Just like Joanna, all Millie wanted was to love Winston and be with him. What had she done wrong?

It had been a terrible three years.

She listened as Winston coaxed Joanna in a gentle tone that sent a knife through her heart. She turned her head a few times to glance at him.

He was

was so surreal when he acted tenderly.

Lowering her gaze, she smiled bitterly, thinking, “Hey, Winston Greer, don’t forget I’m still in your car.”

She finally spoke when their car arrived in the downtown area. “Just pull over by the road. I’ll get a cab back home.”

While speaking, she had unbuckled her seatbelt. “Thanks for the ride.”

“I’ll send you home,” he said gruffly.

She shook her head. “It’s fine.” She couldn’t withstand another second around him; it was simply too suffocating.

After he pulled over, she proceeded to leave his car. He called out to her, “Millie.”

“Yeah?” She looked at him calmly despite the raging storm within.

“I’m sorry,” he croaked.

Her lashes trembled. The blood surged when she heard his apology.

The simple words conveyed a lot of meaning he had to pick Joanna because he had a responsibility to her; he had to give up on Millie; he did not love Millie…”

Shaking her head, she held back her tears and swiftly got out of the car. She turned her back to the car, fearing she might break down in front of him and make him think that she still cared for him.

It wasn’t until he left that she dared take a look at the back of his car. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably as pain stung her heart.

He should have apologized many more times to her, as he had wronged her on multiple occasions.

Wiping away her tears, she felt out of place in the bustling downtown, where everyone looked cheerful. Content rights by NôvelDr//ama.Org.

Without warning, it started to rain. Some of the passersby hurriedly sought shelter, while some others strolled with an umbrella.

Unlike anyone else, she slowly looked up to the sky, allowing the raindrops to hit her face. She wanted to be drenched.

Millie absentmindedly wandered into a luxury brand store. The amount of outfits and bags on display was astounding.

She couldn’t help but think of the dress Winston bought for her. A teenage romance was certainly

hard to forget.

She reached out to touch a dress, only to be stopped by a shrill voice. “Madam, that’s an expensive

item! You can’t touch it!”

She turned and saw a store employee staring at her like she was a monster. Then, she looked at her reflection in the mirror. Indeed, she was like a monster–drenched from head to toe and filthy.

“I’m sorry.” Millie gave the employee an apologetic nod.

Not far away, a man waiting in a corner slowly lowered the magazine he was reading and fixed his

attention on her.

When Millie was leaving, she ran into a woman who had come into the store. The woman was dressed to the nines and decked out in jewelry–a stark contrast to Millie.

Millie had chosen a simple outfit for the visit to Selma’s place that day.

The woman couldn’t help but stare when she walked past Millie. Then, she approached the store employee, grumbling, “Who’s that? She’s so unkempt

“Oh! Welcome, Ms. Norton. Are you going shopping today?” The employee’s eyes lit up at the sight of Kelly Norton, and she immediately greeted her in an ingratiating manner.

“I happened to pass by, and I’d like to check for new designs.” Kelly swept her gaze past Millie with a/ pout and a look of disdain. “Since when have you been allowing any Tom, Dick, and Harry into the store?”

Picking up on Kelly’s contempt, the employee played along. “Right? She should look at herself in the mirror before stepping into a luxury brand store Look. She’s stained the floor. She should’ve searched for an appropriate place to take shelter from the rain!

Kelly and the employee murmured to each other while casting piercing looks at Millie, which made her

uneasy.

Millie saw the two women through the glass window. The employee grumbled, “Oh, just my luck!” The employee met Millie’s despairing gaze when they locked eyes. Then, she yelled at Millie, “What are you staring at? Get out of here, you dirty thing!”

Kelly peered at Millie before tapping her nose as if Millie smelled. Snorting, she expressed her disdain for Millie, which she mistook as a poor woman.

Millie could handle being labeled as an eye candy, but she would not tolerate being called ugly or poor. Her face soured, and she said flatly to the employee, I’m buying up everything in your store.
