Chapter 149 Return To M City (Part One)
Chapter 149 Return To M City (Part One)
After standing outside for a long time,
Spencer finally decided to walk back to the meeting room. Suddenly, he received a call from Ethan.
Before he pressed the green button, he took a deep breath and mentally readied himself to talk to his
father. "Hello? Dad?"
Spencer called out with a bitter smile. Ethan's roar then came from the earpiece. "Wow! So you still
remember that I'm your father?! What's the matter between you and Celine? Tell me! Are you really
trying to piss me off? What do you think you'll get from this?!"
Spencer closed his eyes in anguish and said, "It's all my fault."
"Of course it's your fault! Do you know what the kind of heinous accusations you'll have to face? Men
don't do such thing to their sisters! What were you thinking, Spencer?" Ethan was trembling with anger.
It took him a while to get himself together, but when he did, he immediately changed the topic and
asked, "Are you just angry at me? Is it because of my relationship with your aunt Anna? Is that the
reason why you've always been against me? Do you not like Fiona?"
Spencer frowned as he rubbed his temples in an effort to alleviate the headache that was building up
inside his head. Ethan was sounding impossible to deal with at that moment, and he didn't know how to
say what he wanted to say, but he was determined.
"The prosecutors have called me. They told me that they want Fiona to go with Celine so that both of
them could be investigated," Ethan said in a helpless tone. "Why didn't you save Fiona when she was
taken away by Charles? Can't you let go of your mother's death? It's not Fiona's fault!"
Spencer clenched his fists. He used to be someone who would think too much, who would dare not to
do something he wanted if it would be detrimental to anyone at all. Because of the responsibilities he
grew up having, he thought it was imperative of him to always come up with the perfect solution to
every problem. However, because of this, he ignored the things he cared most—one of them being
Fiona's feelings. But now, after everything that had happened, he knew that next time, he would not
hesitate to save Fiona. The lives of other people were not as important as Fiona's.
"Why are you so quiet?" asked Ethan.
"Fiona doesn't need to be investigated," Spencer said in a low voice.
"What? You think that she doesn't need to be investigated?" Ethan asked, obviously perplexed. "Are
you hearing yourself? Who do you think you are? What makes you think that such a decision is up to
you to make?"
"I've already divorced her, Dad. She has nothing to do with me now so she doesn't have to go to places
like the court."
"What? What are you saying?!" Even though Ethan had already experienced a lot in the past few days,
he couldn't help but raise his voice at his son. "Spencer! You divorced Fiona without my permission?
Why? Why didn't you tell me in advance? Are you really out of your mind, Spencer? Are you really
crazy?! You really want to give me and your grandfather a heart attack, huh?!"
"Don't you dare tell Grandpa anything! Just...wait. After I solve the problems in P City, I'll go back and
solve the problems Fiona and I have. So please, just wait, " Spencer said hurriedly.
"You don't need to worry about anything that's happening in P City. Go back to M City immediately!"
Ethan screamed. "I'm warning you, Spencer—even if you divorce Fiona, Celine is still your sister! And
even if I divorce Anna, I will never let Celine marry into the Cheng family! Remember that!"
"Let's talk about that some other time! As for M City... I'm not going back any time soon," said Spencer
firmly.
"Spencer! Don't you ever think—even for one goddamn second—that I can't control you now that
you're grown! Understood? If I order you to come back to M City, you will, whether you like it or not!
And besides, with your current state, it's best that you go back! Do you hear me?"
Spencer's eyes narrowed and he said, "I'm sorry but I won't be taking any order from anyone, even
from you. I'll call you again after I get rid of Charles. Bye for now." With that, he pulled the phone away
from his ear and hung up quickly.
"Hello? Spencer?! Hello?! You—" Beep! Beep! Beep!
Spencer turned his phone off with much conviction. Unfortunately for his father, he wasn't scared of him
anymore—now that he was set on facing Charles, he would not accept any other conclusion but
Charles' death! Only by achieving that ending would he find peace inside himself.
As for the baby in Fiona's belly, while he had been praying that it was his, he somehow couldn't find it
in him to know for sure.
