Chapter 167
Chapter 167
Not long after Wesley fell asleep, Emma was about to tiptoe her way out of his bedroom just when the man's mobile phone rang. In the middle of the quiet night, the sudden ringtone sounded especially jarring amidst the silence, waking up Wesley once again. She then immediately tried to hang up the call for him, but when she saw the caller's identity on the phone screen, she froze in a trance. Soon, Wesley struggled to sit up straight and asked, "What's going on?"
Emma pursed her lips and passed Wesley's phone to him. "It's from Trevor." She clenched her jaw when she told Wesley who the caller was. After all, she had a bad feeling about the call that Trevor made to Wesley at the ungodly hour.
In response, Wesley raised his eyebrows and held the phone in his hand but didn't answer the call right away. Instead, he looked at Emma and asked, "It seems to me that he is looking for you. Don't you think so?" Deep down, he knew Trevor must have been restless and anxious after seeing the news about Emma's visit to his house. At the thought of that, he couldn't help but ridicule Trevor's action for trying to win back Emma's heart, thinking he should have done that before it was too late. I guess some people really don't know who or what matters most to them until they lose it. After that, they are overwhelmed by regret and guilt, which prompt them to make desperate attempts to regain what slipped away from them.
When Wesley said Trevor was calling for her, Emma shook her head in denial. "Nah, I beg to differ."
Wesley then glimpsed his ringing phone and turned his attention back to Emma. "You blocked his number, didn't you?"
"How did you know that?" Emma sounded surprised.
Wesley smiled upon hearing her and passed the phone back to her. "Pick up the call then. I'm sure he is calling for you." As a man himself, Wesley could empathize with Trevor because they were both in love with Emma. Thus, he knew what Trevor was thinking in his mind. Furthermore, he was no more than Trevor's business partner, which was all the more reason he was sure that Trevor wasn't calling to show him his concern about his illness, let alone discuss their work. For that, he couldn't think of any other reason Trevor was calling him if it weren't for Emma.
The next moment, Emma answered the call in a panicky manner shortly before she heard Trevor's nonchalant voice. "Are you now with that actor?"
Finding the way Trevor referred to Wesley a little offensive, Emma felt annoyed and irritable with that, but since Wesley was around, she decided not to refute Trevor and gave a terse reply instead. "Yes." Belongs © to NôvelDrama.Org.
"What about Minnie?" Trevor asked.
"I'm only away for one night," Emma answered.
"Come on. It's just a little kitten, so how could you just leave it like that?" Trevor talked as if Emma was abusing the cat.
What's wrong with this man? Emma was barely putting up with Trevor's provocative response, deeming it an attempt to find fault with her. After all, she had gotten Minnie's meal and water ready before she left, plus she wouldn't be away for a long time because she would be back home the next morning at the latest. Thus, she reckoned Trevor didn't have to criticize her that way. Stop acting like you care
about Minnie and get off your high horse, Trevor. We both know you're not someone who loves animals, so who are you to criticize me for that? Despite the thought of that, Emma refused to argue with Trevor. "If there is nothing else important, I'm going to hang up the call now."
Just when Emma was about to hang up the call, Trevor said, "I'll meet you to get the keys to your house and look after Minnie."
Emma rolled her eyes upward upon hearing Trevor's words, thinking it was totally unnecessary for him to go through the trouble. However, since the cat was a gift from the man himself, Emma went soft on Trevor and replied, "If you're worried about Minnie, I could tell Susanna to look after it instead. I wouldn't want to impose on you because it's getting late now." She hung up the call as soon as she finished her sentence. Deep down, she didn't want Trevor to take care of Minnie, believing he would mess it up, not to mention her reluctance to let him visit her house.
After Emma hung up the call, Wesley didn't ask her what she was talking about with Trevor but instead gently assured her he would be fine. "You can go now. I think I'll be fine managing myself."
