Chapter 80
Freya didn’t know what Elijah meant. She immediately said, “I’m not familiar with this place. It took me some time to find the pantry. I’m sure you’re thirsty. I’ll bring the coffee to your office right away.”
The woman looked slightly uneasy. In fact, it was she who detained Freya by striking up a conversation. Elijah disliked employees gossiping and whispering during working hours.
Did she just violate the rule?
Elijah cast a cold glance at the woman and walked away.
The woman’s heart was pounding; she thought she might be reprimanded.
Luckily, she wasn’t. She didn’t dare to gossip anymore and quickly returned to her work.
…
In the office, Freya placed the coffee on the desk. Elijah stood behind her, watching her figure. “Are you afraid others know your identity?”
Freya turned around.
Did he hear what she just said?
“I don’t want to cause you trouble.” Freya put on a smile.
Elijah sat down, his eyes deep. “How do you know that admitting to being my wife would cause trouble?”
Freya looked at him quietly for several seconds.
“When we got married, you laid down the condition that I couldn’t identify myself as your wife outside. I’m just following your rules and listening to you.”
“My rules are plentiful, and so are the words I spoke to you. Yet, I haven’t seen you adhere to much else. This, however, was strictly guarded against.” Elijah didn’t know why, but seeing her so actively distancing herself from him in public made him extremely uncomfortable.
It was as if she regarded him as a contagious disease.
Freya smiled. “What needs to be followed should be followed.”
“Really?” Elijah didn’t entirely believe her words.
“Of course.” Freya affirmed.
“You remember anything I said, and you listen to me. If I say, stay by my side, will you follow?” Elijah asked as he casually picked up his coffee. He was using this action to mask a trace of uncertainty.
Would this woman still want to escape?
Had she forgotten her former lover?
Freya lowered her eyes gently. “I will follow.”
A flicker of joy appeared on Elijah’s face.
“I have some work to handle. If you’re bored, read a book.”
Freya went to the bookshelf, but none of the books interested her. She preferred medical literature, while the books here were all about business.
“Your books are quite dull.”
Elijah raised an eyebrow, “Is that so? Your medical books aren’t dull?”
“No, they’re interesting. You’ll know when you read them.” Freya confidently stated.
“I have no interest in them.” Elijah sneered.
Freya pursed her lips, “You lack appreciation.”
“There are many rare books here, part of my collection. You don’t understand how to appreciate them.” Elijah didn’t accept her judgment.
Freya also didn’t back down. She found reading those books less appealing than sleeping. She nestled into the sofa, closing her eyes.
Elijah said, “Are you a pig?”
Freya wanted to retort. But she restrained herself since it was best to be prudent on someone else’s turf. After all, since she got pregnant, her appetite had improved, and she loved to sleep. She did have some pig-like characteristics.
She didn’t argue back, and Elijah, not used to her compliance, casually tossed a finance magazine from his desk.
Freya agilely avoided it. She laughed, “Didn’t hit me.”
Elijah sighed.
This woman was both mischievous and infuriating. However, for some reason, seeing her look pleased with herself was quite amusing.
…
The next day, as soon as Elijah arrived at the office, his secretary approached.NôvelDrama.Org is the owner.
“Mr Silverton, the information you asked for has been gathered. Yesterday, Miss Stone was almost kidnapped at the dance studio entrance. Fortunately, she managed to escape. Izzy Green appeared on the scene afterward. It seems she was the one behind the planned kidnapping. Also, she inflicted the injuries on her own face. Miss Stone’s car has a dashcam, and I’ve obtained the footage.”
Elijah hadn’t expected that Izzy Green would attempt to kidnap Freya. This crossed a line he couldn’t ignore.
“Arrange a meeting with Jasper Green for me.” His voice was cold and deep.
The secretary replied, “Certainly.”
When Jasper Green’s secretary informed him that Elijah wanted to meet, he was somewhat surprised but agreed without much thought. They scheduled a meeting at a restaurant for lunch.
During the meal, Jasper Green began, “You’re not inviting me for a business collaboration, are you?”
Elijah, without changing his expression, slowly chewed his food. After swallowing, he took a sip of water and leisurely spoke.
“If there’s a suitable opportunity, I’d naturally be willing to collaborate with Mr. Green. However, today, I invited you for a different matter.”
Elijah pushed the tablet with the video evidence towards Jasper Green.
“What is this?” Jasper Green looked puzzled.
“Open and see,” Elijah said.
Jasper Green glanced at him, sensing a foreboding, but still opened the tablet. He quickly saw the content of the video, in which his daughter, slapping herself across the face. And the sound was clear in the quiet space.
Jasper Green’s face turned red with embarrassment. He had lost the most considerable face, most likely due to his daughter.
“Freya went through was a misunderstanding. Without any background or support, she dared not speak up and could only apologize. She was willing to let things go peacefully, but I can’t. My people were wronged, and I must seek justice for them. So, Mr Green, you have to give me an explanation, or this matter won’t end.”
Jasper Green’s hand trembled with visible veins. He was furious and embarrassed.
“I’ll have my daughter personally apologize to Miss Stone.”
Elijah was dissatisfied with that response.
“Your daughter still wanted to kidnap her. I don’t know if it was your instruction.”
“What?” Jasper Green almost jumped up, wondering how much his daughter had hidden from him.
“Kidnapping is a serious crime. Be careful with your words.”
Jasper Green knew his daughter was willful, proud, and even arrogant. But kidnapping? That was something she wouldn’t dare to do.
Elijah had prepared for this meeting. There was clear surveillance footage from the dance studio entrance, showing Freya being grabbed, and shortly after, Izzy Green’s appearance.
Jasper Green had no words to say.
“I will give you an explanation for this matter.” Having said that, Jasper Green got up and left. He returned home with a mix of anger and embarrassment. Despite his age, he felt manipulated by his own daughter.
“Dad, you’re back…”
