Chapter 136
Chapter 136
When Evadne got back to her private villa, it was already the crack of dawn.
Nydia had been worried sick about her sister, staying up all night. Her eyes were red and swollen, and it looked miserable.
“Nydia, don’t beat yourself up. I’m fine. Don’t you have cla**es tomorrow morning? Get some sleep.” Evadne sat next to Nydia, giving her a hug.
“Evadne, am I useless? You’ve always protected me when we were little, but now that I’m grown up, I can’t do anything.” Nydia pouted, her eyes brimming with tears.
“What kind of nonsense are you talking about?” Evadne gently knocked on her head. “Because of you and Myra, our home is filled with harmony. You’re the baby sister that we all adore. You are like our own little mascot. If you really want to do something for me, then go and chase your dreams. When you make it big in the entertainment industry. I’m going to have you endorse my products. That way, I can save some money. Sounds good, right?”
“Evadne, I believe in myself. I’ll definitely make it!” Nydia wiped her tears, nodding fervently.
After a quick wash, Nydia fell asleep almost instantly as soon as she hit the pillow.
Evadne tucked her in before leaving the room.
In the study. Jason was already waiting for her.
“Tonight, Acacia was sent to the hospital for some reason. Have you found out?” Evadne’s eyes turned cold as she asked, sitting on the sofa.
“We found out. Acacia attempted suicide. She slit her wrists but was saved in time. She’s out of danger now.” Jason paused, a glint of coldness in his eyes, “and Thaddeus has been by her side the whole time.”
“Well that’s a no–brainer. Acacia almost killed herself for him. Even if he’s a corpse, he’d have to stick by Acacia’s bedside.” Evadne said carelessly, not bothered at all.
“Ms. Evadne, what is your take on this Acacia situation?”
“Acacia attempting suicide has got to be the funniest joke I’ve heard all year.”
Evadne leaned back on the sofa, rubbing her temples. “She hasn’t even become the CEO’s wife yet, and she hasn’t killed me off yet. How could she bear to die? Also, those who truly want to die wouldn’t be found, otherwise, it’d be pretty embarra**ing if they fail.”
“So, you’re suggesting that Acacia is trying to pressure Thaddeus?”
Jason frowned in confusion, “But why? Isn’t she about to marry Thaddeus? Could it be… Thaddeus doesn’t want to marry her anymore? So she’s threatening him with suicide.”
Evadne felt a pang of unease, “Who knows. Maybe he’s engaged to one woman but has his eyes on another. I’ve already been dumped. Maybe Acacia would be his next target. Thaddeus is a playboy after all. It wouldn’t surprise me who he ditches next.”
“That makes sense, but I still hope they can get married smoothly and live their lives without hurting others!”
Jason ground his teeth in anger, then asked, “Ms. Evadne, who do you think sent the man who had a beef with you tonight? Could it be Elspeth? She’s still being detained by Mr. Thaddeus. She wouldn’t have time for this.”
“He’s a foreigner.” Evadne’s eyes darkened, “He’s a fighter, and he’s very agile. He’s like an underground boxer. Although he doesn’t have a fixed style, his attacks are very practical. Elspeth doesn’t have the time, and Glynnis wouldn’t know such people. Only Acacia fits the bill. She’s lived abroad for three years and her social circles are complex. She’s had close relationships with many men. It wouldn’t surprise me if she’s got a few simple–minded, strong–bodied men doing her bidding.”
Jason was taken aback, finding Ms. Evadne’s analysis quite convincing.
“As for why that man had a grudge against me, guessing here won’t get us anywhere. We’ll just ask him tomorrow and we’ll know.”
Evadne suddenly leaned forward, “Oh right, you didn’t let anything slip to Ca**ius, did you?”
Jason sighed helplessly, “Ms. Evadne, I wouldn’t dare disobey your orders. I didn’t reveal anything to President Ashbourne.”
Evadne breathed a sigh of relief, “That’s good.”
Just as she finished her sentence, her phone started ringing.
The name “Ca**ius” on the screen made Evadne’s heart race.
She quickly grabbed her phone, but she didn’t answer.
