Chapter 727 Shock
Chapter 727 Shock
Skylar could not care less whether the house was demolished or not. She was indeed reluctant to part with Meredith's previous residence, but she had never requested Tobias to avoid that area during the demolition. At that moment, she felt aggrieved.
As soon as Skylar stepped into the house, she was hit by a pungent tobacco stench. Ximena's family members were sitting in the living room, all of whom Skylar recognized.
Those men had watched her grow up since she was little. No one wanted such an accident to happen, and even at that point, Skylar still hadn't recovered from the shock.
When Tobias saw Skylar walking in, he paused in his speech and invited her over in a gentle voice. She naturally sat down on the couch next to him.
Little did she know that her appearance there was what Tobias desired least. However, he blamed himself for not having the time to remind her as he had been swamped with work.
Skylar tightened her grip on the strap of her bag. She looked at the photos hanging on the already yellowing walls. They were all taken by Ximena when she was alive.
An enlarged image featured Ximena with the staff where she went for physiotherapy. Her smile was radiant in that picture.
Skylar knew Ximena had believed in that type of physiotherapy health product when she was alive. She would spend a lot of money on them every year. Eventually, she even quit playing poker and used all her pensions to purchase those items.
Her sons had no complaints about her spending habits and were considered filial. Skylar knew them quite well. They were friendly but not adept at cracking jokes or making small talk with others.
Never in her wildest dream did she imagine Ximena would meet such an end. All of this happened because of money and people's insatiable greed.
Skylar forced back her tears, trying not to cry. Seeing she was in distress, Tobias placed his large palm over the back of her hand and held it tightly. She felt his burning hot skin and noticed his pale face.
As night fell, his fever, which had subsided in the morning, was recurring. Copyright by Nôv/elDrama.Org.
Tobias uttered, “It's good that Skylar is here. I want to clear things up with all of you. Skylar has been under a lot of pressure recently. Some people with ulterior motives spread rumors about me not demolishing this area because of Skylar, and this caused everyone to place their blame on her. You're also trying to blame Skylar for your mother's death. I can't stand to see this. I'm a businessman, so do you think I would do such irrational things for a woman? All my decisions and actions stem from my interest in gaining more profit. Harbourside was never included in the development plan. Besides, the government also intervened and warned us this plot of land cannot be razed.”
Skylar suddenly felt that Tobias' acting skills could rival an award-winning actor's. She couldn't tell which parts of his speech were true and which were false. I've never heard about this area being under government intervention. He's helping me to clear my name.
Tobias' tone was serious and professional.
“My daughter has no say in the company's decision. I don't know who's spreading these hearsays.” Miranda also entered and spoke up, painting Skylar as a victim while simultaneously pushing the responsibility onto Ford Group.
Skylar sat in silence, knowing it was best to keep her mouth shut in that situation and let Tobias handle the problem.
Previously, she would have explained whenever people asked, but now she was tired of doing so since nobody would believe her no matter how much she said.
Ximena's death was a reality. Her eldest son, Shaun Zacoski, extinguished his last cigarette. They should've been busy with his mother's funeral arrangements at that time. Deep down, he knew he was being unfilial, but he couldn't resist the opportunity to make some money out of the situation.
Tobias' willingness to go there in person was a demonstration of his sincerity.
Shaun was just clueless about how he should initiate the conversation about compensation.
