Chapter 76 Joseph Is Efficient
“I came back to clean up your mess, you idiot.”
Chloe was speechless.
“I feel terrible right now. Why can’t you say something nice to comfort me?” Chloe said.
Seated gracefully on the chair beside the bed, Joseph crossed his legs and leaned in, placing his large hand gently on top of Chloe’s head. Although his touch was as soft as if he were stroking a cat, his tone was arrogant as he spoke, “I won’t offer you comfort, but I do have the ability to save you.”
Both of their gazes met. Chloe inexplicably felt that his words made perfect sense. A true man never spoke in a flowery language but takes direct action and is decisive.
In that instant, she was awash by a surge of gratefulness and said solemnly, “Thank you.”
“You should solve your problems as soon as possible. That would be the real gratitude toward me,” he replied. Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org exclusive © material.
Every now and then, she found herself in trouble. Though she could handle it, her body was no longer able to bear the strain.
When Chloe heard what Joseph said, she thought he implied she was a burden. Or perhaps he had received some news and knew about her relationship with Jake.
‘That’s right, we have no blood or family ties. Even our marriage is fake. There’s no need for him to care about me at all.’
Chloe pursed her lips and spoke with determination, “I will.”
Since the Johnsons did not treat her like a human being and they even went to the extent of claiming the assets her mother left for her as theirs, she felt that she did not need to be soft-hearted anymore.
As for Joseph, she would try her best and leave the rest to fate.
Joseph looked at the time and asked, “Have you decided? Do you want a caregiver or are you asking a friend for help?”
“I’ll call my friend.”
It was awkward to ask a stranger for help with something as private as going to the toilet.
“Okay.”
“By the way, do you know any lawyers? I want to sue someone,” Chloe asked Joseph
before he left.
He paused but did not turn around. “I’ll have Lucas send you the contact information.”
“Okay, thank you.”
After Joseph left, Chloe lay on the bed motionless, staring blankly at the drip bag in the upper right corner.
In the afternoon, Emily received Chloe’s text and rushed over anxiously. Upon seeing Chloe’s pale and tired appearance, her eyes welled up with tears. “Why did you only tell me now?”
“I told you as soon as I woke up. Wasn’t that fast enough?”
“How could Peter do this to you? How could he team up with Ava to bully you?”
Chloe shook her head. “Peter is probably a victim too.”
“I don’t care. Nothing happens for no reason. He’s at fault, as your contractual husband said. Let the police lock him away for a few years. It’d be best to also throw Ava in jail to prevent her from doing anything immoral!” Emily said exasperatingly.
Karen and Ava had been bullying Chloe since she was a kid, and now they wanted to take away the assets that Chloe’s mother had left for her.
They were just shameless!
Chloe fell silent for a moment and asked, “You know why Ava brought Melody and
Peter into this?”
Emily paused and said, her voice thick with disbelief, “Are you saying she’s looking for a scapegoat?”
“Yeah…”
Like Karen, Ava was also a selfish person. Judging from what Ava did to her in the past, Chloe surmised that she had always intended to make Melody her scapegoat.
“She’s so scary,” Emily said with a frown, “It’s unlucky to be her friend.”
“Birds of the same feather flock together. Melody isn’t a good person either.”
“Of course not,” Chloe said, her face cold and resolute. “Ava and Jake’s engagement party will be held in a few more days. That’s the time when I’ll fight back.”
Joseph came almost every day to visit Chloe for the three days she was hospitalized.
After she regained her strength and could take care of herself, she did not need Emily’s help anymore and asked Emily to return to work. They made plans to meet up again. when she was discharged.
Time flew by, and it was already the day of Ava and Jake’s engagement. In the early morning, Chloe kept glancing at Joseph, sitting on a chair, debating whether or not to reveal her true identity to him.
After all, he would be present at the engagement party later that day, and it would be better to give him a heads up and prepare him for the truth. However, she was worried that he might try to stop her since Jake was his nephew.
Joseph put down his phone and rubbed his temples. “Just tell me what’s on your mind. Don’t give me that look.”
