Chapter 1029 You Have Good Taste
The more Nan Chen refused to reply, the more Ning Ran wanted to probe.
Oh, come on. Is that such a difficult question to answer? I'm clearly the prettier one! He must be blind if he can't tell.
“Fine. Don't say anything, then. I know what your answer is, anyway. You find Luo Zhiyi prettier,” Ning Ran fumed before jerking her head to the side.
Nan Chen frowned. “Did I say that?”
“You didn't, but that's what you're thinking!”
“How do you know what I'm thinking?”
“That's what you're thinking about, and I just know it!” Ning Ran retorted, knowing full well she was being somewhat unreasonable.
Then again, the best way to deal with someone as painfully rational as Nan Chen was by being the exact opposite.
After all, shouldn't a couple be talking about emotions instead of always taking the logical approach?
“Of course, you're prettier,” Nan Chen said resignedly, leaving Ning Ran buzzing with happiness.
“Glad to know you have good taste.”
Nan Chen couldn't help but sigh inwardly. Are all women this childish? She's already a mother of two, for goodness' sake. Why would she still ask such shallow and boring questions? To think she even lost
her temper when I refused to answer her!
Now that Ning Ran was in a cheerier mood, she nudged closer to Nan Chen and held his arm. “So, have you and Luo Zhiyi dated before?”
The latter hummed in response, which instantly sent Ning Ran reeling. Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
“What?” she exclaimed as she let go of the man's arm.
“Well, we weren't exactly in a relationship, but I guess we were close enough,” Nan Chen replied earnestly.
“What on earth do you mean by that? Did you guys date or not?”
By then, Nan Chen's patience was wearing thin. “Yes, and no. That's all in the past now. Let's not dwell on it.”
“Huh? Do you think I'd forget it just because you said so?” Ning Ran snapped. “You may think it's all in the past, but she doesn't share the same sentiment. She's still thinking about you, yet you neither accept nor reject her advances. What's the meaning of that? Do you have other intentions?”
Nan Chen's frown deepened. “Why would you still say this when I'm about to marry you?”
“But we aren't married yet, are we? Besides, there's always the possibility of you cheating on me after marriage. Everyone knows it's even more common for a married person to cheat on their spouse. Is that what you want? Are you planning to cheat on me after marrying me?”
Stunned by how ridiculous Ning Ran's train of thought was, Nan Chen decided to ignore her.
There was just no way he could bring himself to indulge in her unreasonable behavior.
Unfortunately, the more he stayed silent, the more curious Ning Ran was about his relationship with Luo Zhiyi.
Argh! Given my understanding of Nan Chen, it'd be impossible to pry any information out of him if he doesn't want to talk about something. Forget it. I shall slowly investigate this matter. I shouldn't be taking things too far, anyway. We were in a good mood, and I'd hate to ruin it.
One week later, in Wildefield, the capital of Caspardion, a desperado-themed party was going strong throughout the night.
A group of young men and women danced and drank their hearts out as they freely consumed the illegal drugs strewn on the table.
As it turned out, they were all wealthy heirs from China, some of whom had had to escape the country because of their criminal activities.
Others, however, had parents who committed crimes and decided to transfer their assets to Caspardion so their families could enjoy themselves.
In short, they could no longer return to China.
With an arm looped around a gorgeous woman's waist and a glass of wine in his other hand, Rong Jilin was in utter bliss when a tall lady wearing a black butterfly mask approached him.
“Are you Rong Jilin?”
Even though the woman was masked, it wasn't difficult to tell she had an incredible figure under her black dress. That, of course, caught Rong Jilin's interest.
“Who are you?”
“I want to talk to you in private,” the woman replied before glancing at the young lady in Rong Jilin's arms.
With that, Rong Jilin pushed his companion away, “Go play somewhere else for now.”
After shooting a look at the masked woman, the young lady did as instructed and strode off.
The masked woman promptly sat beside Rong Jilin and turned him down when he offered her a glass of wine, much to his surprise.
“I can't believe you aren't drinking in a place like this. What's the point, then? Did you come here just because you want to talk to me?”
“Yes. I came for you. The people at this party are all wealthy heirs who can no longer return to China. Are you also in the same plight?” the masked woman asked without missing a beat.
“Why do you care? Who on earth are you?” Rong Jilin retorted.
The next second, he attempted to remove the woman's mask, only to have the latter block him.
“Stop. Don't touch me,” she said coldly.
“Someone's a tough one, huh? What the h*ll do you want from me? Why do you have to behave so mysteriously?” Rong Jilin snapped.
What a cold blanket... I came here to have a good time, not to chat with someone so boring and uptight.
“Why can't you return to China? Did the Rong family chase you out?” the masked woman asked.
“Who are you exactly, and what do you want? If you're not here to drink, I'm not interested in talking to you.”
Despite Rong Jilin's fit of irritability, the masked woman remained unperturbed.
“It doesn't matter who I am. So long as you cooperate with me, I can get you back to China.”
Upon hearing that, Rong Jilin quietened down.
Return to China, huh? I must admit that's something I've been dreaming of... Even though I can indulge in anything I want here, it gets dull after a while. Besides, I've always wanted more than just a comfortable life. That said, what makes this woman think I'll trust her wholeheartedly? I'm not gullible.
“Who are you, and what makes you think you can help me return home?”
“As I said, it doesn't matter who I am. Just know that I can help you.”
“Why should I believe you?” Rong Jilin scoffed.
“Because I have connections,” the masked woman replied. “I was the one who lent a helping hand to several of the wealthy heirs here and brought them to Caspardion. If it weren't for me, their money would've been seized, and they'd be rotting in jail now. Since I can get them out of China, I'd also have my ways of sending you back there.”
Slowly but surely, Rong Jilin began to believe the woman's words.
Ah, yes... I've heard about a powerful woman who successfully helped some indicted officials get their children out of the country and even had their money transferred. Of course, she has her terms and conditions, but that's not something people would reveal.
“You're that woman everyone speaks of?” Rong Jilin finally asked.
“Yes, and I'm even more powerful than you can imagine. Tell me. Why can't you return home? Is it because you'd be thrown into jail? What crimes have you committed? Prosperity Holdings doesn't dabble in shady businesses, so what are you going to jail for?” the masked woman remarked.
When she saw Rong Jilin hesitating to speak, she added, “Look at the state you're in now. What else is there to hide? Don't forget you're in Caspardion. You can't be tried here for crimes committed in China. On top of that, I can guarantee you a safe passage home. Of course, you don't have to tell me anything if you don't intend to return.”
After much hesitation, Rong Jilian relented. “I messed with someone from the Nan family, and they forced me out of the country. They swore to throw me into jail if I ever returned. My brother went along with their decision, and that's why I'm here...”
“Which Nan family member did you mess with, and what did you do?”
“It's their kid. I kidnapped the boy to deal with Nan Chen and his wife, but the plan didn't work out.”
“Why not?”
Rong Jilin leaned back into the couch and took a big gulp of wine. “It's a long story.”
