KNIGHT
I knew I was freefalling.
I dropped, crashing every bone in my body in a devastating impact, rattling my inside, cracking my skull, snapping my spine, and blood began flowing in my nose, from my mouth, from my ears. I felt all the pain in every cell in my body- it was indescribable, unfathomable.
The impact was like an earthquake- it shook everything around me, and the shockwave had the dust flying. At that moment, I knew I would not make it. Today, I was going to die. And I was going to die without saying goodbye.
One thing in life I learned was that death is inevitable.
But I was not ready. I would not accept my fate.
Struggling to move a finger, I silently howled in pain, but I was still grateful to be alive. My healing process seemed not to work anymore, or I was already dying, and no one could stop it.
They said you could not see your reflection in boiling water. Similarly, you could not see the truth in a state of anger. Now I saw the truth. The clarity came. I let my anger control me. No matter what the truth or the reason why my wife hid it from me, I might not have the chance to hear it from her.
I closed my eyes to open a link but knew it was broken. I was too injured.
The bright side was my senses worked. I felt my body was moving in a rush, or I was carried up. I could even hear murmurs. I listened to my heart beating, weak but beating. I was breathing shallowly, but nonetheless, it was a good sign.
I didn’t even have the scant strength to crack my eyes or open my mouth to say a word. But something felt different.
I couldn’t feel the intense pain anymore. What I felt was numbness, like I just received the most potent anesthetic. My entire body was numb.
A howl ripped through my throat.
“Easy, alpha. Hang in there. We’re almost home.” Those were the last words I heard before I blacked out.

“What the hell is going on?” My hearing seemed to heal well, or it was the last sense to lose before someone died. I could hear pissed-off Zarah shouting in the room. “I thought they had already left for their honeymoon.”
I felt water in my eyes. I didn’t realize I was crying, but I wasn’t in pain. At least physically.
I tried to reach out to Nirvana through my thoughts but couldn’t. It seemed like our connections were broken, but I could still feel her presence-the tingling on my skin, the beating of my heart-but it felt like she just blocked me.
“-Vana.” My mouth was parched. I could barely move my tongue. It felt like I’d been left to die in the desert.
“They fought. He ran off and fell,” Kailin explained.
“Fight? They just got married, and they’re already fighting. What made them fight that they ended up acting like rabid wolves?”
“The book.”
I heard Zarah breathe deeply. “Of course. I told her to tell Knight. And I guessed she did not, and he read the book. These two are the death of me.”
For a few moments, I felt a warm hand on my forehead. And then it was gone.
“What’s wrong with her?” Zarah asked.
“She’s in so much pain.” Shadow was here, too. They must have called them for help.
“What do you mean?” So many people were in the room, and they asked in unison.
“She did not fall,” Luka said. We were following her, and she ordered us to find Alpha. All of a sudden, she clutched her chest and screamed to stop something. That’s it. She’s been like that for about fifteen minutes. Her eyes were lucid, and she never moved since then.”
“Heal her if you can,” Zarah said. “I’ll try to get into this stubborn alpha’s head.”
“Nirvana.” I managed to form a word.
“What?” Zarah asked me. I could feel her close.
“Nirvana.” I felt her hand on my forehead, and I could hear Zarah in my thoughts.
“Talk to me, Knight. Can you hear me?” Zarah said calmly.
I somehow relaxed. “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. Please, help Nirvana.”
“Do you feel any pain?”
“No. Not anymore. All I feel is numbness.”
“We’ll do what we can. And we need to talk.” Zarah was gone in my thoughts.
“Nirvana took all his pain.”
“What? How is it even possible?” Dane was also in the room.
I wanted to open my eyes and go to Nirvana or talk to her to give the pain back to me. I could take the physical pain but not emotionally.
“Their connection, their bond, is stronger than anything I’ve ever felt. It’s what’s inside her that holds them together. Knight is okay.”
“I can’t,” Shadow said. “Something is blocking me.”
“You can’t heal her? Try Knight. Maybe it works on him,” Uncle Lennox suggested.
“You all should learn this lesson with your mates. Talking to your mates and communication always works. I know sometimes it hurts when you find out some secrets, but you know it’s not betrayal. Mates could never betray one another.”
“She couldn’t tell him because she knew it would hurt Alpha, but that was something that should be done. Maybe we can do something to stop her from getting killed. I don’t wanna lose my cousin, too.”
“How are you going to do that, Dylan? Change your gender?” McKaye asked sarcastically.
“I don’t know, Mac. I would have done it already if I could. She has a mate, and she’s happy with her life. She deserves to be with Alpha Knight. She has a life ahead of her. Not sacrificing herself for us.”
“We should call Case. He needs to be here by her side.”
“No. Case can’t know, or you just put a knife into the old man’s chest,” Luke told McKaye.
I felt hands on my chest, and then it got warmer and warmer, and it flooded all over me like someone had put a heating pad on me, tickling my skin. I felt it everywhere. All of a sudden, calmness spread through me, and it felt like I was wrapped in a warm blanket in winter.
“What was that?” That was the longest word I said, and I sensed everyone’s relief and anxiousness.
“Alpha?”
I cracked my eyes open to see brown eyes staring down at me. “You’re too close, Mac.”
He smiled, moving away. “How are you feeling?”
I looked around until I saw the familiar room. I was in the infirmary. I tried to move my body, but I was still weak. I turned my head to my left and saw Nirvana lying straight in bed. “I need to be with her.”
“You’re still weak,” Zarah said.
“I know, but I want to be with her. Please, help me.” I felt helpless, and the waiting was painstakingly slow. Nothing happened. Nobody moved or did anything. “If none of you will help me, I swear to Goddess, I will cast you all out.”
“Calm down, Alpha Knight. We’re moving your bed to hers.”
“Thank you, Dane.”
They scrambled to move things that got in the way. Then they pushed my bed towards Nirvana’s until our beds were next to each other’s.
I tried moving my hand, slowly lifting. Kailin went to the other side, took Nirvana’s hand, and put it on mine. I closed my eyes and tried to reach out to her through our link, but it was disappointing.
“I can’t connect to her.”
“Her power is blocking us. I can’t reach her thoughts, and Shadow can’t heal her, either, but I’m sure it’s helping her. Just have a little patience, okay? And no more running out to the woods like a feral animal.”
“It’s all my fault. I acted out of rage. Why did you not tell me, Zarah?”
“I told her to tell you, and she said she would, and it’s not my secret to tell, Knight. I’m so sorry, but you should know it’s been difficult for her to keep it from you.”
“I don’t want her to die, Zarah. I can’t. And I won’t let it happen.”ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
