Marrying my high school bully

Her father’s reaction

My father strode across the living room to welcome me. Every time I visited him, he acted like he hadn’t seen me in ages, hugging and planting kisses all over my face.

Though we were separated from each other, I liked that years of separation didn’t affect our bond. I loved him so much and I couldn’t wish to have another man as my father.

“I missed you so much, Honey.” He pressed me hard to his chest and planted a kiss on my forehead. “You forgot about your old man, huh? I’m not happy.” He whined, pouting his lips.

His cute method of guilt-tripping me cracked me up. “I’m so sorry, daddy. I’ve been so swamped with work and today I made a decision that I would visit you, and here I am.”

I was still contemplating when to tell him about my pregnancy. I didn’t even know if I should tell him that Dexter was the father, but then I figured that he would put two and two together.

“I can’t wait for you to expose those bastards so that we can have a father-daughter vacation. We’ve not had that in a while, you know. I can still remember how fun our last trip was.” He reminded me and I nodded.

After all the hassle, I’d need to take a break. I wanted Leonardo and Emilia to be in jail before I even started showing or things might get more complicated.

“It will all be over soon, Dad. Just be patient with me.” I said and plopped down on the chair as a sudden wave of exhaustion hit me.

I didn’t bother going home to take a nap as I knew that I might oversleep and forget about meeting my father.

“Dinner is ready, but you look tired and that brings me to the question I’ve been wanting to ask. Why were you absent from the meeting yesterday?”

Maybe I should have gone ahead to tell him the real reason, but I didn’t want to present the news just like that. Before coming, I’d peed on a stick and cross-checked the result, then placed it inside a gift box.

I anticipated his reaction so I wanted to make it all worth it.

I gave him the same response that I gave to the others and I was glad he didn’t ask anymore questions.

We were ushered to the dining area where a feast had been prepared for us. I took a peek at the glass bowls and my mouth watered.

“This looks delicious,” I commented and served myself a portion of mashed potatoes, a little bit of vegetables and some grilled chicken.

There was a bowl of spinach soup by the side which was apparently for my father, but strangely, I began to crave it so I scooped some into my plate, ignoring the surprised glance my father threw at me.

“I know you might not have had much to eat at work, but you are eating so much more than you used to. Is anything the matter?” His eyes gleamed with surprise and so much worry that I couldn’t help but tell him the truth.

My lips curled into a shy smile as I dug into my bag and produced the gift box. “You’ll get the answer in the box, Daddy.” I passed it to him and he received it with slight hesitation.

I bit into the well-grilled chicken while waiting for him to unwrap the box.

The wrapper came off quickly as he was overcome with curiosity, then he opened the box and a loud gasp escaped his lips. I dropped the chicken and my cheeks heated up immediately.

The look on his face was priceless as he kept gazing at the stick. “Is this real, Melissa? Are you pregnant?” He asked, his voice shaky as if he expected me to debunk the news.

I got up and went to him. “The news is as real as it gets, Dad. I’m so pregnant.” I giggled and wrapped my arms around him.

He held me, his sniffs resonating in my ear and that was when I realised that he had broken down in tears. I joined him, crying happily as I kept singing to myself that I had a child.

I made a vow there and then to protect him or her with my last breath.

“I’m so happy, Melissa. Your mother would have felt the same way too.”

“Yes, she would have been very happy.” I blinked hard to suppress the tears that threatened to roll down my cheeks. “Thank you, Dad, for always being here for me. You gave me reasons to live again and now I have more. I don’t know what I’d have done if you didn’t come into my life.” I confessed as he straightened my hair with his fingers.

“You don’t have to thank me, sweetheart. I still bless the day I met you at the cafe, and I’m so glad that I offered to take you to eat somewhere else. Honestly, a few days before I met you, I was making plans on adopting a child, since I couldn’t bring myself to fall in love with another woman and have a child with her when I haven’t found you. After our meeting, I decided to drop the idea of adoption and try to get closer to you because you reminded me so much of your mother.”

I smiled, “And look at where that meeting has brought us.”

I returned to my seat and prepared myself for the next question, but it didn’t come, instead, he decided to dive into a teasing session.

“Now I understand why you chose such a weird combination. And I’m guessing it’s also the reason for your glow, or haven’t you noticed that you’ve become extraordinarily beautiful?” He smirked, wriggling his brows.

“You really have to stop now, Dad. It’s not my fault that the baby wants to eat that.” I said in my defense, then faced the mashed potatoes.

My heart thumped fast when he finally dropped the question. “Does Dexter know about it?”

My eyes popped and my spoon slipped off my fingers, making a clattering sound. “How do you know that he is the father?” I asked, getting nervous.

“I’ve got eyes, Melissa and I know that even though he messed up, he’s still the only man you’d want to have anything with. So how did he take the news?”

“He was surprised at first, but I guess he is more excited than I am,” I said tersely, deciding that I wouldn’t add the remaining details.

He sighed and entwined his fingers, wearing a brooding expression. “I still don’t understand how fast it was for him to forget about the woman he married. What if you were another person?”

I lowered my lashes, knowing that his temper was rising. I wasn’t sure my father would ever approve of Dexter once this issue was over.

“Let’s not talk about this now, Dad. We should be happy about the news I just shared and make plans on the names my child would bear.” I said to lighten the slightly tense atmosphere.

His smile returned and I felt better.

My phone rang and seeing that it was the inspector, I excused myself and headed to the living room. “Hi, Inspector James. Is there any update?”

He cleared his throat and then waited for some seconds before responding. “There is. We found a used empty syringe lying on the floor close to Liam’s cell. And I guess it was used by the woman we saw in the security camera to stab Liam.” He announced and I chuckled, knowing who was responsible.

“Thank you for informing me, I’ll begin my investigation now.”

I was about to hang up when he added. “Dexter was here to see Liam today, but I had to tell him that he had passed on. Just thought of telling you.” He said and the line went dead, leaving me to wonder why he went to visit Liam.