Then, Jason’s phone rang, but he had to answer!
“President Ashbourne, what can I help you with?” He tried to keep his voice steady.
“Put Evadne on the phone.”
Jason didn’t put the call on speaker, but Ca**ius’s voice was so deep it echoed, making Evadne’s heart pound!
“Ms. Evadne has already gone to bed, President Ashbourne.”
“Jason, you’re getting bolder. Are you starting to team up with her to lie to me?” This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - ©.
Ca**ius rarely lost his temper, but when he did, it was terrifying, “I’ll say it one more time, put Evadne on the phone, or come daybreak, you’re no longer Ms. Evadne’s secretary!” Evadne’s heart was thumping like crazy. Fearing the worst, she quickly took the phone, her voice soft, “Ca**ius.”
Ca**ius took a deep breath, as if trying to suppress some emotion. He said in a low voice, “Evadne, come out, I need to ask you something.”
With a racing heart, Evadne walked out of the villa’s front gate.
Under the soft street lights, Ca**ius stood expressionless in front of a black luxury car.
He was dressed in a grey suit. Standing under the lights, his tall figure and perfect body were attractive.
What a hunk that Ca**ius was, but right now Evadne was scared witless seeing him.
“Ca**ius.” She tiptoes towards him and whispers.
“It’s chilly tonight. You should get in the car first.”
Without a second thought, Ca**ius slips off his jacket and wraps it around the frail figure of Evadne before ushering her into the car.
11:06
The siblings sit in the back seat, and Ca**ius couldn’t contain himself any longer. He grabbed her shoulder and anxiously asked, “Where did the bastard hurt you?”
“My arm.”
Evadne couldn’t lie anymore. She lowered her head like a child who had done something wrong.
Ca**ius turned pale, his breath trembling as he gently touched her petite arm, slowly rolling up her sleeve.
Upon seeing the white bandage, his eyes instantly well up.
“It’s okay. The wound isn’t deep and it doesn’t hurt now.” Evadne quickly explained, seeing her brother’s concern.
Ca**ius went go of her sleeve and then grabbed her slightly cold hand.
Evadne’s hand hurt from his grip. She felt uneasy and guilty, lowering her head, “I’m sorry, Ca**ius. I shouldn’t have kept it from you, but I thought I could handle it, I just didn’t want you to worry about me.”
After a moment of silence, Ca**ius, with reddened eyes, said word by word, “Whoever hurt my little sister will pay.”
Evadne’s pupils shrank, her heart pounding.
She looked at Ca**ius in front of her. He used to be a bad guy, a fearsome leader of dark forces. Even though he had changed now, at this moment, she saw the fearsome him again.
“Ca**ius, I know you want to take revenge for me, but you promised me.”
Evadne held him tight, her cheek against his chest, “You’re back with me now. We should start a new life and not get involved in those things anymore. That guy is just a pawn. No matter what we do to him, the puppet master will still get away scot–free. Ashbournes are sharp. Since the enemy has given us such a big handle, we should exploit it instead of wasting it.”
Hearing this, the murderous look in Ca**ius’s eyes faded. He took a deep breath and picked up a paper bag from the co–driver’s seat and handed it to Evadne.
“Check out what’s inside.”
Evadne opened the bag and saw the documents inside. She was taken aback, “This is?”
“Jason has already told me about that guy. He’s more eager to catch the puppet master than you are, so he asked for my help.”
Ca**ius suppressed his rage, “He didn’t tell me about your injury, always beating around the bush!”
“It’s me who asked him not to tell. He was also in a tough spot, don’t blame him.” Even though Evadne was a bit resentful, she still defended Jason.
“If it happens again, I’ll send him back to the Dempsey family.” Ca**ius’s eyes were icy, intimidating.
Evadne didn’t dare to speak. She just watched silently.
Even though Evadne was usually very a**ertive and even dared to defy Emeric, when Ca**ius got angry, she became docile and didn’t dare to say a word.
Evadne carefully read the information about the unfamiliar man.
Suddenly, her eyes popped, and she exclaimed in surprise, “It’s him!”
