CHAPTER 7: LUNA?
CHAPTER 7: LUNA?
Alana’s POV
I opened my eyes for the second time to find the placement of the room still the same as it was when I was last awake. So it wasn’t a dream?
The only difference between my initial moment of consciousness and this was that the pain that I had felt for as long as I could remember was gradually being relieved.
I turned to find Axel still towering over me even from his sitting position, only that this time, his head was partially tilted to the right and his eyes were closed. The steady rising and falling of his broad chest indicated he was asleep.
Many thoughts crossed my mind within seconds. How did I come to be with the most perfect man walking the surface of the earth? One who barely knew me but had already substituted his alpha activities with babysitting me.
I inched closer to get a better view of his perfectly sculpted face, and a lung full of his inviting scent, but my action gave me away and his deep blue eyes met with mine.
“You’re awake,” his voice was groggy, but it all sounded like lullabies to my ears.
He took my hands in his and planted two soft kisses on each of the back of my hand. I couldn’t hold back a giggle from the pleasurable feel of his hands and lips on me.
“I am. How long was I out?”
“Just as long as you needed, beautiful,” he said while planting more kisses on my hands.
A foreign sensation that felt like a heartburn gripped my chest. The good kind, the very good kind.
And then it hit me. “The pack, we were attacked. Is everybody okay?” Panic grew in my gut.
“Yes. We’re okay. There were only a few casualties. Other than that, everything is back in order.” His jaw tensed which meant that this was a tough one for him.
The welfare of the pack members and their families was always a priority for Axel. Hence another reason why he was constantly busy and hardly ever seen out.
I had a lot of questions that needed answers and I didn’t want to pry him further, so I dropped it for the moment.
“Thank you for watching me,” I said, changing the topic.
Somewhere at the back of my mind, I feared that whatever we shared now would not last. I feared how the difference in our lives would throw difficulties at us, but I was more than grateful for the little I had experienced with Axel in my life.
“No need to thank me. That’s what a mate lives for.” A charming smile etched over his pink full lips and my breathing became erratic.
A soft knock came from the other side of the room, and an elderly she-wolf walked in through the opened door.
Her black hair which contrasted the white overall she had on was packed in a loose bun. She had a file in her hand and a warm smile was plastered across her face.
“Alpha,” she saluted to Axel with a curt bow.
“Doctor Keith, lovely to see you again.” Axel acknowledged her but his hands never left mine, and his gaze only wavered for no more than a second.
“I will have to examine the Luna to see how well she has healed.” She said, smiling in my direction and subtly giving Axel a cue to let go of my hand.
Luna? Where did that come from? Did the news already spread to the pack? I wasn’t ready for that. I didn’t know if I wanted it at all at the moment.
“Did she say Luna? How…”
“She’s only being respectful. Don’t worry about that for now and let Doctor Keith take a look at you, okay?”
I nodded in response.
“It’ll only be a minute,” she said to me.
Axel moved away from the bed and he stood behind the Doctor while she did the checkups on me.
She approached me and lifted my top just beneath my chest to expose my bruised ribs and a low growl erupted from behind us.
We both cast a surprised and unknowing look at Axel at his display.
“You may continue, Doctor,” he responded with a raspy clearing of his throat.
She turned her attention back to me and she placed a finger over a red bruise patch on my side.
“Now, what I want you to do is tell me when it starts to hurt, okay?”
“Okay,” I whispered.
She placed a second finger and pressed lightly on my skin. At first, I felt nothing, but as she increased the pressure, the pain kicked in and I responded with a whimper.
Axel released a louder growl and took a sharp stride forward.
The doctor halted abruptly, stood upright, and bared her neck in submission.
“You’re scaring her, Axel. You should let her do her job.” I giggled in an attempt to get him to lay off a bit on the possessive show. Another part of me liked being doted on by him.
“I’m sorry, Doctor, please continue. I’ll be over here.” He said as he walked over to the supplies cupboard and I immediately felt a wave of loneliness. I wanted him at arm's reach, for his huge frame to tower over me, and a fresh dose of my medicine seeping from his core.
The doctor spent a few minutes doing minor tests on different parts of my body that were injured before she packed up to leave.
“The wounds are healing quite nicely although very slowly for a werewolf, which is only because of the situation with your wolf. You'll be fine in no time, Luna.” She tried to sound reassuring. “I just have to run one more test on you to see if there are any nutrients that you'll need.” She paused before continuing. “After that, you would need tons of rest to allow your body to heal completely.”
“Okay, Doctor,” Axel responded. “We understand .” I could only nod as there was so much more on my mind.
“I’ll leave you two to it then.”
Axel resumed his position on the seat beside me and locked his hands with mine. He held a steady gaze on me as he spoke.
“You have no idea how lucky and happy I am to have found you.”
“You flatter me,” I responded with a chuckle. “I appreciate the treatment and all, but I have to return to the pack house now. I have chores that need to be done and there's nobody to cover for me for
that much. I have to leave now.”
“You do realize that as the Alpha’s mate, you are by extension the future Luna of Crescent Moon pack, right? And as such, you are relieved from doing any chore that does not mandate the Luna’s attention.” He said, wrinkling his nose at me. Content is property of NôvelDrama.Org.
“I haven’t agreed to be the Luna of the pack yet. I don’t know how it will work out. We have both lived in different worlds all our lives and I have never been a leader.”
“You can take as much time as you need, and you have nothing to worry about. Not chores or safety. Now baby, relax and let your body heal.”
“Okay,” I replied with a smack of my lips.
How was it so easy for Axel to reassure and calm me down?
