Chapter 73: Just Like That
Chapter 73: Just Like That
Simone could sense that something had happened just by looking at Gwen’s expression. She asked, “Did you have an argument with him?”
Gwen shook her head. “It wasn’t really an argument.”
She looked relieved and said, “I suddenly realized something. After pursuing him for so many years, I haven’t captured his heart. It’s pointless.”
She shrugged. “So, I gave up.”
Simone was surprised. “You really gave up this time? Are you willing to let go?”
Gwen forced a smile that was uglier than crying. “I’m willing. I truly gave up.”
“If you’re willing to let go of Leon, then I’m willing to let go of Harold.”
She continued, “It was your inspiration that helped me make up my mind. Otherwise, I might have continued to waste my youth on him.”Content © provided by NôvelDrama.Org.
That was the truth. She saw Simone break up with Leon and suddenly understood a lot of things.
Simone agreed. “You’re right; why waste our youth on someone who isn’t worth it? I support you!”
Gwen reached out and played with Simone’s fingertips, sighing, “Simone, I suddenly realized that our experiences are similar. You were abandoned by your family, and when you found your way back, they favored the adopted daughter. As for me, although I haven’t experienced abandonment, my parents don’t love me either. And we both have childhood sweethearts that we like. But these two people are both heartless individuals.”
Her eyes turned red, but she didn’t cry. “It seems like we’re a bit unlucky and miserable.”
Simone knew that Gwen must be feeling sad about letting go of Harold.
Just like in her previous life, she was betrayed by her family and Leon, and it broke her heart.
She held Gwen’s hand and squeezed it. “That was in the past. We’ll have a better future. It’s better to endure a short pain than a long one, and it’s better to feel pain early than late. It’s just family and men. If we don’t want them, we don’t need them.”
She continued, “Like the two of us. We’re not blood sisters, but we’re closer than blood sisters. And as for men, out with the old, in with the new. Just like that.”
Gwen nodded vigorously, “Yes, just like that. From now on, we’ll live completely for ourselves. To hell with family and men, we’ll leave them all behind.”
After saying that, she asked, “I feel like drinking. Do we have any alcohol at home?”
Simone shook her head. “No, we didn’t buy any.”
“How about I order takeout?” Gwen snapped her fingers, “Order, order, order!”
Simone used her phone to order takeout.
The two of them sat on the couch, enjoying the food and drinking ice-cold beer.
Gwen raised her glass and clinked it with Simone’s. “To a new life!”
Simone laughed, “To a new life!”
Just then, Gwen’s phone started ringing. She glanced at it and saw that it was her mother calling.
Gwen hesitated for a moment before answering, “Hello, Mom?”
Melinda’s cold voice came through the phone, “Gwen, where are you? Why haven’t you come home yet?”
Gwen responded nonchalantly, “I’m with Simone. I’ll come back later.”
Melinda chided her, “Gwen, you’re being unreasonable.”
Gwen continued to be nonchalant, “I don’t want to argue with you. I’ll come back when I feel like it.”
Melinda’s voice grew sharper, “Gwen, you need to come back now. It’s already late.”
Gwen sneered, “Mrs. Foster, are you mistaken? You can’t control me anymore.”
Melinda’s voice turned colder, “Gwen, if you don’t come back within an hour, don’t ever come back.”
Gwen’s eyes filled with anger, but she maintained her composure. “Fine. If that’s what you want, I won’t come back.”
She hung up the phone and took a deep breath to calm herself.
Simone looked at Gwen with concern. “Are you okay?”
Gwen forced a smile, “I’m fine. Just annoyed.”
Simone reached out and patted Gwen’s shoulder. “You have me, Gwen. We’ll get through this together.”
Gwen nodded, feeling grateful for Simone’s support. “Yes, we will.”
With that, the two friends continued to enjoy their meal and drink, determined to live their lives on their own terms, free from the constraints of their families and past relationships.
