Chapter 39
Chapter 39 Heartless me
I lifted her up into my arms and kissed her cheek.
"She couldn't come. She is really sorry. You will see her next time."
"Let me go." she shouted.
What she did after surprised all of us. She punched into my chest, and she wanted to break free of my hug, so I had no choice but to let her go. She stood opposite me and shouted at me. "Where is she?"
I didn't know what to do. Gemma stepped to her and squatted down. She tried to comfort her, but she pushed her away with incredible power, making her sitting in the grass.
"Leave me alone." She shouted. Seth came to us and held her, but she tried to get free from her dad's hug as well. I helped Gemma to get up.
"Let me go, where is Alice?" she shouted, and she cried. Seth had a meaningful look at me while he held Ava in his arms. This time, she let herself be held by his dad and he tried to calm her down.
"She just couldn't come, love." Seth tried to comfort her daughter, but the sit just came after that. The little girl leaned her head against his dad's
chest, and she looked at me.
"You, you don't like her, you don't let her be with me." She cried.
d I say to
What could I say to that? She only told the truth. Well, half of it. I moved closer, I caressed her cheeks.
"Ava, I promise you, you can see her. She is fine, but she really couldn't come today. If you'll be a good girl, I promise you, you can see her tomorrow. How is that?" I whispered into her ear, as I didn't want Gemma to hear that. Looking into her teary eyes, I could see she didn't trust me, which I hated to see.
She looked at me for a little while, then she spoke finally.
"Will you promise?" she asked.
I looked at Seth first, who nodded, then I looked at her.

"Yes."
She looked away, and she just hugged her father.
Seth's look told me he wanted to kill me that moment, and Leah's gaze wasn't different at all. I felt so guilty I nearly forgot about Gemma, who didn't like this scene at all. After stepping to her, I caressed her back, and I folded my arms around her waist to lead her to the table. Lpulled a chair out for her to sit down, which surprised the others more.
The situation just made me think of Alice again. I took my phone under the table, and I texted Sam to go into the house and check on Alice.
He texted me back shortly. She laid down, and she looked horrible, but she was fine. That hurt me more than anyone could imagine.
I wanted Gemma to vanish for at least a night, but she was so clingy. I didn't know how to do that, but that was the only way to comfort Alice, at least
We all sat down to have lunch. My family started chatting, and they mentioned Alice many times, I knew their intention. They wanted Gemma to feel unconsfortable. When they talked about Alice's kindness and beauty, I had enough, I stood up and motioned Gemma to do the same. They looked at me like they didn't understand.
"We have to go now. Thank you for the pleasant time."
"Gideon, you can't leave. It's a family event. You can't be out of it," my mum said, with a hint of disappointment in her voice.
I took a deep breath after Gemma put her palm on my shoulder. She thought I was doing this for her, and she wanted to comfort me, but what I really

wanted was to rush back home to Alice.
"Son, I know you two want to be together, but don't forget you are having a family, too."
"It's not about that. I still have something
to do and..."
"Oh, if that is about Alice, I might forgive you. You should have brought her here today. She probably feels bad. You took her home, when we could celebrate her beautiful performance. I hope she goes nowhere alone. I'm guessing she doesn't know LA much." My mum said, but to hear that I could see Gemma was fuming. She raised her head to look at my mother.
"Gideon gave her what she deserved, so don't worry about her going somewhere."
She said, and I could kill her, when everyone's attention was on me. I swallowed.

They looked at each other in disbelief. I could see they didn't like that at all. Especially Leah. She stood up and left the table. She played at the pool, and she left with her, telling her she needs to go inside to avoid being sick because of the sun. e went to Ava, who
"I think I got sunburn too. Excuse me," Sloane said with obvious anger in her voice, after she stood up as well. She followed Leah.
I felt terrible, but I had to continue the game. I only hoped one time, they would realise that I was only doing this for Alice.
"Okay. That was enough. We all know why Alice is with us, after all. Gideon, you stay, and that is an order." My dad said, and it made me feel worse than I was. Gemma smiled and nodded at him, satisfied.
We stayed, but I couldn't really focus on them. I mostly had my phone in my hand. I texted Sam to check on Alice, going out to the toilet every hour. They asked if I was sick, but I blamed the beer, which I only pretended I was drinking,
Gamma literally stuck to me. She wanted to be in my embrace all the time, which really annoyed me. Finally, when Ava came back from her nap, bringing her mum and Sloane back solved the problem. She wanted to play football. Me, Seth, my dad and Sloane joined her, and we had a good time. but even if they played with me, they didn't talk to me. I understood them as no one ever hurt a woman in my family.

"Gemma, our businesses are not like I can cancel an appointment and move it for another time." "But..."
"Gemma, my son is right, unfortunately if he has to go, then he has to go. Next time, you two will stay.
My dad said, which surprised me. He knew that exactly I had nothing to do, as we always worked together.
"I'll take you home, Gemma," I told her. She looked really disappointed, but she nodded. We said bye to everyone, and we sat in the car. We didn't really talk on the way back, but when she noticed I was driving to her place, she looked at me with a sudden move. "Gideon, why do you take me home?
