Chapter 39
Chapter 39 Cannot Count On Him What he said set the livestream room abuzz. Cedric was known for being a heartless man, but how could he be so callous when Zera was on the verge of killing herself?
When Zera saw Cedric, her eyes were filled with hope again. “I knew you'd come, Cedric. You broke my heart, you know...” She sobbed, clutching at her chest.
Maia guessed that she would step down from the edge and throw herself into his arms before pretending to pass out. And that was exactly what Zera ended up doing... It was the same old trick again. Maia didn’t bother to see what happened next and logged off the livestream.
She checked the time and saw that there was only 10 hours left until the inauguration ceremony tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. She had to hurry.
Maia then picked up the detailed account statements from the coffee table and drove away from Cloud Nine Residences.
The city was still brightly lit late at night.
Maia quickly made a call.
Someone picked up, and a deep male voice said, “Hey, I’m already at the bus stop. Where the hell are you? It’s getting late, and I'm not keen on sticking around long enough to attract any weirdos, okay?”
“Buck, you're two meters tall and weigh 120 kilograms. Do you seriously think anyone would dare to prey on you?” Soon enough, Maia pulled her car over at the bus stop.
“About time, Maia!” The tall and sturdy Buck got into the backseat of her car. “So where are we headed?”
“Mr. Linden’s house.”
“Mr. Linden? The finance manager of Starlight Entertainment?” Having received a name list from Maia, he had some knowledge of the top executives at the company.
“Yup,” Maia nodded.
“Hey, | saw the livestream about Zera. Your ex-husband had his assistant carry her to the ambulance. People are saying he didn’t carry her because he still has feelings for you. Are you

At the time, Buck had been a trainee nurse, but his large and wieldy frame made it difficult for him to perform his duties and he was constantly being told off by the head nurse. Maia often saw him crying because of this, so she took pity on him and invited him to work for her instead.
“Do you know why | was hospitalized?”
Buck shook his head. “You never told me.”
“| nearly died in a fire because of him.” Her tone was calm despite herself.
Hearing this, Buck fell silent for a moment before bursting into tears in the backseat.
“God, you've been through so much!”
As she stopped at a traffic light, Maia handed him a few tissues and chuckled. “What the hell are you crying for?” “lm a sensitive man, all right?”
Maia couldn't help but laugh.
Half an hour later, the car reached the villa in the southern part of the suburbs. Maia parked the car at the entrance of a villa. Buck got out and pressed the buzzer at the gate.
“Who is it?” the butler asked drowsily as he saw Maia and Buck at the gate.
“It's Maia from Starlight Entertainment.”
Hearing this, the butler stared at her, dumbfounded and at a loss for what to do.
Maia asked, “Aren’t you supposed to invite me in?”
Feeling nervous, the butler pressed the button beside him, and the gate slowly opened.
As Maia and Buck entered the living hall, Mr. Linden, who had been informed of her arrival,
rushed downstairs.
“Good evening, Mr. Linden.” Sitting down on the sofa, Maia saw him standing, on the stairs in his pajamas and waved.
“Ms. Maia,” Mr. Linden said, giving her an insincere smile. “What can | do for you at this hour?
“| have a gift for you, Mr. Linden.” Maia handed a folder to him. 273 +15 BONUS
Mr. Linden opened it and turned pale when he saw the stack of documents inside. Without thinking, he grabbed Maia’s hand earnestly.
“I'm sorry, Ms. Maia, | shouldn’t have embezzled the money. I'll take full legal responsibility for everything!”
As she had concrete evidence, Maia was not surprised that Mr. Linden would admit to his crimes so readily. However, she had not expected him to take the blame all by himself.Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
“So this is what you guys came up with? You'll do whatever it takes to save his ass?” Maia smiled. “What do you mean? I’ve no idea what you're talking about.” Feigning ignorance, Mr. Linden gave her a puzzled look.
Maia was amused. “Come on, Mr. Linden. Without my uncle’s permission, | doubt you would have dared to misappropriate a few hundred million dollars.”
“This has nothing to do with Mr. Phil, okay? Your uncle is innocent!”
“Oh, really?”
“Of course!” Mr. Linden nodded.
“Mr. Linden, I’ve no idea what my uncle has offered you, but | implore you to think about it. I'm here to give you a chance.” Mr. Linden couldn’t help but falter.
“Mr. Phil didn’t offer me anything. | did it all on my own-”
Maia interrupted, “I’ve gained control of Starlight Entertainment, Mr. Linden, and my uncle is going down. Do you seriously think you can count on him to back you up? Even if you don’t care about yourself, think about your family.”
