Marrying my high school bully

An agreement

Melissa

A meeting with my doctor was one of the things I tried to avoid, but after indulging my cravings and enjoying a passionate night with Dexter, it became paramount to see Doctor Swan.

She was my gynecologist and the only woman I was comfortable with telling one of my few secrets which excluded my past. I couldn’t stand the risk.

“Miss Rogers, it’s good to have you here again.” She gave me a warm hug and I lowered myself onto the chair opposite her desk.

I smiled in return and let out a sigh. “I honestly didn’t know that I’d be back so soon,” I confessed.

Her eyes narrowed with a questioning stare. “Something happened?” She probed and my cheeks got heated.

“I had sex and we didn’t use protection.” I replied with a rush, my body heating up at the reminder of how he poured his seed inside of me without fear.

I was beginning to think that he did it on purpose, but what could that mean if he also didn’t want a relationship with me? I shoved the thoughts aside as thinking about my situationship with Dexter caused me a headache.

“You don’t seem to be nervous.” She noted.

“It’s surprising, right? I just have a tiny bit of hope that something good can come out of what happened.” It wasn’t embarrassing to tell her the truth because she was invested in making sure that I got better.

She leaned closer to me after glancing at her computer. “After our last appointment, I went through the tests we conducted on you and I can record some improvements in your organs, Miss Rogers.”

I became alert, my chest drumming with anticipation. “What exactly are the improvements?” I cried almost desperately.

“You can have a child even though the odds are not really on the bright side. But if it eventually happens, you will have to protect it from every form of stress because it’s risky to have one when your womb is still undergoing repair.”

My eyes churned with happy tears as hope seared through me. I couldn’t hold it in so I got up and paced around in her office.

My eyes reeled inside my head as I recalled her words over and over again. It felt like I was in a different world and someone had performed a miracle in my body.

“Are you being serious, Doctor Swan? I can have a child?”

She raised her hand, her face tight with a serious smile. “I didn’t mean to raise your hopes too high, I was just saying that there is a slight possibility and if you ever get pregnant, you’ll have to be careful.”

“You don’t need to tell me because I’ll surely be careful.”

She nodded and brought out a jotter. I watched her scribble furiously on the pad while I tried to calm myself.

After a while, she tore out a piece of paper and passed it to me. “You’ll need to get more of these drugs from the pharmacy because they are vital to your system’s recuperation.”

The drugs she talked about actually cost a fortune to those who didn’t have the money, but to me, it was like a drop in the bucket. What mattered to me was that I’d be able to have a child.

“I won’t hesitate to get them.” I slipped the paper into my bag and got to my feet. “Thank you so much, Doctor.”

“It’s no problem.”

I left the office with excitement and relief and found myself heading towards a cafe where Mrs. Gonzales and I were to meet. I needed her help and for her to give it to me, I’d have to earn her trust.

The cafe wasn’t too far from the hospital so I got there some minutes later and parked my car. I went in and searched for Mrs Gonzales who told me that she was already waiting for me.

Gone were the days when I enjoyed some peace at home after concluding a modeling job. Now my life rotated around one thing. Revenge.

We both exchanged pleasantries when I got to her then made our orders.

“You wanted to know who I am and I’ll tell you everything you need to know, provided that whatever we discuss remains between us until I’m ready to reveal the truth to the whole world.”

She nodded, her expression still wary. I didn’t blame her because I’d feel the same way if I were her.

“I’m too old to be sharing people’s secrets, and I’d like to know why you’re suddenly interested in Hills Jewelry.”

“I never knew about my inheritance until the day Leonardo kidnapped me,” I confessed and a very loud gasp escaped her lips.

“Sarah never told you? Why did she do that?” She whispered harshly as if she was speaking to her friend.

It was the same question I kept asking myself. Why didn’t she take me somewhere serene and tell me about what she had? Why did she allow me to suffer when I had a large amount of money that could take care of my needs comfortably?

Completing high school was a struggle and getting a college degree was the hardest challenge I had to go through, but I did it out of resilience and thank heavens it paid off.

“I don’t know why she did it, but what matters is that I’m going to get back what he stole from me, together with his daughter.”

I spilled the details of how he connived with his daughter to kidnap me at my wedding, then made me sign a document, transferring all my inheritance to him. I skipped Victoria’s story and Stella’s disappearance since it wasn’t important.

“You go by the name Melissa but your mother named you Lorraine. I still remember that even though I didn’t get to see you that much.” She pointed out and I wondered again why Mother was so secretive.

I admired Rosa’s bluntness and quick wit. Having someone like her around meant that she would always catch up on little details.

“Melissa is my middle name and I had to change my face so that I’d be able to plot my revenge without being noticed.”

I scanned her face for any iota of doubt and I found none which made me satisfied because I knew that I’d gotten another helper.

“I want to ask you a question and I hope you don’t mind,” I said softly.

“I’m all ears, child.”

I took in a deep breath and held her hands. “Did you know that my mother was married to Leonardo?”

She looked away, her eyes flickering with hurt. “I didn’t know who she got married to because it was all hushed, but I knew deep down in my heart that she married the wrong man.”

I became alarmed. “How?”

“Her work ethic changed and she became lazy. She even stopped me from coming to visit her. Each time I tried to warn her, she trivialized it and told me that she had everything under control until she died. I didn’t even know that she was dead.” Tears were already flowing from her misty eyes. “I don’t know what caused her death because I knew that she wasn’t ill, but I couldn’t investigate further because the case was closed. I tried to get to you but since you already had a stepfather I had to mind my business.”

With a dark smile, I said. “Leonardo killed my mother. She killed your friend.”

“Oh God,” She melted, sobbing heavily at the revelation.

“He knew that my mother was rich and had a company but he didn’t know how to access it so he killed her out of greed, hoping he’d have the chance to take over. My mother did well to hide the documents for some time from him, but she wasn’t successful because he later discovered them and that was when all hell broke loose.” The explanation left a bitter aftertaste in my mouth and recalling the past filled me with nothing but undiluted fury.

She sniffed and dried her eyes, her expression switching from hurtful to determined.

“I told you earlier that I’d do anything to get Leonardo out and it was mainly because I saw him as a bad leader, but now I want him out because he killed my friend.”

“Thank you, ma-” My words were cut short as my phone rang out in my bag.

My fingers grazed the metallic device and I smiled when I saw who the caller was. “Hello, dad.” I greeted.

“Hi, Mel. Where are you now?” He probed.

“I’m in a meeting.” His question came as a surprise because he rarely asked for my location. “Why are you asking?”

“Well, I’m in front of a black door with the room number on the lintel and the door is locked.” Realization set in after he described the front of my condo and I sprang to my feet.

“Are you trying to say that you are in California?”

“Exactly!” He affirmed proudly. “Because I’m here to see my daughter.”
