What Separates Me and You
Chapter 14 But She’s a Grown-up Now
Josephine’s fingers suddenly tightened in fright, crumpling the pregnancy test.
results in her hand. After registering the situation, she flipped the form over on the
sofa.
Standing up, she turned around and looked at Lewis as she tried hard to calm herself
down.
“I was looking at the divorce agreement. Do you want to have a look?” she asked.
Lewis stared at her fingers, then shifted his gaze to her face as his eyes darkened. It was as if the temperature in the room had dropped several degrees.
He strode toward Josephine and stood in front of her, extending his fingers. “Let me
have a look.”
The woman’s expression froze as she looked into his bottomless gaze. Her fingers. were clenched tightly together.
“Aren’t we getting a divorce? Let me see it.” He moved his hand a little closer, his gaze piercing into her as if he could see right through her.
Josephine didn’t know whether he had changed his mind or had seen through her lie, but she dared not give it to him.
She had already lost one child and didn’t want to risk the life of another.
Trembling, Josephine reached out her hand and placed it in his.
Then, she leaned her face against his chest and nudged it lightly.
Lewis‘ expression was inscrutable, and he didn’t move.
After a while, she let go of him, took a step back, and gestured with her hands.
“I know I was wrong. I don’t want a divorce anymore.”
He raised an eyebrow nonchalantly. “Really?”
She nodded, looking straight at him with sincerity.
After a moment, his expression finally softened. Gently, he stroked her face and said.
in a soft voice, “Then don’t let me see that word again, okay?”
Josephine clenched her fingers and nodded, showing him a faint smile. Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.
He withdrew his hand and turned around to go upstairs.
Josephine let out a sigh and sat weakly on the sofa. She picked up the pregnancy
test report again, tore it to pieces, crumpled them up, and threw them into the trash can, completely destroying the evidence.
Lewis went into his study, seemingly with no plans to leave for the night.
Josephine went to the kitchen and made a table full of dishes.
She went to the door of the study and knocked four times, which was the secret. code they had agreed upon.
Four knocks meant “come eat,” three knocks meant “need to talk,” and two knocks meant “brought you something.”
Soon after, Lewis came down from upstairs. He had changed into a loose, deep gray home attire that accentuated his slim body.
His hair was down, and the coldness on his face disappeared, making him look as young as a college student in his 20s.
Changing into this outfit was an indication that he would not be going out unless the sky was falling. This habit of his had proven to be true.
When they were eating together, his phone rang. Josephine glanced at it out of the corner of her eye. It was a call from Sierra.
As expected, he looked at the phone, silenced it, and placed it upside down on the
table.
Even when his beloved girlfriend was injured in the hospital, he would not break hist
rules.
He lifted his gaze to look at Josephine, and she immediately lowered her head, eating silently.
They finished the meal in silence.
When Josephine was done washing the dishes, Lewis was sitting on the sofa. Come here,” he beckoned to her.
She paused for a moment, then walked over and sat down next to him.
He took out the remote control and turned on the TV, freeing up one hand to wrap it around her shoulder. He turned sideways to look at her and said, “Which cartoon do you want to watch? I’ll watch it with you.”
Josephine looked at his face, which was so close to hers, and her expression turned
blank for a bit.
For a moment, it was as if she had returned to her childhood.
When she didn’t respond, he chose an episode of Phineas and Ferb and played it.
The familiar melody played, and there was a glint of tears in Josephine’s eyes.
When she was ten, Daphne had teased her for watching Phineas and Ferb and snatched the remote control to change the channel.
Lewis walked over and forcefully changed it back to Phineas and Ferb. Then, he sat next to her like this to watch it with her.
But…she hadn’t watched cartoons for a while now.
She was already a grown–up.
