Chapter 248
Chapter 248
“One million five hundred thousand?”
Alex’s tone revealed nothing, but the apparent disdain in his eyes was evident. He looked arrogantly at
Ivor for a while, then nodded slowly.
“Sure. I’ll give it to you.”
Candice abruptly looked up, only to see Alex slightly lowering his head. His long eyelashes shield his
eyes, making it impossible to discern his emotions. Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.
Instantly, a burst of joy erupted in Ivor’s eyes.
Ignoring the large security guards pulling him back, he eagerly extended his neck towards Alex.
“Are you serious? You’re giving me one million five hundred thousand?”
When Alex looked up again, his gaze turned icy.
Ivor looked ecstatic, and Alex looked at him with a frown.
“Either get lost, or I’ll call the police.”
Ivor had achieved his goal. The ferocity on his face receded, replaced once again by a sly smile as
he licked his lips.
“Remember to transfer the money,” he said, then turned to Candice beside him. “I guess you’re still
somewhat useful in the end. Serve Mr. Elysian well in the future!”
The last sentence carried malice, leaving Candice with an unpleasant expression. However, she had
no strength to deal with Ivor’s insolence now. She looked at Alex, her mind still grappling with the
matter of one million five hundred thousand.
The entire farce lasted no more than ten minutes.
After Ivor disappeared, the onlookers gradually dispersed.
Kayla looked at Candice with concern. “Candice, are you okay?”
Candice’s face turned pale, appearing somewhat exhausted. She shook her head.
“I’m fine.”
Kayla wanted to say something more, but as she lifted her eyes, she met Alex’s deep eyes. Her
heart trembled, understanding what had transpired.

She whispered to Candice, “Candice, I haven’t clocked in yet. I need to go upstairs.”
Then she left.
However, before leaving, she added in a low voice, “Call me if you need anything.”
The chaotic morning had finally come to a halt, and now Candice felt the exhaustion. Yet, the lingering
frustration had not dissipated.
Just as she was thinking about it, she heard Alex’s indifferent voice. “Don’t you have anything to
explain?”
“I-” Candice opened her mouth but stopped abruptly.
She didn’t know what to say.
Alex sneered. “First, it was your mother, and now it’s your stepfather. Is Aether Corporation your
family’s ATM? Whether it’s a loan shark or anything else, if you don’t have money, you come here
to withdraw from your bank card?”
He let out a low laugh. Although the tone was light, it carried a cold and heavy weight.
“Candice, my patience isn’t limitless.”
Ivor and Yvonne’s two visits to Aether Corporation did have a significant impact. Even though
Candice knew she had no real connection with these two people, they were a family in the eyes of
others.
Candice lowered her head, and her throat tightened.
She took a deep breath and said to Alex. “You shouldn’t have agreed to give him that one million
five hundred thousand.”
“I shouldn’t have?” Alex looked at Candice, emotions flickering complexly in his eyes. “Even if your
want to be harassed by loan sharks, the company shouldn’t be disrupted by.such a person. He’s
like a persistent bug that brings bad luck everywhere he goes.”
He was right.
People like Ivor were insensible, indifferent to reason, and shameless.
Candice remained silent, tasting the indescribable bitterness and confusion in her heart. Only her
straight back held her from collapsing.
After a moment, she said, “I’ll find a way to pay you back.”
“Suit yourself,” Alex responded with indifference.

Candice managed a forced smile. In reality, the muscles on her face had already gone numb. She
didn’t know what expression she wore, and her mind felt empty.
However, she remembered one thing.
She asked Alex slowly. “Ivor said you gave him money before. When was that?”
Most of the employees had returned to the office, and the surroundings were quiet. Only occasional
passing vehicles on the road across the greenery made any noise.
Alex paused for a moment and casually replied, “I forgot.”
Candice nodded numbly. “If you remember, tell me. I’ll pay you back.”
Something flickered in Alex’s eyes, and he looked at Candice. However, Candice had already turned
and started walking away.
She looked thin, and her clothes hung loosely on her. It seemed like a gust of wind could blow her
away.
Alex’s eyes darkened. He stood downstairs for quite a while before finally going upstairs.
After he went up, Candice took a taxi back home.
She didn’t want to see anyone now. She didn’t want to do anything. She just wanted to be alone in
peace. !
But as she reached the doorstep, the sight of the words written in red paint everywhere shattered
the last strand of her resolve.
Red paint covered almost the entire door and the adjacent walls. Apart from the words “pay up” in
the center, there were numerous insults, curses, and terrifying drawings.
Candice slowly crouched at the doorstep, holding her head as if trying to curl herself up. But it
was impossible. Her body was stiff, and even breathing became difficult.
She thought she would cry, but there was nothing when she touched her face. She blinked.
It turns out that she didn’t feel as tormented as she thought she did.
She couldn’t even summon the energy to shed tears.
The old door creaked open, and Ivor entered the run–down motel with a smug face. Yvonne and Peach
were sitting on the bed. Ivor glanced at them and threw the plastic bag in his hand onto the
table.
“Come over and eat.”
Yvonne looked at the bag on the table that was filled with food. She raised her eyes to look at Ivor.
“Why did you buy these?”
“I’m in a good mood!” Ivor said as he dragged a wooden stool over. He sat down and then propped up
his legs. A smile appeared on his face, now seemingly more sinister.
“I got one million five hundred thousand. I knew that the Elysian guy could provide it. These wealthy
people always care about their reputation. All I had to do was cause a little trouble, and he gave it to
me!”
Ivor casually grabbed a piece of meat and stuffed it into his mouth. “That idiot! I could get money from
him before, now, and in the future. He even thought of scaring me with the police. What a
fool. He’s just a brainless idiot!”
When Yvonne heard this, she hesitated. When her relationship with Candice had just gotten
closer, Ivor urged her to ask Candice for money.
She refused then, thinking it would hurt her daughter’s feelings too much.
Later, Ivor went to Dorrington City once. After a while, he returned with one hundred thousand
dollars. Yvonne had asked him what happened, but he didn’t say much and just told her it wasn’t
her business.
For a long time afterward, Ivor received a sum of money every month. The amount was neither too
much nor too little, but it was enough to keep him happy for a while.
Yvonne used to think it was from Candice.
Now, it looked like it was actually from Alex.
