The kidnapper lied… But he did it for the sake of his family. He had no other options. Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.
Jeremy texted Joanna, “Ms. Lowell, Winston visited the prison today.”
Joanna was at work. Her heart started racing when she saw the message. She replied, “What did he ask?”
Jeremy wrote, “Who saved him back then?”
Joanna felt overwhelmed momentarily and calmly asked, “What did the man reply?”
Jeremy replied, “Don’t worry. He said what we told him to say.”
Joanna felt a pang of guilt. Winston didn’t trust her. He was suspicious by nature. Despite telling her he loved her and wanted to marry her, he was secretly investigating if she was the one who saved him.
At the same time, Millie pushed open the office door, and Vanessa immediately approached her. “Dr. Caldwell, you spent a lot of money yesterday, didn’t you? You’re so generous.”
Millie casually gathered her hair and tied it up. When she noticed Joanna, she replied in a casual tone, “I didn’t pay the bill last night.”
Joanna looked up as soon as she heard it. Wasn’t she the one who paid for last night’s meal?
“I have to thank you, Dr. Lowell,” Millie approached Joanna, resting her arms on the partition and gazing at her with a smile.
Joanna was puzzled by her sudden gratitude. “What do you mean?”
“Mr. Greer was the one who paid the bill.” Millie grinned.
Joanna’s face immediately turned red. She couldn’t believe that Winston actually paid for the bill. She intentionally ordered so many lobsters just to mess with Millie. But she didn’t expect Winston to cover
the bill in the end.
“Mille, you…” Joanna pointed at Millie.
Millie spread her hands helplessly. “I truly wish to pay for it, but Mr. Greer insists otherwise. I can’t refuse such kindness.”
Joanna was seething with anger. Her efforts to set Millie up had been completely futile!
“So we should thank Dr. Lowell instead,” Millie said. Then, she yawned and returned to her seat.
“But Mr. Greer is your husband,” Vanessa couldn’t help but mutter.
Joanna was unhappy when she heard the words. Their marriage is nothing but a facade!”
Vanessa retorted, “Even if their marriage is just a facade, they’re a
lly wedded couple with a marriage certificate. But Dr. Lowell, what’s the nature of your relationship with Mr. Greer?”
Joanna angrily stood up and shouted, “Dr. Xander, I advised you to stay out of this matter!”
Millie gazed silently at Vanessa. She realized that everyone was aware of the truth, yet no one dared to speak of it.
“Who are you to stop me?” Vanessa snorted. She had always disliked Joanna.
Wanda noticed Joanna getting berated and was about to defend her. However, Wanda then saw Lainey entering the office with a blank expression.
Lainey gave a stern look to the people present and said, “I overheard your argument from afar. This is not a place to get in a catfight. Get back to work!
Vanessa snorted, grabbed the medical record, and left.
Joanna’s face paled. The office was bustling with people as it was early in the morning. Vanessa’s questioning had left her feeling deeply embarrassed.
Winston and Millie had not officially divorced yet, Joanna’s interactions with Winston had led them to view her as nothing more than a mistress.
Suddenly, Hazel knocked on the door. “Dr. Caldwell, Mr. Greer is looking for you. He’s waiting outside
now.”
When everyone heard “Mr. Greer” being mentioned, they all averted their gaze toward Hazel.
Millie was confused and asked, “Is it Winston?”
“Yes.”
Joanna couldn’t help but feel uneasy. She wondered why Winston came to see Millie after visiting prison.
“Got it.” After informing Lainey about it, Millie went out.
Joanna sat anxiously in her office, an uneasiness growing within her.
What did Winston want to say to Millie? Did Winston find out that it was Millie who had saved him that day?
