him."
Just mentioning Ethan's name made my emotions all tangled up. He was the one I couldn't stop thinking about in my past life, someone I could never have. A mix of nerves and anticipation bubbled up inside me.
Noticing my tension, Madison tried to reassure me. "Don't worry, you're not in this alone. I've got your back. We'll get to the bottom of everything. Just make sure you stick to your word!"
I gave her a grateful smile. "Thanks, Madison. I always keep my word. You'll soon be free."
Over the next few days, we went our separate ways. Madison kept digging into Murphy, trying to figure out the connection with Kieran, while I quietly searched for any sign of Ethan, waiting for the right moment to reach out.
Finally, all my efforts paid off. One day, an informant told me that Ethan would be at a charity gala that night at a five-star hotel under his name.
I was thrilled and immediately called Madison, asking her to find a way to get us two invitations.noveldrama
That night, we showed up at the gala dressed to the nines and blended right in with the crowd.
The huge banquet hall was buzzing with lights, and the air was full of clinking glasses and a steady buzz of laughter. The place was packed with socialites and VIPs, all dressed to impress and caught up in tively conversation.
I spotted Ethan right away. He was in a sharp black suit, looking good and as cold and distant as ever. At that moment, he was holding a glass of champagne, chatting away with a middle-aged guy.
The man, probably in his 50s, had a bit of a belly but still carried himself with that unmistakable air of an executive.
I watched him closely, then it hit me. That was Yvan Jaeger, the current chairman of Jaeger Group. What was he doing here? Could he be connected to Ethan somehow, too?
I nudged Madison with my elbow and whispered, "Check it out, that's Yvan Jaeger! I can't believe he's here!"
Madison followed my gaze and let out a soft gasp. "Wow, what a lucky break. Looks like we've got our work cut out for us tonight."
I nodded, my eyes still locked on Ethan as I waited for the right moment to approach. Then, almost as if he sensed something, he turned, and our gazes met.
In that instant, it felt like time froze. My heart started racing, and I couldn't catch my breath. I was afraid he might recognize me.
What do you think?
