Chapter 417 The Operation Is Successful
Chapter 417 The Operation Is Successful
Lea took two sheets of tissue paper and blew her nose. "I know how much Rachel wanted to be with her parents, so I know how heartbroken she would be when she found out Jack's parents had something to do with her parents' death. However, she was willing to come back with Jack. She may appear stubborn and hard, but she must have forgiven him in her heart and is probably no longer angry. She has always been a soft-hearted person. God, why did such a thing have to happen all of a sudden? Hasn't she suffered enough?"
Her voice was neither loud nor piercing, but Rachel heard it through the door regardless.
She pulled the quilt over her head and wept silently until sleep claimed her. When she woke up, she looked out the window and found that it was already dark outside.
Julie was also asleep on the sofa by the bed. When she heard sounds of Rachel stirring, she immediately sat up and asked, "Miss, are you awake? Are you feeling better?"
"Much better," she replied in a faint voice. She picked up her phone from the bedside table and looked at it. She had been sleeping for more than five hours. She got out of bed in a hurry and walked outside. Julie called out to her worriedly. "Miss, where are you going?"
"I'll go to the hospital to see Jack. The surgery's probably done by now."
"Mr. Jonathan Fu called just now and said that Mr. Jack Fu's operation was successful."
As soon as she heard the news, Rachel suddenly felt her legs give out from under her. She grabbed at the door frame for support, closed her eyes, and smiled in thanks. She thought, 'Thank goodness, he's all right!'
Julie slipped on her shoes again and rushed forward to assist her. "Mr. Jonathan Fu asked you to go to the hospital tomorrow morning."
She purposefully withheld the fact that Jack remained in a coma according to Jonathan.
In the hospital, Jack lay in the bed, an oxygen mask obstructing half of his face from view. The constant beep from the vital signs monitor beside him was the only sound that interrupted the silence in the room. Finally, Tracy sat beside him and grabbed his hand tightly. "Jack, please wake up quickly."
The operation went on for ten full hours, and afterward, the doctor emerged from the
operating room looking exhausted. When he nodded toward them, Tracy all but collapsed against her husband, feeling boneless with relief. She kept murmuring, "Thank God, thank God!" But then, the doctor told them, "The surgery was successfully, but he's not out of the woods yet. He has yet to regain consciousness, so we need to transfer him to the ICU for strict monitoring."
Jonathan's heart jumped to his throat again. He kept pacing back and forth in the ward, feeling ten years older than he was. He frowned and said, "Okay, don't cry. You are making things worse!"
"I'm so worried about him," Tracy replied in a choked-up voice. She covered her face with both hands, tears streaming between her fingers. "My son is lying in a hospital bed like this. If it weren't for Rachel's pregnancy, I would never have let her come near him!"
"What the hell are you talking about?"
After reigning in his anger for a whole day, a dam finally broke inside Jonathan. He dropped his walking stick on the floor and whirled around to face Tracy, his face a picture of fierce anger. He roared, "It was a car accident. Did Rachel ask the bus to hit Jack's car? For once, woman, can't you use your brain to think?"
"I know that the accident wasn't caused by her," Tracy yelled hysterically. "But if she hadn't had an argument with our son, do you think Jack would have come here alone on a business trip?" Her
eyes were red and swollen from crying too much.
The nurse outside the door heard them quarreling in the room and barged in. Her face devoid of expression, she admonished in a low voice, "Be quiet! If you want to quarrel, just go home. The patient needs to rest."
Jonathan blushed, while Tracy again buried her face in her hands and cried silently.
At the sight of this heartbreaking tableau, the anger drained out of the nurse. She sighed slightly and said in a gentler tone, "We understand what you're going through, but please remember that you are in the ward right now. It's late, so you can go home. We will take care of him here. Besides, you have arranged for a caregiver, haven't you? Just let her stay here."
Hearing this, Jonathan and Tracy knew that they couldn't stay any longer. They left a few instructions with the nurse and left the hospital together.
When they left, the ward was quiet again. The nurse recorded the data on the monitor and walked out of the ward. NôvelDrama.Org © 2024.
Not long after, a burst of rapid footsteps came from the other end of the corridor. Scarlett came rushing toward the nurse station. The nurse had just sat down but had to stand again to speak with the newcomer. "Miss, who are you looking for?"
"Which ward is Jack Fu in?"
Gasping for breath, Scarlett saw the nurse point at the ward behind her and headed straight toward it without thanking her. The nurse mumbled under her breath, "What an rude person!"
