The Day Our Promise Breaks (Charles and Evelyn)

Chapter 227

As soon as Charlie's name lit up on his phone, he'd know exactly where she was. He could finally see her. He blocked all other calls today to make sure he didn't miss her call. The whole town was buzzing with news from morning to afternoon. Everyone was talking about it-media, online platforms, you name it. Everyone in town knew, so surely Charlie did, too. But his phone stayed silent, and with each passing moment, Charles' mood darkened.

He knew Charlie was a sweetheart. She wouldn't ignore his efforts if she saw them. The only thing stopping her had to be Evelyn. Evelyn had been Charlie's rock because she raised her single-handedly, and Charlie adored her. If Evelyn said no, Charlie would push down her longing to reach out and obey Evelyn's wishes.

Charles didn't blame Charlie for siding with Evelyn. But Evelyn had to understand... He had gone above and beyond to show he wanted to make things right with Charlie. Things he hadn't done for Sandy. All he did for Sandy's last birthday was rent out Disneyland for a fireworks show. He bought an entire amusement park for Charlie and planned to name it after her. He even arranged for her favorite fairy tale characters to join her for the fireworks and games.

He'd done everything he could think of. So, what right did Evelyn have to keep Charlie from him? Evelyn's stubbornness dampened Charles' excitement. He frowned and called her.

Evelyn was still at the hospital when Charles' name flashed on her phone. She had just read about his grand gesture. He had rented out all the city's billboards with the message: [Daddy loves Charlie too.] A sardonic smile crept onto her face. None of his big gestures moved her; she found them ironic. Why now? Charlie was already gone, and only now did he want to flaunt his so-called fatherly love. How laughable.

With a steely demeanor, Evelyn answered his call. Charles' voice, laced with frustration, filled her ear "Evelyn, Charlie is our daughter! Can't you be reasonable and move on from the past? You're ignoring what Charlie truly wants and forcing her not to see me!"

Charles refused to believe that Charlie knew about his surprise and wouldn't want to see him. Her. drawings and words clearly showed how much she longed for a day with him at the amusement park.

"You really want to see Charlie? Fine, I'll let you," Evelyn suddenly said. Her voice was a bit rough, but her tone

"Yes!" Evelyn replied, not wasting another word before hanging up. After glancing at Rosa, asleep in her hospital bed, Evelyn quickly spoke with Marian outside and then left to find Charles.
