Chapter 39 Your Heart's Beating Really Fast
"Mr. Yates, should we continue investigating?"
This time, Edison did not hesitate for a moment, "Yes."
"..."
Gwenyth didn't sleep well that night, waking up twice from nightmares.
She dreamed that Luna Engles was waving a golf club in the hand and smashing it towards her head. She was beaten until her head was cracked open, collapsing in a pool of blood, barely breathing.
In the second half of the night, she didn't dare to close her eyes and kept them open until dawn.
In the morning, she prepared breakfast in the kitchen with dark circles around her eyes. Còntens bel0ngs to Nô(v)elDr/a/ma.Org
When Edison came downstairs and saw her looking listless, he went over and opened the fridge to get some water, taking the opportunity to greet her, "Good morning."
She turned her head to look at him, her voice hoarse, "Morning."
"Didn't sleep well?"
"Yea."
"Something on your mind?"
"No."
She seemed to be hiding something and didn't want to say it.
Edison knew he wouldn't be able to get anything out of her, so he didn't ask.
He handed the water to Gwenyth, who immediately helped him unscrew the cap of the mineral water bottle.
"My hand seems to smell."
Edison took a sip of water and then stretched out his plastered hand to Gwenyth.
She leaned in to smell it and indeed there was a smell.
On such a hot day, if it wasn't cleaned properly, his hand would probably smell bad when the plaster was removed a month later.
She pulled Edison out of the kitchen, pushed him towards the sofa, and then brought the first aid kit, sat down next to him, took a disinfectant cotton swab, and carefully wiped his hand.
Edison felt that his hand was already smelly and he was disgusted by the foul smell, but Gwenyth didn't seem to mind. She used many cotton swabs to carefully wipe his fingers, including the gaps between them.
He watched her quietly and thought of her being held captive last night. He couldn't help but ask, "Do you have a grudge against the Engles?"
Gwenyth's hand holding the cotton swab stiffened for a moment before shaking her head.
She still didn't want to say anything, and he knew he couldn't ask anymore.
After breakfast, Andy sent over several documents that needed to be signed. Edison went to the upstairs study and also had a video conference.
After finishing up, he asked Andy, "Did you find anything?"
"Not yet."
As the two of them walked downstairs, they found Gwenyth leaning on the sofa sound asleep, with a pillow in her arms and her head tilted on the armrest in an uncomfortable position.
Edison approached her quietly, took the pillow from her arms, one hand holding her shoulder, and gently lifted her onto the sofa.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Andy standing nearby, watching him. He coolly said, "Aren't you leaving?"
"I'll go, right away."
Andy hurriedly walked towards the entrance.
Stepping loudly on the marble floor with his leather shoes.
Edison frowned slightly, "Be quiet."
Andy immediately tiptoed and slowed down his steps, not making a sound.
When he left, he closed the door very gently, afraid of making any noise.
Edison sat on the coffee table facing Gwenyth, looking down at her. She wasn't snoring, sleeping very quietly with hardly any sound.
He reached out and tucked the stray hair on her face behind her ear. He sat there quietly, not saying a word, just watching her sleep.
She slept for several hours, and at four o'clock in the afternoon, her eyelids twitched as if she was about to wake up. Edison immediately got up and walked away.
He went into the kitchen, took out a bottle of water from the fridge, and found that Gwenyth hadn't woken up. She rolled over, facing the inside of the sofa, and continued sleeping.
He didn't want to disturb her. He liked watching her sleep.
But at this moment, his phone rang.
He quickly pulled out his phone from his pocket and answered it without even looking at the caller ID.
The ringtone only lasted two seconds, but Gwenyth had already woken up.
She climbed up in a daze and looked up to see Edison answering the phone.
The man walked towards her with long strides and sat down where she had just been lying, his eyes and eyebrows filled with a smile. "Are you coming back?"
"What time will you arrive?"
"Okay, I'll kill the fatted calf for you."
Gwenyth moved over a little and pulled away from Edison.
She looked at the clock on the wall and was surprised to find that it was already afternoon.
After Edison finished his phone call, she apologized, "I'm sorry, I fell asleep."
She hadn't cooked him lunch, and he was probably hungry now.
She stood up and said, "I'll go cook..."
Edison grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards him.
Still feeling a bit groggy from just waking up, she was suddenly pulled towards him with her body leaning against his chest, herself sitting on his lap.
"No need to rush, we'll go out to eat tonight."
"Do you have something to attend to?"
"Not really, just a friend coming back from afar."
Gwenyth nodded and sat up straight, wanting to get up from his lap, but he put his hand on her waist. "Can't we hug for a while?"
"..."
"You should be clingy now, and come to my arms."
Watching Edison acting like a pervert with a serious look, there's nothing Gwenyth could do about it.
She slowly leaned into his embrace, her cheek against his chest.
She didn't move, quietly listening to his heartbeat.
It was strong, even more intense than her own, thumping rapidly and forcefully.
"Are you nervous?"
She looked up at him.
He chuckled softly. "Why do you ask?"
"Your heart's beating really fast"
"..."
The next moment, he pushed her off his lap, and she was propelled onto the armrest of the sofa.
As she lay there, he smacked her butt and said, "Go upstairs and change your clothes."
As she lay there, he smacked her butt and said, "Go upstairs and change your clothes."
Rolling her eyes silently, she got up and headed upstairs.
Edison had arranged for a driver to pick them up. After he changed his clothes and Gwenyth finished her grooming, he took her hand and led her out, getting into the car.
He had already made a reservation at the restaurant, which was a private room on the second floor of a pub.
As they arrived, the door to the private room was pushed open by a man in a suit.
Edison's face lit up when he saw Issac Linberton, who he hadn't seen in a long time.
"You still remember to come back?"
He rose to greet Issac, hooking an arm around the man's shoulder.
Gwenyth watched as the person and Edison behaving to each other intimately. She felt familiar and soon remembered that she had seen this person before.
He was Edison's college classmate. Three years ago, she had visited Edison's school after leaving without saying goodbye, and it was the first time she had taken the initiative to seek him out.
On that day, he was graduating, dressed in a bachelor's gown, handsome and tall.
She wanted to congratulate him in person, but at that time he happened to be walking with Issac Linberton.
When he saw her, he immediately looked away as if she were a stranger.
He walked past her with a cold face, not even giving her an extra glance.
"Not gonna introduce me?"
Issac Linberton sat next to Edison and look over him at Gwenyth.
"Girlfriend."
Edison said with a smile.
Issac Linberton was a little surprised. "When did this happen?"
"Never mind me, how about you?"
Edison changed the subject and asked about Issac Linberton's recent situation.
"Didn't you like a girl and went to chase after her in another city? How come you're the only one who came back?"
This seemed to touch a nerve with Issac Linberton, and he made a stopping gesture to Edison, indicating that Edison to not ask any further.
"What, you didn't get her?"
