Chapter 135 The Worthlessness Of Belated Affection
Nancy never expected him to act in such a way – displaying gentleness that was hidden beneath his cold and gruff demeanor. When did he learn to say such things?
She couldn’t even reject him.
In this small town, the night sky was particularly mesmerizing.
Even the moon appeared as if it had been scooped up from the water, soft and clear.
Moonlight scattered across both of them.
Nancy and Nicholas walked side by side as they made their way back to the old house. They were both quiet, as if it had been agreed upon beforehand.
Suddenly, Nancy exclaimed, “Ahhh!”
Nicholas quickly grabbed her hand to steady her.
There were small potholes along the downward slope, and Nancy, who hadn’t been paying attention, nearly fell because of one.
Once she regained her balance, she gently pulled away from Nicholas while politely saying, “Thank you!”
The normal thing for Nicholas to do now was to tell her she didn’t need to thank him.
Yet, as he stared at her moonlit face, he felt another surge of bitterness. He couldn’t bring himself to say those words.
She had spent the entire day smiling freely, movingly, beautifully.
For a moment, Nicholas felt like things had returned to the way they were when they first met. She used to smile radiantly back then. She always had a carefree and adorable smile on her face.
He even thought she had decided to let go of the past and start anew.
However, in this very moment, he was brought back to reality.
That was not the case at all.
Her smiles weren’t a result of a willingness to forgive and forget. They were simply a facade.
Now, the sun had set and darkness reigned. Her smiles were gone, and she returned to her reserved and indifferent self. She was distancing herself from him once again.
That was why she withdrew her hand.
That was why she thanked him politely.
Her politeness felt like a blow to his heart. He felt suffocated.
If he could, he desperately wished she could go back to being the cheerful and lively young woman who was always by his side.
Unfortunately, he would no longer experience that.
When they arrived at the gate, Nancy looked up. The old house was bathed in moonlight. The two lights in front of the entrance seemed especially warm and inviting.
After stepping through the gate, they were greeted by a floral scent.
Nicholas ended his call and followed behind Nancy.
Suddenly, there was a bang, and fireworks bloomed above the old house.
More and more fireworks exploded in the sky….
Soon, the entire sky transformed into an ocean of fireworks. The fireworks fizzed through the air like shooting stars. The colorful patterns bloomed over and over again. It was truly a spectacular sight.
The fireworks also illuminated the old house.
Nicholas saw the joy and surprise in Nancy’s eyes.
Her head was tilted toward the sky, and she was smiling brightly. She seemed exceptionally happy.
It’s worth it.
At that moment, Nicholas’ world stood still as those words echoed loudly in his head.
Nothing else seemed important anymore.
The fireworks continued.
The entire sky was illuminated, and Nancy’s smile never faded.
When everything returned to silence after the final burst of fireworks, Nicholas approached and asked, “Did you like it?”
“Yeah. It was beautiful.” Nancy nodded. “I didn’t expect such a surprise.”
She was smiling. Her excitement and joy were evident.
Nicholas stared at her without saying anything.
After enjoying the fireworks, they went inside the house.
“We’ll stay here tonight,” Nicholas said.
The neat and cozy bedroom filled Nancy’s heart with warmth. There was an indescribable sense of
hominess.
“Alright.” She nodded.
Her casual response made Nicholas feel like she didn’t fully understand what he meant.
He cleared his throat and explained, “I mean that we’ll both be using this bedroom.”
Nancy pointed at the only bed in the room and repeated in disbelief, “Do you mean we’re both using this room and this bed together?”
“Yeah.” Nicholas nodded. “There are only two rooms in this house. The other room is used for storage and doesn’t have a bed.”
In other words, this was the only place he could sleep.
Nancy was speechless. Original content from NôvelDrama.Org.
Since the house belonged to his family, she had no right to kick him out.
In the end, she compromised. “Since it’s inconvenient, you can just stay here. You take the bed. There’s more bedding in the house, right? I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“Yes.” Nicholas quickly nodded..
He knew this was the most Nancy was willing to accept. He had to be satisfied with this. He couldn’t ask for more.
“I’m going to take a shower. It’s been a tiring day. I want to sleep early,” Nancy said.
“Alright.”
When she came out of the shower, Nicholas was bent over, setting out the bedding on the floor. When he looked up and saw Nancy, he froze for a moment before averting his eyes.
Even though he looked away as quickly as possible, he could still remember how her clear skin. glistened after the shower. She looked even more beautiful.
The shower had left Nancy’s skin feeling soft and supple. She didn’t look her age. Instead, she seemed like a young woman who had just blossomed into adulthood.
Resisting the urge within him, Nicholas said, “You can take the bed. I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“It’s fine. I’m not that delicate. I can sleep just fine on the floor.”
Nancy stepped towards the bedding on the floor.
Nicholas turned around and pulled her into his arms before heading towards the bed.
The faint scent that emanated from her overwhelmed his senses. The barely noticeable fragrances tickled his soul and made his blood rush.
His body heated up. Even his arms grew warmer.
Nicholas looked away. He dared not look at Nancy. He was afraid he wouldn’t be able to control himself.
Just as he was setting Nancy down on the bed, he slipped and lost his balance. His body began to fall towards Nancy.
“Careful!” Nancy exclaimed.
Nicholas immediately grabbed the side of the bed to stop himself from falling.
He was on the verge of stepping back when he became aware that his face was directly above Nancy’s. Their noses were touching, leaving no space between them. They could even hear the sound of each other’s breath.
What’s more, their lips were mere inches apart, almost touching. All he had to do was lean in slightly to press his lips against hers.
