Chapter 26 Job Application

Caroline's hand was still trembling as she watched David retreat.

Only when David completely disappeared from her sight did she finally lower the blade from her neck and let out a long exhale.

A bodyguard who stood by her side stepped forward and snatched the knife away from her. "Madam, you're bleeding." Paul commented.

Caroline's pale neck bore a thin, shallow wound. There were faint traces of blood on it.

It seemed like she did use too much force, the knife got too close to her skin and cut her.

"It's fine." She forced a smile, "I won't die here."

I'm still alive, and my hands are still intact, this alone is worth celebrating. Caroline thought.

Looking down, Caroline opened and closed her fingers repeatedly. Clearly, she was still shaken.

If I hadn't broken free from the guards and grabbed the knife in time, my hands would surely be gone by now! David is too cruel, he's truly a demon.

"I'm sorry, Madam," the butler apologized. "I was the one who asked Mr. David to intervene. I feared that Elizabeth would harm you. I genuinely thought Mr. David would stand by your side, but instead..."

"I don't blame you," Caroline interrupted. "Just let them side together."

She had once thought that David was a man with standards, that he would only pay attention to extraordinary women. But as it turned out, even someone as mediocre as Elizabeth could win him over. What low standards. So what if he's rich? He has no taste at all!

Caroline returned to her room and found some cream and cotton swabs. She then awkwardly tried to treat her own wound in front of the mirror. Just then, her phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Caroline, it's been over a month. Are things settled at home yet?" It was her best friend, Anna. "Are you still planning to look for a job?"

Anna was her college roommate, they would share anything with each other.

Caroline had recently just graduated, but her freedom was restricted by her own family. Her parents had used her marriage into the Ellison family as an excuse to assign bodyguards who shadowed her wherever she went. It was done to prevent her from escaping the engagement.

After the wedding, David essentially confined her to his house, which is why she couldn't find a proper job until now.

"Of course, I need to find a job. How else am I supposed to eat?" Caroline replied. "Do you have any work

to recommend?"

Caroline knew that she had to rely on herself because she's the only dependable person in her life, especially now that she's pregnant.

Anna started recommending jobs to Caroline with much enthusiasm. "Yes, I have one! Great benefits, insurance, paid vacation, bonuses, and it aligns perfectly with our major. I scheduled an interview this afternoon. Let's go together!"

"Alright," Caroline agreed. "We'll meet at our usual spot

Caroline had majored in chemistry, and her ideal job involved developing skincare products, cosmetics, perfumes, and lipsticks, a role known as a formulation scientist.

Because of her expertise, Caroline rarely used store-bought products, instead, she chose to rely on her own methods. This was why her skin was always flawless and radiant.

Like a ripe peach in spring.

However...

Standing before a skyscraper so tall it seemed to pierce the clouds, Caroline hesitated, "This is the company you found for us?"

"Yep!" Anna nodded enthusiastically. "Ellison Group, the number one company nationwide. Its market

value is in the billions. People would kill to work here. This recruitment isn't even public, I had to pull some strings just to find out about it!"

It feels odd working at my husband's company... Caroline thought.

But Caroline needed a job.

Besides, she thought. As the CEO, David would be swamped with work. There's so many employeesnoveldrama

here, surely, he wouldn't know every single one. As long as I avoid him at work, it will be fine.

Linking arms with Anna, Caroline smiled. "Alright, let's go. Hopefully, we both get hired!"