"No, I'll stay until your fever subsides completely." Emma shook her head.
Wesley heaved a sigh of relief and said, "Thank you so much, Emma."
"Don't mention it." Emma didn't think of it as a big deal because Wesley also took care of her thoughtfully when she was admitted to the hospital due to her post-traumatic stress disorder after the kidnap. Therefore, now that Wesley had fallen ill, she couldn't allow herself to leave the sick man behind by himself. Soon, she added, "Go ahead and get some rest. If you need anything, just call out to me."
"Okay." Wesley tucked himself in his blanket and went ahead to rest. However, as soon as Emma left, the man began to ponder for a while and reached for his phone to send Trevor a text message. 'Mr. Bateson, I now have a high fever, so there is nothing I can do to her in my condition. Thus, I would go back home and get some sleep if I were you instead of wasting time trying to ruin everybody's night.' As a man himself, Wesley knew what Trevor was worried about, which was why he sent him the text message in the hope of making him stop messing around. After all, if Trevor kept doing what he was doing, neither of them would get a good rest throughout the night. While Wesley wasn't doing that for Trevor, he was doing that for Emma, whom he hoped could rest with peace of mind without Trevor's harassment for the rest of the night.
As Wesley correctly predicted Trevor's next move, the latter was actually waiting outside the former's house at that moment. Since Trevor also had properties in the same area in which Wesley was living, he had no trouble accessing the residential area even though he never once lived there. When Emma hung up on him, he stepped out of his car and was about to barge into Wesley's house for the lady just moments before he received Wesley's text message. It was only after reading the message that he was able to keep a cool head.
In fact, Trevor drove to Wesley's residence as soon as he split up with Zachary and Kaleb because he wanted to stop Emma from spending the night there with Wesley. Deep down, he even felt tempted to hurt Wesley at the thought of discovering something unacceptable the two of them had done. Nevertheless, his anger was conflicted by his reluctance to give up on Emma at the same time, even if he discovered something out of the ordinary between the two of them. Upon multiple failed attempts to reach Emma, Trevor had no choice but to turn his attention to Wesley until he received a message from the latter. Shortly after that, he sat in his car and puffed a cigarette before he eventually drove away.
Upon leaving Wesley's residence, Trevor went ahead to order his men to get rid of all the paparazzi that were lurking around the area to get a shot of Wesley's mysterious girlfriend. Convinced that Emma
would be known by the public one day, Trevor reckoned it would happen only because she was his girlfriend, not Wesley's. Otherwise, he would want Emma to be known as his wife or rather his ex-wife should things go against his favor because deep down. He wanted the whole world to know him as the man to whom Emma had ever been related.
The next morning, Wesley's fever finally subsided, much to Emma's relief. She then prepared breakfast for both of them and proceeded to have it with the man. After that, she decided it was time for her to bid goodbye when Wesley suggested giving her a ride after getting changed and grabbing the car keys. "I'm going to meet Zola later, so perhaps I could give you a ride home on my way there."
However, Emma was worried that the paparazzi would catch them together again and lead to unnecessary misunderstandings. "No need for that. I can take care of myself. You should go ahead and do what you must."
"I just looked outside the window, and I didn't see any paparazzi in sight." Wesley smiled in response.
Emma couldn't believe her ears, believing the paparazzi were tenacious at getting the shot they wanted. Shouldn't they be lurking around some place nearby to catch me at my most unsuspecting moment?
Wesley honestly replied, "I think Mr. Bateson took care of that."
Soon, Emma decided to go along with Wesley, grabbing her belongings before leaving with the latter. "Alright then, let's go." Deep down, she had to admit that it was much safer for her to leave Wesley's residence right after Trevor rid the place of the paparazzi. Nevertheless, she was still careful enough to disguise herself properly to avoid any unwanted exposure. Meanwhile, Wesley also kept a low profile with an ordinary-looking outfit in order to protect Emma from any unnecessary attention.