"Spencer!"
"Spencer!"
Eric and Daniel were already waiting for him at the door of the meeting room. The both of them quickly
walked up to him the moment they saw Spencer coming over.
"What's happening? Where is Fiona?" asked Eric.
"George took her back to M City. I didn't go with her, so I'm here," Spencer answered, frowning.
"Wait. Why did George bring Fiona to M City?" Daniel asked. "It's none of his business to care about
her."
Eric condescendingly patted Daniel's shoulder, as if to indicate that it also wasn't his business. Then,
he once again turned to Spencer and asked, "What about Celine? When will you send her back to M
City?" This is property © of NôvelDrama.Org.
"Today," Spencer replied passively. Since Fiona had left, he had no desire to see or talk to Celine
anymore. Unexpectedly, within less than half a year, his yearning and love for Celine disappeared
completely because of Fiona.
"Then I'll go ahead and arrange for someone to prepare the helicopter," Daniel said, leaving soon after.
With Daniel gone, there were only two people left outside the meeting room: Eric and Spencer. When
Spencer was about to leave as well, Eric stopped him.
"Hmn? You need anything else?" asked Spencer.
Eric was already frowning when he asked, "What are you thinking? I'm talking to you as a friend. I can
tell from your behavior that you had your own reasons to divorce Fiona. Do you know that I have
persuaded her not to hate you? But why? Why do you insist on divorcing her? Tell me. Give me a
reason. Why?"
Spencer cast a meaningful glance at Eric and said slowly, "I don't want Fiona to go to the prosecutors
to be investigated. The only way I could make that happen is divorcing her. Aside from that, Celine
wouldn't vent her anger on Fiona after I divorced her. That is especially important because Fiona
indeed pushed Celine and caused her to have a miscarriage."
Eric had already guessed that everything Spencer did was for Fiona's own good. But he still had
something to ask.
"Do you blame Fiona for what happened to Celine?" he asked.
"What do you think?" Spencer snorted and continued with self-mockery, "To be honest, I actually feel
quite happy. Is that too cruel of me? Did Fiona care too much about me that she was able to push
Celine down? She didn't want me to get too close to Celine, huh?"
"But why wouldn't you just tell Fiona all of this? She knows nothing. Don't you think that that's unfair?"
Eric couldn't understand what Spencer was trying to do.
"I just want to take care of some things myself," Spencer answered. He let out a deep sigh and
continued, "I know that she's currently dealing with a lot of things. What's worse, Celine and I have
done something so hurtful to her. That is something I just can't let go. And besides, our marriage has
not been entirely happy. I want to start all over again with her. When I go back to M City, we will have a
fresh slate, and I will not mess it up."
Eric stared at Spencer in surprise. Yes, he knew that Spencer was a thoughtful man, but he didn't
expect that he was someone like this!
"Well, what about the baby?" Eric asked tentatively.
A hint of disappointment flashed through Spencer's eyes. He responded, "I can allow that child to exist,
but I can't allow Fiona to spend too much time on it."
"What?" Eric stood there silent, his eyes wide open and his mouth agape. For so many reasons, he
couldn't believe what he just heard. Was this the person he knew? How could a man who was so proud
accept a child that might be another man's?
Spencer seemed to have realized that Eric was ogling at him, and so he said, "You think I'm
handsome?" With a smile on his face, he started walked towards the meeting room. "Let's go. We still
have a meeting to attend to. And we better prepare well—the battle we'll fight tomorrow night will be a
spectacle!"
Eric was still stunned and failed to respond to Spencer in time. After a while, however, he came to his
senses. "What? Yes!" he exclaimed, as he chased after Spencer into the meeting room.
Spencer's expression suddenly turned stone cold. There was another reason why he decided to
divorce Fiona: he didn't have the confidence that he would be able to walk out of X's base alive. If he
died, would Fiona be a solitary widow for the rest of her life? He didn't want her to have any other man
in her life, but he also didn't want to stop her from being happy and having someone by her side. Since
Fiona wanted to keep the baby inside her womb, he didn't have to worry anymore. That child will be the
one to keep her company for the rest of her life!
