Chapter 46
Chapter 46
As she read the name of the party on the document, her fingertips turned cold.
Humphrey Moore, the CEO of Red Sun Corporation.
Candice had narrowly escaped an uncomfortable encounter with Humphrey last time and even ended up with
a photograph taken.
Kayla mentioned that Sonia kicked up a fuss and wanted to go with Alex, but he didn’t agree.
Candice had an indifferent look when she heard that.
Of course, Alex wouldn’t agree.
Most people in the Dorrington social circle knew Humphrey’s reputation. Since Alex cared so much about Sonia, he naturally wouldn’t want her to have any contact with someone like Humphrey.
Candice tried to ignore the gossip from her colleagues. Her phone on the side chimed with a message alert.
She lowered her head to see a WhatsApp message from Yvonne, containing a picture of Peach receiving an
infusion.
After a moment of silence, Candice replied, (Is she okay?]
The response came quickly, saying that Peach’s condition suddenly worsened, and the expenses for this
month might be a bit higher.
Candice looked at her phone silently and transferred the ten thousand dollars that Alex had given her.
When Alex arrived, he went straight to Candice.
“Come with me.”
Just thinking about Humphrey’s oily gaze made Candice unconsciously furrow her brows. Alex noticed her
hesitation and spoke with a slightly stern tone. “Don’t want to go?”
Candice stood up without much expression. “No. I’m fine.”
When they arrived at the venue, Humphrey hadn’t arrived yet. Candice held her bag and said to Alex, “I’ll go to
the restroom.”
Alex asked, “Nervous?”
It was obvious he was referring to the incident with the photo of Candice and Humphrey. Candice looked at him, her eyelashes fluttering. This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org: ©.
“Alex, this joke isn’t funny.”
“Do I look like I’m joking with you?”
Alex’s expression remained calm. He didn’t smoke, so his fingers were long and beautiful, and his skin was fair.
His right hand casually rested on the wrist of his left hand, looking careless and lazy.
Candice didn’t understand Alex’s intentions. She wanted to ask him but didn’t have a chance as Humphrey arrived.
After exchanging greetings with Alex, Humphrey turned to Candice. He shook her hand with a smirk that made her feel uncomfortable.
Candice forced herself to shake hands with Humphrey. But maybe because Alex was present this time, Humphrey didn’t behave as brazenly as the last time.
Instead, he talked seriously about the cooperation.
However, towards the end, Humphrey shifted the topic back to Candice. “Ms. Renault, you’re young and beautiful. Do you have a boyfriend?”
Candice looked up at Alex, who seemed indifferent.
She replied softly, “No.”
“How about I introduce someone to you?” Humphrey grinned and then pointed at himself, asking, “What do you think of me, Ms. Renault?”
Candice’s smile was quite forced.
“Mr. Reeves, please don’t joke around.”
However, Humphrey insisted on discussing this with Candice for quite a while. He got a bit intrusive after drinking too much.
Candice couldn’t refuse and could only accompany him in drinking.
After Humphrey’s secretary assisted him and left, Candice felt dizzy and uncomfortable. She tried to stand up. but her legs felt weak, and she nearly fell straight down.
Luckily, someone caught her by the elbow, preventing her from falling.
Candice lifted her hazy eyes and saw Alex’s expressionless face.
She was stunned for a moment, then reached out to hug him.
Alex frowned and moved back. “Candice.”
Candice’s mind was in a blur. She grabbed Alex’s clothes and looked unsure if she wanted to sit down.
Then, she looked up at him and asked, “Don’t you like me anymore?”
Her eyes, tinted with the effects of alcohol, displayed a hint of confusion. The hand grabbing Alex’s clothes was surprisingly strong.
Alex was taken aback by her question.
After a moment, he nodded and calmly replied. “No, I don’t like you anymore.”
Candice released her grip, letting Alex pull her up.
However, when Alex was about to send her home, she grabbed onto him again. She asked in a soft voice,” Why?”
Alex couldn’t hear clearly. He put Candice on the sofa and was about to leave when she grabbed the edge of
his shirt.
Next, she pressed her soft body against him and rested her head on his back, murmuring. “Alex…”
When Candice woke up the next day, she found herself sleeping on the sofa without a blanket, and the window was wide open.
She had a splitting headache. When she checked the time, it was already nine in the morning.
Realizing she couldn’t go to work in this condition, Candice called Kayla and told her she was taking the day
off.
After taking a shower, Candice still felt dizzy and weak. A thermometer confirmed she had a low fever.
Candice had intended to take some fever-reducing medicine but found none at home, so she had to go out to buy some.
As she stepped out, she coincidentally encountered Alex leaving as well.
Candice looked at Alex with a pale face. She wanted to speak, but her throat hurt too much.
Alex wasn’t dressed as formally today, so he probably wasn’t going to the office.
Alex glanced at Candice’s pale face, then quickly looked away. He seemed to be in a hurry to leave.
Candice felt weak and lacking strength. She barely made it to the elevator before stumbling back home. She felt uncomfortably cold all over.
After waking up from a nap, it was already afternoon.
Candice touched her forehead to find that she was still feverish. Sitting on the sofa, she licked her lips and
was about to check the time on her phone when she noticed numerous messages in the company group chat.
Opening it, she found a colleague sharing photos.
The main characters in the photos were Alex and Sonia. Judging by the background, they were at Dorrington
University. Today seemed to be Sonia’s day to participate in some event at her alma mater.
Candice stared at the photos for a long time, feeling a sudden chill
L
No wonder Alex was different today.
Turns out, he was accompanying Sonia back to school.
Candice remembered the year she graduated. She had begged Alex for a long time to accompany her to the graduation ceremony.
However, he only replied with one word: Busy.
So, was he truly busy, or did he just not want to be with her?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of her phone.
It was Jackson.
She answered the call, and Jackson’s gentle and bright voice immediately sounded in her ear. “Candice, where are you?”
Candice remembered she stood up Jackson’s Invitation last night. With a hand covering her forehead, she apologized. “I’m sorry about last night. Something came up suddenly.”
Jackson paused, sensing something off in Candice’s tone. He asked in a low voice, “What happened? Are you not feeling well?”
When Jackson arrived, he brought medicine and packed food. Seeing Candice’s complexion, he quickly covered her with a blanket.
“What happened to you?” Jackson looked worried. “Why didn’t you call me if you feel unwell?”
Candice was pale and covered in the blanket. She looked extremely weak and fragile.
She forced a smile and softly asked Jackson, “Is the person in charge of the exhibition still willing to meet me? I want to talk to them.”
After two days of illness, Candice finally recovered.
On the third day, she went to meet the person in charge of the exhibition. The salary and conditions offered were lower than what Candice expected, so she didn’t immediately agree.
Jackson comforted her, “I have a friend in this field; I can introduce you to them.”
