Chapter 50
Chapter 50
However, as soon as the lawyer started reading their contract, Jason realized just how wrong he was.
The old man stared at the way the lawyer browsed through every single word, encircling phrases that didn't make sense and underlining a few terminologies that were hard to decipher by the untrained eye. This man wasn't careless or dense; in fact, he was extremely professional and cautious.
The lawyer was none other than Arthur Knight. Although he looked young, he was very prudent when it came to contracts, and loopholes were his forte. He could spot anything from a mile away.
The corners of his lips tilted up at the sight of Jason 's surprised gaze. He was sure that the old man had been underestimating his skills the moment he had walked into the restaurant, but he didn't say a word.
"On Section 26 of the Shareholders' Contract..." Arthur immediately went into it, pointing out all the loopholes that he had caught. There were even superstitious phrases that he had listed out to better clarify it with the other party. "How about this one? Is this really what you mean?"
While Jason didn't know much about the terminologies, his lawyer's face had turned extremely pale. It was obvious that the other lawyer knew what he was doing. “About that, there must be some mistake..."
Seeing that his lawyer was struggling, Jason intercepted, “Alyssa, our company has been too busy lately, so it's only normal for our legal team to get a few details wrong."
Arthur however wasn’t convinced. "Even an intern could find a clear loophole, let alone your legal consultant who's been working for you for more than three years.” He sneered and continued. “Try to
come up with a better excuse next time before you try to reason your way out of this."
Alyssa blinked in surprise. She didn't think that the man beside her would be so bold as to go against Jason that easily. And how could he tell that the other party's lawyer had been working for more than three years?
Her lawyer was quite perceptive.
However, the surprise faded from her expression within nanoseconds as she leaned back against her seat. "Dad," she said gently, as a mocking smile slipped into her lips. "Maybe it's time for you to change your lawyer if he's that careless."
"Couldn't you be more professional?" Jason scolded at his lawyer, keeping up with this entire charade. After all, he couldn't let anything slip now. "You can't even draw up a transfer contract. What's the use of hiring you if you can't do this one thing right?"
"I'm sorry, Chairman." The lawyer bowed his head. "I was the one who made the mistake. I might have gotten out the wrong contract."
As he said this, he grabbed another contract from his briefcase.
Jason had been in the industry for so many years. Although he wasn't the most perceptive, he had grown the ability to adapt to different circumstances. He always had backup plans for nearly every scenario he could think of. Thankfully, this was one of them.
If Alyssa were to spot a loophole, he had another contract prepared that was free from it. However, he never really thought that he was going to use it.
Arthur looked over at the new share transfer contract before nodding at her. "This one has no problems."
"All right."
…
After she signed all the papers, Alyssa ordered two afternoon tea sets and packed them away in a take-out bag. Without another word, she said her goodbyes and left the restaurant. She didn't have anything left to say to Jason anyway.
As for the bill, Jason of course, paid for it.
As for the bill, Jason of course, paid for it.
Once they went out, she gave one of the tea sets to Arthur with a smile. "You've worked hard today. I can't thank you enough for this."
"It's really no problem."
Arthur usually didn't take on small cases like this, given how much of a big shot he was. But since Emmett was the one who had called him, who was he to say no to an old friend? Besides, her matter wasn't that troublesome anyway. It could be done within a few hours.
Plus, he also wanted to see how ugly the infamous Mrs. Lawrence was.
Although she was wearing simple clothes, she definitely wasn't ugly. In fact, she was actually beautiful.
With her large eyes and her creamy skin, he was certain that he caught a few other men glancing her way the moment they made their way into the room. Plus, with her outstanding temperament, Arthur could say that she was beautiful, both inside and out.
And whenever she smiled, her beauty was even further highlighted.
"Still, you must've been very busy, yet you still managed to help me. It's only fair that I treat you this tea." Alyssa could tell from his fierceness earlier that he must be a very powerful lawyer. Given his capabilities, she could tell that he must also have quite a busy schedule.
Upon seeing the sincerity in her eyes, he reached out to take the tea as well as the biscuits.
He could bring it back for Xavier to eat anyway. That man was like the reincarnation of a big. He'd eat anything as long as it was edible.
