Chapter 208

Chapter 208

Candice had just reached the operating waiting room when her phone rang.

It was a call from Jackson. His voice was urgent when she answered. “Candy, I’m currently away

on business and just heard about Joe’s operation. How’s everything?”

Candice hadn’t been in contact with Jackson due to her busy schedule. She reassured him.”

Everything is under control.”

He added comfortingly, “Don’t worry too much. All’s well that ends well. He’ll pull through.”

Candice thanked Jackson but soon lapsed into silence.

After a moment of reflection, Jackson said, “I’m sorry, Candy. I’m never around when you’re in

trouble.”

“This is something I need to take care of on my own,” Candice said.

“I feel like a bad friend,” Jackson acknowledged bitterly, mentioning his hectic schedule with

family business.

Unsure how to respond, Candice simply told him, “You shouldn’t worry.”

“Just before leaving. I asked Hanley to keep an eye on you. Reach out to him if you need anything.

“Jackson advised before ending the call due to his busy schedule.

As the call disconnected, Candice thought she detected a girl’s voice in the background, but she

brushed aside the thought.

Not long after, Candice received a phone call from Yvonne. She declined the call immediately. knowing

Yvonne had merely called to ask for money.

Candice spent her morning anxiously in the waiting area, watching for any signs from the

operating room. Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.

Finally, at one in the afternoon, the door opened, and Dr. Sui stepped out, visibly worn out.

Candice was too drained to stand up. She merely stared at him. Her anxiety was visible to those

around her, evident from the sweat on her brow and her white–knuckled grip on the chair.

She was terrified. Her heart raced with dread, fearful of hearing news she couldn’t handle.

Chad noticed her pale complexion. He removed his mask and addressed her firmly, “You insisted

on this surgery for your grandpa, now why the fear? He’s all right, the surgery went well.”

Candice blinked. She stared at Chad, struggling to understand what he was saying.

Chad left, his patience wearing thin.

After the surgery, Joe was immediately moved to the ICU.

Dr. Brooks met with Candice to go over the details. The surgery was a success, with the blood clot

removed and the bridging successful. The focus was now on recovery, avoiding infection, and healing

properly.

Candice was preoccupied with handling the necessary paperwork. Later, she went to see Dr. Brooks,

hoping to catch Chad.

Chad, on the other hand, was not in the office.

“Mr. Elysian just took Dr. Sui away,” Dr. Brooks informed her. “Didn’t you see them when you

walked in?”

Candice was puzzled, as she thought Alex had already left.

She decided not to ponder over it, however, and called Alex instead.

After a few rings, Alex answered. He sounded relaxed and somewhat cheerful as he answered, ”

What’s up?”

Candice gently bit her lip and whispered, “Is Dr. Sui with you?”

“Yes.”

“Where have you gone? I’d like to speak with him and thank him for what he did for my grandfather.”

She spoke politely and tactfully. “I also have some concerns about post–operative

care.”

Alex paused briefly. “He’s scheduled for a flight to Solaris tonight.”

Candice frowned as she hastily reassured him. “I promise not to take too much of his time.”

After ending the call, Alex faced Chad, his demeanor cool but respectful. “Sorry about this, Uncle.”

Chad was always stern–faced and exhibited little emotion. After evaluating Alex, he remarked, ”

Clearly, your mother doesn’t quite understand you.”

Alex remained stoic. “Nor does she understand you.”

Helen’s relationship with her family was rocky, but she was close to Chad.

Chad then spoke earnestly. “Lex, this is the first time you’ve sought my help.”

Alex remained silent for a moment. “Her grandfather was an exceptional elder who taught me a

great deal of things.”

Chad remained silent and looked at Alex with a meaningful gaze.

Alex was waiting by his Maybach when Candice arrived.

Candice took a moment to gather her thoughts before approaching him, her eyes downcast. She

halted before Alex. “Where is Dr. Sui?”

It was slightly after three in the afternoon, and the parking lot was quiet.

Alex glanced at Candice and commented with a hint of irony, “You look so pale. People might think you

just received surgery.”

Having been at the hospital since midnight without rest and fraught with worry all afternoon, she did

look washed out. She chose not to respond to his sarcastic remark. After all, Alex’s contacts

made her grandfather’s surgery successful.

With a quiet sigh, Candice murmured, “Thank you, Alex.” Her voice was barely audible.

Alex’s expression momentarily hardened, but soon returned to his usual expression.

Chad walked over, hanging up on the call he had been on.

Candice turned to Chad with a grave expression. “Dr. Sui, I didn’t get the chance to thank you properly

before. I appreciate your help and would like to apologize for my previous behavior.”

Chad waved a hand, though his expression remained stern. “There’s no need for that. If there’s

nothing else, I must leave.”

Candice recognized that Chad didn’t care about their past awkward encounters. She asked him

additional questions about the post–operative care plan.

“I’ve informed Dr. Brooks about all of this,” he replied impatiently. “Please ask him directly. I need to get

back to Solaris. Don’t keep me here any longer.”

His tone was curt as usual, but Candice couldn’t help but smile slightly. She had thought Chad was

arrogant, but this man was simply dedicated to his profession.

Moved, Candice wanted to talk further with him, but Dr. Sui was already getting into his car to

leave.

She returned her attention to Alex.

His eyes were deep, yet his expression remained neutral.

Candice lowered her gaze, shielding her emotions from Alex. After a brief pause, she said softly and

swiftly, “I need to go now.”
