Chapter 187
Chapter 187
Sylas inadvertently reminded, “Seems like she does care about Ms. Floretta. Look at how happy they are.”
Evander shot him an icy glare and said with irritation, “When have you become so talkative?”
“Sorry about that, Mr. Golding.”
Sylas immediately bowed apologetically as cold sweat drenched his back. “Are we still going in?”
Evander thought about it for a while before answering in a deep voice, “No need. We’re returning to the office.”
Ever since the incident at the swimming pool, he assumed he was the last person Angeline wanted to see.
Initially, he postponed his schedule and rushed over as he was concerned no one would attend Floretta’s parent-teacher conference. However, he had no reason to worry now that he saw her having so much fun.
Sylas immediately made to follow him. The former then suddenly thought of something and said carefully, “Mr. Golding, I heard that people in school have been laughing at Ms. Floretta for not having a mother. I’m afraid her mental health would be affected if this continues.”
Upon hearing that, Evander stopped in his tracks. His expression darkened, and his voice was solemn as he said, “Why didn’t you say so earlier? Who started it?”
“I heard it’s Mark who started it.”
Evander furrowed his brows. “Is he the kid from the Sherrock family?”
“Yes.”
Evander’s gaze turned increasingly frosty when he heard Sylas’ reply. A chilly and menacing aura emanated from his towering build.
Seeing that, Sylas couldn’t help gulping fearfully. An inexplicable ominous feeling assailed him.
Looks like the Sherrock family would be in huge trouble this time.
Meanwhile, Angeline finished playing her piano piece. With one hand holding Floretta’s hand and the other lifting the hem of her skirt, she bobbed a curtsy to the audience.
“Thank you, everyone. That’s the end of our performance.”
Floretta’s clear voice rang out with a tinge of pride.
At that instant, a loud round of applause exploded among the crowd. Everyone was delighted by the performance, and Olivine was the only one who was sulking.
Originally, she had wanted to come here and wait for Evander so that she could speak with him.
However, he didn’t appear even after the parent-teacher conference had ended. Worse still, she was forced to watch Angeline’s outstanding performance.
She wouldn’t have attended if she knew things would turn out like this.
Mark, acting all high and mighty, glared at Floretta enviously as he said in disdain, “Hmph? What’s the big deal?”
Frightened by his presence, Floretta dared not rebuke him.
Angeline was displeased upon seeing the way Mark was behaving. She pulled Floretta into her embrace and glanced at Olivine indifferently. Her lips curled into a smirk, indicating she wasn’t a pushover.
“Ms. Sherrock, your nephew is already a bully at such a young age. I wonder how he will turn out when he grows up. You’d better educate him. If Evander finds out about this, it will only do you more harm than good.”
The nerve of her to bring up Evander!
Olivine needed an outlet to vent her anger at that moment. Just as she was about to refute Angeline, her phone rang in her bag.
She took out her phone and answered the call with an irritated tone. “What is it?”
“Ms. Sherrock, something bad happened! Golding Group suddenly withdrew all their investments in Sherrock Group. Mr. Mark was also expelled from school. Old Mr. Sherrock is beside himself with anxiety. You should come back and take a look!”
“How is that possible?”
Olivine gripped her phone tightly, stunned. She then mumbled in disbelief, “Does he not care about our past relationship?”
It was just a squabble among children, but Evander decided to burn all bridges with them. He didn’t even care about the long-standing relationship between the two families.
Mark, who knew nothing about the family’s current predicament, grabbed Olivine’s hand and asked excitedly, “Aunt Olivine, are you talking to the butler? Did he instruct the kitchen to make chicken nuggets for me?”
“Seriously? All you care about is food!”
Olivine grew irritated upon looking at her nephew’s innocent demeanor. What a good-for-nothing!
Without a second to spare, she quickly grabbed Mark’s hand and departed in a rush, not even pausing to inform the teacher.
Everyone was puzzled and started gossiping among themselves.
Angeline furrowed her brows. Only when she heard Olivine mumble the phrase “past relationship” did she realize what was happening.
Evander must have found out that Floretta was bullied in school and decided to take action.
Floretta had always been his precious treasure. Therefore, he kept the little girl’s identity a secret from the school because he feared people might view her differently.
However, that created an opportunity for some people to bully her.
Olivine was a careful person. Nevertheless, she had underestimated how important Floretta was to Evander.
It seemed the Sherrock family was going to suffer a massive loss this time.
Everyone left when the parent-teacher conference ended. Meanwhile, Floretta was unwilling to part with Angeline.
Also reluctant to part with the little girl, Angeline could only give Francesca a call and ask if Floretta could spend the night at her place.
To her surprise, Francesca agreed to it readily as if someone had already given her instructions beforehand.
Angeline brought Floretta to the supermarket to buy some groceries so she could make a meal for them when they returned home. Since there were only two of them, Angeline decided to make a simple
dinner.
There were still many leftovers after their meal.
Angeline had planned to take Floretta for a stroll in the park. However, she was interrupted by a phone call from the hospital. It was from the people she arranged to monitor the situation in the hospital.
“Ms. Sorelle, Old Mr. Sorelle did not have any visitors these past few days. You can come over.”
“Okay. Thank you.”
Angeline hung up the call and pursed her lips, for she realized that something was amiss.
Grandpa is currently critically ill, and he needs someone to look after him twenty-four-seven. How come no one’s by his side?
After much pondering, the concerned Angeline packed the remaining food into thermal containers and brought Floretta to the hospital. Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.
When they arrived, Angeline noticed there was not a single person along the corridor Wilfred was staying in. It was utterly deserted.
She pushed open the door and entered the ward with Floretta.
The curtains were tightly drawn in the room. Therefore, the room was dark even though the sun was blistering outside.
Angeline covered her nose as she caught a whiff of the pungent smell of medicine mixed with rotten food.
Joseline must have dismissed all her subordinates because she’s tired of Old Mr. Sorelle and wants him dead as fast as possible!
Angeline tried to contain the hatred welling in her heart as she walked over to pull the curtains open. Immediately, the room brightened up.
Wilfred was lying unconscious in bed. He appeared to have aged substantially since Angeline last saw him, sporting a head full of white hair. Angeline felt her heart clench when she noticed how thin he had gotten.
When she looked at him, she found it hard to associate him with the energetic old man she had seen at his own birthday banquet not long before.
He had always been a prideful person. No one would have thought he would end up in such a wretched state.
At this moment, Wilfred jolted awake from his slumber. His eyes turned toward where Angeline was. Although he could not see, he instinctively called out, “Angeline? Is that you?”
Angeline felt a lump in her throat when she heard him call her name. She hastily walked over to his bedside.
