Chapter 9: Mrs Maynard Is A Force To Be Reckoned With

It was common knowledge that the late Mr Maynard had passed on everything he owned to Mrs

Maynard before he died. His assets included two boxes of priceless antiquities. To sum it up, Mrs

Maynard was a force to be reckoned with.

It would be unwise to offend her.

"You're the most respected elder in the Maynard family, grandma," Henry spoke up suddenly. His tone

was less chilly now. "We all wish you a long and healthy life. Don't get too worked up."

"Grandma, Henry is right." Luz quickly got up and walked over to Mrs Maynard. She brought a bowl of

soup with her and said with a smile, "Grandma, have some soup as an appetizer first. I'll accompany

you to the garden for a walk after dinner later."

For the sake of Luz, the old lady relaxed her frown and nodded. "Okay. Thank goodness for you, Luz."

Henry glanced at Luz, then looked away quickly.

This topic finally came to an end.

After dinner, Luz took a stroll in the back garden with Mrs Maynard.

Mrs Maynard did not know the full story behind Luz's divorce from Henry. She held her hand and kept

blaming Henry while implying that she hoped Luz could forgive her grandson.

Luz pursed her lips in a smile and kept changing the subject subtly.

They talked in the garden until ten o'clock at night. When Luz realized it was very late, she said her

goodbyes and left. Mrs Maynard wanted her to stay for the night, but after Luz's protests, she relented.

"Grandma, you can go back in now. Someone is coming to pick me up," Luz said. However, the old

lady did not listen to her. She covered her shoulder with a cloak and insisted on walking her out of the

house.

A black Maybach was parked at the door quietly.

A tall and elegant man leaned against the car in an image of casual debauchery. There were several

cigarette butts scattered around his feet.

"Henry, you're still here?" Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.

When she saw Henry, the old lady was stunned at first. She pulled Luz over to him and said with a

smile, "It's getting late, why don't you send Luz home?"

It was not an inquiry, but a direct order.

Luz frowned at her words. "No, I'm good, Grandma, I can get home myself."

"It's so late. There's no need to trouble someone else to come and pick you up," the old lady said as

she pushed her towards Henry. "Henry is going back to the city as well, so he can drop you off on the

way as well."

Luz was pushed so hard that she was caught off guard and fell against Henry.

He could smell the faint scent of mint off her.

Flustered, Luz pulled herself upright and stepped away from his embrace. She did not notice him

gazing intently at her before throwing his cigarette onto the ground and putting it out with his feet.

"Okay, grandma. Don't worry, I'll send her back."

Henry bend down and opened the car door for Luz as an invitation as she stood there dumbfounded.

Mrs Maynard smiled. "Luz, don't forget to text me when you get home."

Luz was not sure what to do. After hesitating for a while, she sighed and said, "Okay then, goodbye,

grandma. I'll come to see you when I'm free." Then, she got into the car.

"Okay, okay!" The old lady nodded with a smile, then turned to Henry. "Drive carefully," she said coldly.

"I don't care if you get hurt in an accident, but don't endanger Luz."

Henry hummed noncommittally, got into the driver's seat, and started the car.

The car drove off into the night.

The two of them were silent in the car.

After a while, Luz's phone rang and broke the silence. She picked up her phone. "Declan."

"Where are you now? Should I go pick you up?"

"... No, it's fine." Luz glanced quickly at Henry and continued gently, "I'll be home in 15 minutes. Is

Logan still with you?"

Declan chuckled and said pleasantly, "He wanted to have pizza, but fell asleep after eating one slice."

Luz laughed when she thought of her cute son. "Thanks, Declan. Sorry for the trouble."
