Chapter 42: She’s Not an Outsider
Chapter 42: She’s Not an Outsider
On Saturday morning, when Hayden was still sleeping, Stella woke her up and dragged her up from the bed.
“Mommy, get up.”
Hayden glanced at the clock on the bedside table in a daze and said in a desperate tone, “Stella, it’s only 7 o’clock. What are you doing?”
Stella clung herself to one of Hayden’s arm and said righteously, “Mommy, it will be your first visit to Mr. Beckham’s house. Shouldn’t you dress up yourself? Hurry up. Get up, take a shower, wear a makeup and change your clothes.”
Hayden held onto her pillow feeling quite desperate.
How could her daughter be so unrestrained that whenever she saw a man she wished so much that he could be her mother’s boyfriend?
Being urged by Stella, Hayden casually wore a light make-up and took out a T-shirt and a pair of jeans that she usually wore on Weekends from the cabinet. Nevertheless, before she could change the clothes, she was dragged away by Stella.
“Mommy, how can you wear these?”
“Then what should I wear?”
“This one.” Stella dragged a claret-red backless dress from the cabinet, “This dress is beautiful.”
“Are you crazy?” Hayden patted Stella’s forehead sulkily, “We’re not going to a nightclub. Moreover, this is a formal dress. We’re just going to your classmate’s home to have fun with him, is there a need for me to wear a formal dress?”
“Then this one.” Stella was not discouraged and dragged a dusty blue dress out of the cabinet. “This one should be okay, right?”
Stella took out the dress from the cabinet and examined it for a while. It was indeed beautiful, but she was a bit hesitant, “Will it cause inconvenience if I wear a dress? You two are so naughty after all.”
“It won’t.” Stella raised her hand to make a vow, “I promise that I’ll be obedient today.”
“Only a fool would believe in your words.”
Hayden intended to ignore her, but Stella pulled her cloth and made a fuss to stop her from wearing the T-shirt and jeans. Having no choice, she finally wore the dusty blue dress.
At nine o’clock in the morning, the butler of the Beckham family drove a car to pick them up to the villa after preparing the breakfast.
“Young master has an important meeting to attend to this morning, so he’s not at home now and he asked me to send you and Stella to the villa first.”
“It’s okay.” Hayden expressed her understanding.
The butler was a middle-aged man in his forties. He looked quite composed and credible and drove steadily as well.
“Little Noah has suffered from several accidents recently and young master must feel sorry for these. He had fired most of the maids and manservants in the family and hired some new ones and is now wary of everyone. Therefore, I was quite shocked when I learnt that he had invited you to the house.”
“Maybe he relatively trusts me because I once saved Noah.” Hayden smiled but taunted inwardly: Everyone would be shocked. Even she herself felt very astonished.
When mentioning about the accident happened on Noah, Stella, who was sitting on a child safety seat, straightened up herself and heaved a sigh like an adult, which attracted Hayden’s attention.
“Why are you sighing? You’re so young, are you bothered by anything?” asked Hayden.
“I was sighing for Noah.” Stella wrinkled her brows, “See, Noah can’t speak and has a bad luck. I’ve never seen a child as hapless as him. Mommy, a teacher in the kindergarten said that when one is in the zodiac year of birth, he/she would have back lucks throughout that year. Is Noah in the zodiac year of birth?”
“What zodiac year of birth? Both of you are only five years old so the first zodiac year of his birth hasn’t come yet. Moreover, it’s a kind of superstitious belief. Which teacher has taught you this? And you actually take it seriously.”
Hayden felt a bit helpless but she felt distressed about Noah’s sufferings as well.
She had been acquainted with him for less than two months, yet he had had two serious accidents. If she hadn’t defended him from the falling of the ceiling lamp last time, this little boy would have died. And if it wasn’t because that his head was not hit in this accident, he would have died too.
Were these simply accidents? Hayden suddenly doubted this.
When they arrived at the Imperial Villa and got off the car, a small figure dashed out of the door and clung to Hayden’s leg.
A maid chased after him, “Oh… Little Noah… You haven’t washed your face.”
Hayden carried Noah into her arms, “Haven’t you washed your face? It’s okay. I will help him. Where’s the washroom?”
The maid pointed at the direction of the washroom, followed behind her, and shifted her gaze between Hayden and the little girl who was walking behind her, while saying emotionally, “You’re Ms. Downey, right? You look so young. And looks like your child is five or six years old?”
Stella looked around curiously after stepping into the villa with her eyes glittering like stars.
‘Oh, Noah’s home is so big! There are three ways to get on the stairs! And the house even has an elevator!’ Stella thought to herself and then started a conversation with the young maid who was leading her way.
Of course Hayden didn’t know what her daughter was thinking at the moment. She led Noah into the washroom and helped him wash his face and brush his teeth, and then asked, “I bring some desserts here, which were all made in the morning. Would you like to have some?”
Noah nodded joyfully.
The two of them then seated themselves on the table and opened the lunch box that Hayden brought. Seeing that Hayden was about to feed Noah, a maid who was responsible for taking care of Noah stopped her and said with a panicked look, “Ms. Downey, please wait a moment. Little Noah cannot have food brought from outside.”
“What?” Hayden was dumbfounded, still holding a piece of dessert.
The butler glared at the maid when hearing the words and reprimanded, “What nonsense are you talking about? Don’t you understand why the young master invited Ms. Downey to the house? Food from outside? What nonsense. I’m afraid that the food made by Ms. Downey is safer than that made by you in the eyes of the young master and Little Noah.”
Being scolded, the maid’s face turned pale and gloomy.
The butler then instructed the maids, “All right, go ahead with your business. You don’t need to stay here. The young master has instructed me that he hopes Ms. Downey and Stella can feel free to have fun here. We’ll call you when you’re needed.”
The five maids dispersed after hearing the instruction.
Hayden heaved a sigh of relief inwardly and threw a grateful glance at the butler, “Oh, they finally leave. I’m not accustomed to have a meal under others’ stares.”
The butler lowered his head apologetically, “It’s all my fault. I haven’t arranged things well. Ms. Downey, please enjoy the meal. If you need our help, feel free to call me or the other servants.”
“Okay.” Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.
After this brief interlude, Hayden finally felt relaxed and began to enjoy the meal.
Noah showed a good appetite during the breakfast – he had had a streamed bun, two pieces of desserts and a bowl of rice porridge. The maids, who were watching them from afar, were surprised and discussed it in whispers.
After the accident in the villa last time, most of the servants were fired. And now the maids in the house were newly recruited and they were relatively not that perfect in their manners and bold. Now they were discussing about Hayden secretly.
“Why Little Noah is so fond of Ms. Downey?”
“I heard that she’s the mother of one of Little Noah’s classmate. See, that little girl is his classmate.”
“Oh gosh, that little girl is really adorable. She gave me some candies just now. Could it be that Little Noah takes fancy to that little girl?”
“Bullshit! He’s just a child.”
“No offence. Just a joke. But I think the young master has some special feelings for Ms. Downey. I heard from a maid who once worked here that the young master never brings a woman back home. Even his fiancée, Ms. Kidman, who has been together with him for five or six years, seldom comes here.”
“Oh, could it be that the young master and Ms. Downey…”
