Chapter 1613
Elsie and Jed waited until Mona had gotten into her car and driven off before turning their attention to the vehicle parked at the intersection. Their cautious behavior made it clear they were trying to avoid being seen by Mona.noveldrama
"Hey, isn't that your sister-in-law? Are they following her?" Natalie asked, her sharp eyes immediately catching the situation.
Skylar's expression turned serious. "It looks like it. Let me make a call."
The phone rang for only a few seconds before it was answered. "Hey, Steven, I just saw Mona at the baby store."
Steven replied, "Yeah, she mentioned this morning she'd be out picking up things for the hospital bag."
"I saw Ruth and some guy acting suspiciously, following her. You need to make sure Mona stays home for now. If she needs anything, have the housekeeper get it. Ruth has no boundaries, and she might do something reckless. Mona's pregnant-she can't afford to take any risks," Skylar warned, her tone firm.
There was a brief silence before Steven's voice turned grim. "Understood. I'll handle it. You should be careful, too."
After hanging up, Skylar still looked uneasy.
Natalie frowned. "Are you okay? You're worried Ruth might try something?"
Her gaze shifted to Ruth and Jed, who were now kissing passionately right there on the street.
"Desperate people do desperate things," Skylar muttered. "She's asked us for money a few times, and we refused. Recently, she even tried to get Charles to join a variety show with her, but he turned it down, and the whole thing was canceled.
"Without the money, she's bound to act out. She's spent her whole life being pampered, thinking only of herself, and pulling strings to get her way," Skylar said, her frustration evident in her furrowed brows.
Outside, Ruth and Jed were still lost in their embrace, oblivious to the fact that they were being watched.
Natalie nodded in agreement. "People like that often make reckless choices. You're right. We should make sure your sister-in-law stays alert."
"Steven loves Mona. He'll do what's necessary to protect her," Skylar replied with a reassuring nod.
Still, Skylar couldn't shake her unease. Ten minutes later, they each returned to their homes.
On the way home, Skylar contacted Aiken, hoping to hire a few discreet bodyguards to protect Mona without alarming her or Steven.
Aiken had reliable contacts who could ensure someone's safety without drawing attention.
Just as she ended the call with Aiken, her phone buzzed again-Joe was calling.
There was some traffic ahead, so Skylar quickly pulled over to the side of the road before she answered the call.
"Traffic's bad on my end. I might be a bit late getting home. Have you made it back yet?" she asked.
Skylar had spent the day with
Natalie, while Joe had gone to play basketball with Jeremy and Rowan. He'd texted her about half an hour ago, saying the game had ended and he was heading home.
"Not yet-traffic's rough here too," Joe replied.
Skylar laughed. "Looks like it's a race to see who gets home first."
It was likely that they were close to the city center, a place notorious for its heavy traffic. The nearby roads were almost constantly jammed.

"Is there a punishment for the loser?" Joe's voice suddenly lowered, his tone carrying a playful, intimate undertone that only the two of them would understand.
Skylar's eyes sparkled, and her ears flushed slightly. "Alright, I accept your challenge."
She then heard Joe speaking to Lucas. "Take a route with less traffic."
He then added to Skylar, "Get ready when you get home tonight."