Of course, Scarlett didn't hear it. She looked at Jack who was lying in the bed and frowned. The caregiver heard the noise and opened her eyes. She saw the figure standing at the door and asked, "Are you here to visit Mr. Fu?"
"Have his parents gone home?" she asked. At the caregiver's nod, her frown deepened. After a moment of hesitation, she walked toward the bed and said in a strained voice, "I'll stay here with him, then."
She was shopping with her friends when she got the call from Tracy. At that time, she thought that the situation provided the perfect
opportunity for her to become closer to Jack, so she immediately ditched her companions and drove over.
However, watching him lying in the hospital bed motionlessly, she wondered how they could possibly cultivate a relationship. Besides, since both Jonathan and Tracy had left, there was nobody around to witness her intentions.
Even so, since she was here anyway, she couldn't leave at once. With her chin on her hands, Scarlett felt a twinge of remorse and thought, 'If I had known the circumstances earlier, I wouldn't have rushed over.'
That night, Rachel didn't sleep well. The past that she thought she had already left behind had suddenly caught up with her and came to her dream.
At that time, she couldn't even remember why she quarreled with Jack in the first place and why she locked him outside. She thought that he would sleep in the guest room that night, but in the following morning, she opened the door and Jack fell directly at her feet.
Jack sat against the door for the whole night, a pillow cradled in his arms.
When he saw her step out, he asked her tentatively, "Honey, are you still angry?"
Rachel didn't answer him. With a poker face, she stepped around him to the living room, and he followed her. He said gently, "I've prepared breakfast. If you don't like it, I'll buy some for you."
A sudden voice broke through her dreams. Rachel opened her eyes and saw Julie standing by the window. She gently patted her shoulder and said, "Miss, are you okay? I saw you crying, so I woke you up."
Rachel raised her hand to her face and touched the corner of an eye. Sure enough, her fingers came away wet with tears.
She recalled the scene in her dream. At that time, she didn't feel anything, but now, her eyes were burning with tears.
She still remembered that two days after their argument, she accidentally learned that their quarrel was only a matter of misunderstanding and contradictions. At that time, she wanted to apologize to Jack after work, but he beat her to it. He held her hand and said, "Rachel, I'm sorry for making you angry. Will you forgive me?"
The memory stopped there. Rachel sat up and looked out of the window. It was dawn —still early— but she got out of bed and took out her phone. It was only five ten in the morning.
Julie asked, "Miss, it's still early. Don't you want to sleep for a while?"
"No, I'm not sleepy anymore."
She had booked a hotel suite with a small kitchen. Last night, she asked Julie to go to the supermarket to buy some bones because she was planning on making soup to take to the hospital.
Rachel cleaned up and went to the kitchen. Due to her pregnancy, she couldn't bear the smell of oil and smoke. When the smell of boiling pork wafted her way, she immediately felt sick.
Seeing her frown, Julie hurried forward and said, "Miss, let me prepare it. You can sit down and rest."
She tried her best to tamp down her disgust and shook her head. "I'm okay. I can do it."
Bone soup took a long time to cook. Once the soup turned milky white after simmering over low heat, then it was nearly ready. Rachel transferred the soup into a thermal bottle and glanced at Julie, who fell asleep on the sofa. She left quietly and didn't wake her up.
After asking several nurses, she finally found out Jack's ward number. When she walked through the door, Rachel didn't know how to react to the scene that greeted her.
Jack was lying in the bed with his eyes closed, while Scarlett was sleeping on the edge of the bed. Their hands were tightly intertwined.
What a loving scene!
With a bitter smile, Rachel looked down at the soup she brought with her. She stood there for a moment, stewing in the mixed feelings the sight awakened within her, and left after a final glance.
After her footsteps had faded away, Scarlett slowly opened her eyes, and her lips curved up in a smug smile.
By coincidence, she had stepped toward the window to make a phone call to a friend when she saw Rachel entering the hospital. She guessed that the other woman must have come to see Jack, so she quickly positioned herself on the edge of the bed and grabbed Jack's hand tightly.
She turned back and looked at Jack's pale and bloodless face. An idea started forming in her mind. Lea couldn't fall asleep until the latter half of the night, so it was almost noon when she woke up. She put on a coat and went to Rachel's suite next door. Unexpectedly, she found Julie as the room's sole occupant, sitting on the sofa in the living room and snoring.
She urgently shook Julie awake and asked, "Julie, why are you sleeping here? Where is Rachel?"
"She's making soup in the kitchen," Julie groggily answered.
