Chapter 0472
Chapter 0472
Alex's hand shook slightly, barely noticeable. His face was pale, clearly indicating his poor health. He offered, "If you need anything, just tell me. I'll fetch it for you before leaving."
Candice glanced at him briefly, then shifted her gaze toward the hospital room's door, choosing to remain silent.
Alex's eyes lingered on her slender figure and curly lashes, a heaviness settling in his heart.
Placing the book within Candice's reach, he gave her one last look before turning to leave.
As he reached the door, he heard a faint sound behind him. Turning back, he saw Candice picking up the book he had left.
His eyes flickered, but before he could react, she stored the book away in the cabinet.
Alex's dark eyes calmed as he closed the door behind him and returned to his own hospital room.
The pain from his stomach bleeding was unbearable, but in that moment, it seemed insignificant compared to the overwhelming feelings of oppression and loss.
"Where have you been?" Helen demanded as he entered his room.
Alex looked up and asked, "Why are you here?"
"Why am I here?!" Helen's voice rose sharply.
She glared at Alex coldly, taking a moment to compose herself before continuing, "I have something to ask you. I heard you visited my family. Why now? Don't you know they're waiting for you to make the first move?"
Her sharp gaze bore into Alex. She sneered suddenly, "Is it because of Candice? Are you blinded by her current condition?"
Alex interrupted her, lifting his head. His gaze, as deep as the ocean at midnight, held endless darkness. He asked, "Have you said enough?"
Helen's emotions flared up again.
Before she could respond, Alex dismissed her, saying, "If you're done, please leave."
She arrived in rage and left in fury.
"What's happening? I just saw your mother storm out, looking furious."
A casual voice came from the doorway as Sieg leaned against it. He said, "I heard you got stomach bleeding from drinking with those old men from the Sui family. I thought I'd come to see how you're holding up."
Alex simply asked, "What do you want?"
Upon hearing the question, Sieg was momentarily taken aback and asked, "What happened to your voice?"
Alex's voice sounded rough, indicating damage to his vocal cords. Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org exclusive © material.
Ignoring Sieg's concern, Alex watched as Sieg settled down, his expression thoughtful.
After a pause, Sieg chuckled, "No wonder you had me check out the problem with the hospital and reacted so strongly when I mentioned it. So, that baby really was yours."
Leaning back, Sieg asked, "What's your plan now? Candice has already had a miscarriage. Do you see this as a good thing or a bad thing?"
Sieg's question held a morbid curiosity. Since Candice's incident, all their friends had noticed changes in Alex, especially Sieg.
With his wide network of contacts, Sieg had a better idea of Alex's potential plans.
Despite this, he was puzzled as he probed, "Seeing you in pain like this really confuses me. You didn't treat Candice like this before. Is my memory playing tricks on me?"
The room was filled with silence.
Sieg looked at his buddy, who had always been seen as exemplary in their circle—capable, dignified, and untouchable, almost like an immortal, distant figure.
He had always thought that Alex's relationship with Candice wasn't serious.
That night, rain fell. The hospital room window was left open, allowing in a cold breeze.
Candice struggled to sleep, as usual. She never experienced a restful night during her time in the hospital because strange dreams frequently abruptly woke her up.
Leaning against the headboard, her forehead damp with cold sweat, she reached out to switch on the bedside lamp, illuminating the room.
Candice had the urge to read a book but decided against it when she remembered she had stashed it away in the cabinet.
She narrowed her eyes and glanced at her phone, noticing it was just past midnight.
The hospital was eerily quiet at night, amplifying the sound of footsteps outside her door. Assuming it was a passing nurse, she paid it little mind.
However, after half an hour, the footsteps still lingered outside her door.
Meanwhile, Alex leaned against the wall, tilting his head back to rest against it.
In the dimly lit corridor, he stood where the light didn't reach, lost in his thoughts.
Suddenly, there was a soft sound of footsteps. His fingers twitched instinctively, and he glanced toward the door, which remained closed.
"Sir," a gentle voice broke the silence, the night-shift nurse speaking softly, "you're still up. Are you not feeling well?"
Alex looked at her.
The nurse continued, "If you're not feeling well, I can take you to see the doctor. It's best to rest in your room. Standing here might disturb other patients."
Alex swallowed and glanced at the door of Candice's room. It was now dark inside. Before leaving, he lowered his gaze and mumbled, "Sorry."
He wore a black trench coat, and even though the corridor lights weren't bright, they cast a faint glow, elongating his shadow across the patches of light and darkness.
As he walked away, the nurse felt a deep sense of loneliness.
Meanwhile, in the room, Candice lay in bed. Her night blindness prevented her from seeing anything in the dimly lit environment.
The silence around her was so profound that she found herself breathing softly, almost unconsciously.
The police paid her two more visits, during which Candice fully cooperated, providing all the evidence she had.
During their last visit, Helen accompanied them.
Though the bandages on Candice's hands and head had been removed, the scars left behind still looked menacing.
Helen, usually poised and confident, was momentarily taken aback when she saw the injuries on Candice's face.
However, her hesitation was brief, and her gaze soon shifted meaningfully to Candice's abdomen.
"Let's get straight to the point," she said. "I'm here to discuss settling this matter privately. Tell me your price."
Candice was set to be discharged in a couple of days.
When Yana heard Helen's proposal, she erupted, but Candice stopped her before she could respond.
Candice looked calmly at Helen and said, "I refuse a private settlement."
Helen narrowed her eyes and asked, "Then what do you want?"
With a pale face and desolate eyes, Candice looked directly at Helen and spoke deliberately, "I want those responsible for hurting my child to face the consequences they deserve."
Her words were clear and forceful, reaching Alex just as he was about to enter the room.
Candice spoke softly, "And I will never forgive any of you."
