Reclaiming My Broken Luna 2

Chapter 311: Illusions

Astrid's POV

The sun kissed my skin as I stood on the shoreline, watching Ryker and Killian splash in the surf.noveldrama

Laughter carried on the breeze, mingling with the rhythmic crash of the waves.

For once, I allowed myself to relax, to pretend that everything was exactly as it should be.

We were like a real family bonding together at the beach. Ryker's smile - bright and carefree - was enough to make m believe in the illusion, even just for a moment.

I imagined everything was well with us, Killian and I were still married and that Ryker thinks I'm his mother.

It was a good thought, a great illusion, but it was far from the truth. Still, I couldn't help it. It was nice to indulge myself with the fantasy.

I let myself breathe, inhaling the salty tang of the sea breeze. It was a rare thing, this kind of peace. I've never felt this peaceful since I found out that my son is alive.

For the first time, I felt I was alive again. Being with my son, seeing him safe and happy I finally could feel what happiness is like.

My breath hitched when something pricked at the back of my mind — an unease I couldn't quite shake. Even before we had left the Pack, that feeling had already lingered like a shadow creeping into my thoughts as we travelled to the beach.

The Pack is located at a remote spot in the middle of the forest just like any other Packs. To go to the nearest beach, we had to travel so far.

Something about the distance gnawed at me. With the recent rogue attack, it felt unsafe to go on a trip with just the three of us.

However, I chose to keep my fears to myself instead of voicing it to Killian.

I thought about how we never had the chance to have a day like this- just the three of us and now we finally have that chance.

Ryker also wanted to go to the beach, it's his birthday wish. We already ruined his birthday by using it to lure the rogues to a trap. Killian and I want to make it up to him, we wanted him to be happy.

So, despite the creeping feelings in my gut, I kept my mouth shut. I pushed the unease aside, convincing myself that it was just anxiety, a negative feeling and I can't let that get in the way of our happiness. Besides, I'm a best skilled warrior, and Killian is a powerful Alpha; we could protect ourselves if anything went wrong.

What could possibly happen on a sunny beach day?

I scanned the beach, seeing nothing out of the ordinary just the same gentle waves and the distant line where the sky meets the sea.

I forced myself to relax, telling myself it was nothing that I was only scaring myself with my unwarranted thoughts.

"Astrid, Ryker wants to swim!" Killian shouted at me with a smile on his face. "Would you like to swim with us?" he asked me.

I wanted to join in. It's not every day that we could go to the beach especially since we live in the forests, but my eyes kept drifting back to the horizon.

That's when I noticed it - something caught my eye, a small figure moved past. It disappeared so fast that anyone would think it was nothing, but I knew then that something was indeed wrong.

This beach is far from any civilization that's why Killian chose to be here. No one is supposed to be here except for us.

"Killian," I called, my voice quieter than I intended.

He didn't hear me, he was focused on Ryker.

I swallowed when the figures finally came out of hiding sensing that I already caught sight of them.

They started approaching and it turns out there were more of them, fanning out as they moved closer. My instincts flared.

This time, I raised my voice. "Killian, we need to go."

He paused looking back at me with

instantly the moment he saw approaching figures, replaced by the alertness of an Alpha preparing for trouble.

"Stay close," he ordered, his voice tight as he held Ryker close to him.

I instantly carried Ryker in my arms as Killian positioned himself in front of us, his stance protective and ready.

The attackers surged forward, moving as one and I took off with only getting Ryker to safety in my mind. I barely had time to process what was happening. The beach, so peaceful moments ago, erupted into chaos.

Although Killian was trying his best to fend them off, the attackers weren't interested on him, some of them chased after us.

A sharp sting bit into my shoulder while I was running. I gasped, stumbling back as I felt the burning sensation spread.

Ryker fell to the sand beside me.

I reached up, my fingers brushing against the small dart lodged in my skin.

Panic flared as pain shot through me, spreading like fire.

My vision blurred, and a strange weakness gripped my body, threatening to consume me.

"Killian-" I tried to call out, but my voice was weak.

The substance in the dart was like poison, burning through my veins, making it hard to stand, let alone

fight.

This wasn't just wolfsbane. As a

warrior, have strong tolerance on wolfsbane. For something to be able to knock me down easily like this, it got to be something else.

Ryker clung to my side, his small hand trembling in mine.

I had to protect him. I couldn't let them take him, not when I only just had him.

But my strength was fading fast and the world around me tilted. It would only be a minute before the attackers pressed in on us.