"I'll be going now." As soon as Alyssa left, Jason and his lawyer stepped out of Golden Fountain.
Jason looked ahead at the lawyer standing a few feet away from him. Not being able to help himself, he stepped towards the young man, curious as to where Alyssa had found such a good and perceptive attorney. "Sir, please wait."
Immediately, the soft smile faded from Arthur's features as he turned the older man. It was as if his indifferent and serious expression kicked in. "Mr. Moore, is there anything we need to discuss?" NôvelDrama.Org owns this.
"Ah, nothing." Jason coughed, suddenly feeling uncomfortable. "Do you mind if we have a cup of coffee together?"
"Sorry, but I don't have the time."
Jason wasn't as smart as his daughter. Obviously, being a lawyer, his time was far more expensive than any gold that was offered to him. That was the reason why Alyssa had offered him take-out rather than ask him to sit with her.
The lawyer behind Jason seemed unaffected by his words. "What's your surname, Sir?”
Arthur smiled. "Knight."
Without another word, he left.
"Knight..."
Suddenly, the lawyer clapped his hands in disbelief. "I knew it! Arthur Knight is one of the most popular lawyers in the corporate sector, the most vicious one. No one can win against him!"
Of course, Jason had heard of him before.
A few years ago, there was a lawsuit that had shaken the entire city. No lawyer wanted to take it up since it involved far too many parties and far too many scapegoats. Unafraid of the challenge, Arthur was the one who took it up in his sleeves. And that was the case that had given him his name.
The most powerful lawyer in Hoover City, how could Alyssa hire such a man?
It must be Emmett who had hired him for her!
Jason was originally bitter that he had transferred such a large number of shares to Alyssa, but as soon as he thought of this possibility, his mood became ten times better. The corners of his lips twitched up into a smile.
Since their relationship was so good, the probability of Emmett helping them increased tenfold! The 15% was worth it.
…
Arthur carried his takeout bag all the way to Nine Clouds Media.
As soon as he had arrived, he went straight into the CEO's office to look for Xavier.
Xavier had been working overtime recently. Ever since Emmett had appeared, his days had become even more exhausting. That was why he grew even more bitter upon seeing his workers coming in and out to take a breather.
The moment he saw Arthur coming in, he shot him a glare. "Where the hell did you go? Tell me, or I'll deduct your salary."
"Can you do such a thing?" Arthur raised his eyebrow.
Xavier pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose.
Arthur was a very powerful person. Everyone wanted to work with him, and as such, he was an incredible asset. Even if he wanted to, Xavier wouldn't dare to deduct his salary. Only Emmett would dare do such a thing.
Arthur placed the take-out bag on the man's desk. "For you."
As if suddenly rejuvenated, Xavier grabbed the drink and took a sip. "Did you buy it in Golden Fountain Club?"
Golden Fountain used to be a classic hotel meant for the rich and famous. That was until Emmett took over. Now, it was a luxurious clubhouse that held all the high-class amenities. Everyone wanted to be a part of it, but only a few were able to get in.
Ever since Emmett had been slacking off by not attending any of their shareholder meetings, Xavier took it upon himself to go to Golden Fountain Club every single day just to vent his anger. After all, everything he ate there was completely free. However, after eating there a thousand times, he lost his appetite.
Arthur shook his head. "Mrs. Lawrence gave it to me."
"Alyssa?" Xavier raised his eyebrows in surprise. "Why did she buy it for you? Holy shit, was she trying to seduce you? She went too far. You and Emmett had been close friends for so many years, and she finally has it in her heart to turn you into enemies? She is so vicious!”
Arthur stared at him. "Why don't you just join the entertainment industry and become a scriptwriter instead? Emmett can help you become famous.”
Of course, Xavier was just joking. He had seen Alyssa before. Although they weren't close, his intuition told him that she wasn't a bad person. In fact, her personality was quite good.
"Well, you've seen her, haven't you? Doesn't she look so ordinary? Yet our Emmett looks at her as if he's addicted to her or something!" Xavier shook his head. He didn't really have any prejudices against the two, but he couldn't help but find it odd that Emmett would show interest in her in the first place.
There was a brief silence before Arthur admitted, "She's actually quite pretty."
"What did you just say?"
Were they blind? What had their taste of beauty come to?
