Chapter 239

Chapter 239

Bypassing standard procedures in the workplace wasn’t always advisable, but given Sonia’s obvious

intention to hinder Candice, she felt compelled to take this to Alex.

Kayla led her upstairs, noting, “The two individuals we encountered earlier are from the

government.”

Candice understood the meaning as Kayla pointed to the ceiling.

No wonder Alex had requested to see her in his office. But at least it would make things easier to

deal with.

Downstairs, a prolonged discussion was underway. Candice waited in Alex’s office for over an hour,

and he still hadn’t come up.

She had to acknowledge that Alex’s office had great lighting and design.

Seated on the comfortable sofa, drowsiness soon overtook her. She hadn’t slept well because of her

injuries, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to resist her exhaustion.

She lay on the sofa and closed her eyes, assuming it would still be some time before Alex arrived.

In a semi–conscious state, she heard the door open and the sound of steady footsteps. Then, a

snicker followed.

Alex tossed something onto his desk and asked, “Have you mistaken my office for your home?”

Startled awake, she attempted to stand up reflexively but accidentally pulled her shoulder.

wincing in agony.

Alex leaned on his desk. He stared at her emotionlessly and announced, “You have one minute.”

Still groggy and trying to clear her head, Candice was startled when she realized Alex had already

settled behind his desk.

“If you’re here to gain my sympathy, you may as well leave now,” he said warningly.

“I’m here to address the joint project among our companies,” Candice said, her voice strained. “All

parties had agreed on the contract, but there’s been a delay from your end in signing.”

He lifted his gaze and questioned her, “Do you think I have nothing better to do?”

Candice clarified, “Sonia has been delaying the process, preventing the contract from being

signed.”

“That sounds like a problem you need to handle,” he responded with a cold sneer.

Candice breathed deeply. “Initially, Aether Corporation had no reservations during our

discussions. Are you going to go back on your word?”

Alex’s gaze became dangerous as he focused on Candice. “Shifting blame? Is this typical of Burning

Star Studio? Or is it a reflection of your own inability to finalize a contract without resorting to drama?”

His voice was stern as he unbuttoned his shirt collar. “Is this how you’ve always secured your projects?

Leveraging your look and perhaps…?”

He left his sentence hanging, but Candice grasped his meaning. She ignored it..

Her gaze, instead, was drawn to Alex’s hands as he undid his buttons on his sleeves and rolled them

up. Her eyebrows knitted together in thought.

Alex’s pale complexion made the scar on his arm stand out. It was a deep, apparently recent scar,

about a finger’s length, diagonally marking his forearm.

Candice’s mind flashed back to the moment when Ivor had unexpectedly hurled a fruit knife at her.

which Alex had intercepted.

She swallowed and asked softly, “The injury… on your arm?”

Caught off–guard, Alex glanced briefly at his arm wound, then casually turned his eyes to Candice.

asking cynically, “Changing your strategy now since sympathy didn’t work?”

Candice bit her lip, staying quiet for a moment before admitting with remorse. “I’m sorry. It’s my

fault you got hurt.” Text © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.

Alex let out a derisive snort and was about to say something when Candice’s phone rang.

It was a call from the hospital’s nurse. Candice’s heart sank at the sight of the caller ID.

“Ms. Renault, you need to come to the hospital immediately,” the nurse said urgently.

Candice’s face tensed up. She turned and rushed for the office door without saying anything to

Alex.

Alex replied indifferently, “You always seem to be in the middle of an emergency.”

Upon her arrival at the hospital, the gravity of the situation became evident.

A nurse stood outside her grandfather’s room, and inside, several doctors were attending to him.

Yvonne and Ivor sat on a nearby bench.

Her mother was nervously rubbing her hands, head lowered, while Ivor’s face bore a malevolent

expression. Despite his serious injuries, they were not fatal, and Ivor had been released from the

hospital after a few days.

With a stoic look on her face, Candice asked the nurse, “What’s the situation?”

“I’m not sure,” the nurse answered with uncertainty. “I had stepped out to get water. When I

returned, I found them in the room, conversing with the patient.

“By the time I got them out, I noticed that the patient’s oxygen mask had been moved to the side. The

doctors are examining him now. They mentioned he had a severe emotional outburst.”

Candice’s expression hardened upon hearing this.

Ivor had kept an eye on her from the side, now shooting her a venomous glare.

Candice’s expression turned frosty and spoke to Yvonne. “If you still have any shred of humanity.

left, get him out of here!”

Ivor spat on the ground. The doctors had recently informed him of his impotence, and he harbored a

deep resentment toward Candice.

Narrowing his eyes at her, Ivor declared, “A debt needs to be repaid. Those guilty of murder and harm

deserve to pay with their lives. This old fart’s daughter owes me, and you owe me your fucking life!

Even if I am to be judged by God, you still owe me you bitch!” He smirked spitefully. I’m here to check

on my father–in–law. If he’s dying, as his son–in–law, I should display some care. right? Otherwise,

who will scatter his ashes?”

Ivor’s voice was loud enough to be heard inside Joe’s room, the door of which remained ajar due

to the doctors entering and exiting the room.

A sudden flurry of activity erupted from within the room.

Candice stared at Ivor’s repulsive face. She fought to keep her anger in check and demanded.

What do you want?”

Ivor’s features were naturally intimidating, and now were even more menacing, his eyes were dark

and threatening.

Candice maintained her rationale and ensured she stayed at a safe distance.

Ivor merely gazed at her with a dark, mocking smile.

Candice trembled quietly with fear. She attempted to maintain a facade of calm as she reached for her

phone to call the police.

Ivor abruptly sprang forward and snatched the phone from her grasp. Candice’s thinking was swift, but

she couldn’t evade him in time.

She could only watch as Ivor approached. His body reeked with a mix of tobacco, alcohol, and body

odor.

“You think I’m finished, right? Just wait, I’ll have my revenge! As for the old man, he’s still valuable to

me. I will take good care of him in his final days. After all, he’s worth a good eight hundred thousand!“
