Chapter 197
Chapter 197
Suddenly, the deep voice of a man was heard in the ward.
Frightened, Angeline turned to see Evander upon regaining her senses.
His facial features were still charming and defined despite his pale complexion. A thick layer of gauze was wrapped on his left arm, concealing his wound.
“Why are you here?”
An apologetic expression appeared on Angeline’s face when she saw him. “I was thinking of dropping by later to visit you. Thank you for saving us. If it weren’t for you, I don’t know if I would still be alive.”
Evander fell silent. His cold gaze fell on the unconscious child on the bed.
With a serious tone, he asked, “You’ve gone through so much trouble just to look for this child?”
Distress surfaced in Angeline’s eyes. “Yes. He’s about the same age as Floretta but was beaten up so badly. It’s tragic.”
Evander furrowed his brows as he gazed at the child’s injuries.
A tender look filled his eyes while he said softly, “He has beautiful features. His nose looks like yours.”
In actuality, Evander wasn’t happy about the child’s existence, for he knew the child would only widen the gap between him and Angeline.
However, as a father, he had some compassion and felt sorry for this pathetic child.
Hearing what Evander said, Angeline turned pale. “That doesn’t sound like something you would usually say.”
“Have you taken a DNA test?”
“Not yet.”
Angeline shook her head as she looked away and replied, “I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I would have to at least wait for the child to regain consciousness first.”
“You have Jonathan to make these decisions with you. You don’t have to tell me.”
All of a sudden, Evander’s tone turned cold and distant as he turned away from Angeline. It was as if they were strangers.
“I’m just here to remind you to make all the necessary preparations before making a decision. Don’t repeat your previous mistakes.”
“Okay, I understand.”
Before Angeline could finish her sentence, Evander had already turned to leave the ward, his footsteps composed and steady.
He didn’t say anything else, let alone express concern for her injuries like how he did before.
It seemed like he was really just there to visit the child.
Realizing something was off, Angeline felt distressed. It was as though a huge part of her heart was torn away, and she felt empty.
“Wait!”
Instinctively, she stood up from where she was and ran out of the ward.
Evander stopped in his tracks, but he didn’t turn around.
“What is it?”
Angeline cleared her throat. Awkwardly, she said, “Thank you so much for saving me. I should be taking care of your injury personally, but the child needs me too…”
“You don’t have to. Just take care of the child.”
Evander’s tone was frosty, as though he did not care about her at all.
“Do you have anything else to say?” he asked.
Angeline tried to suppress the sudden pain in her heart as she spoke. “No, there’s nothing else. Please call me if you need anything, and I will not disturb you unless necessary, Mr. Golding.”
Mr. Golding.
Evander could feel his heart lurch when he heard the way she called him. Clenching his fists, disappointment appeared in his eyes.
He was expecting Angeline to give him an explanation, telling him that there was nothing going on between her and Jonathan and that they were merely friends.
Alas, she didn’t say anything after a long time.
All the while, he was being delusional and had expected too much from her. C0pyright © 2024 Nôv)(elDrama.Org.
Angeline watched as Evander disappeared at the end of the corridor. Her eyes reddened, and she lifted her hand to fan her eyes, preventing her tears from falling.
“Why do you do this to yourself? You could’ve seized the chance to explain to Mr. Golding just now. You should’ve told him the reason behind the breakup!” Nancy emerged from the corner and placed her hand on Angeline’s shoulder, sighing.
“Forget it.”
Angeline bit her lip until it turned pale and smiled bitterly.
“I seriously can’t stand the two of you.”
Nancy massaged her brows and felt frustrated with them.
The two of them tend to keep their feelings bottled up and refuse to share them with anyone. Conflict is bound to happen if this carries on.
“By the way, how are things with the lawyer?”
“I’ve communicated with Mr. Clarke just now. He said that since this case has substantial witnesses and evidence, it should be an easy one. With just a little effort, the drunkard will be sentenced to life imprisonment.”
“All right. Please help me thank Mr. Clarke.”
The look in Angeline’s eyes turned cold as she said hatefully, “I will also need Mr. Clarke’s help to arrange an appointment for me to meet with the child’s adoptive parents, please.”
“That’s not a problem. However, you must first recuperate and get better. Otherwise, I will not allow you to go anywhere,” said Nancy, keeping a straight face. That was her only condition and there was no room for negotiation.
“Okay, I know. I’ll take good care of myself.”
Feeling at ease for having such a good friend, Angeline hugged Nancy. After being friends for so many years, she didn’t have to say anything else for the latter to understand how grateful she was to her.
When they returned to the child’s ward, Angeline continued wiping him clean. She then took a pair of scissors to cut a few strands of the child’s hair before placing them into a transparent bag.
Evander was right. She must be well prepared before making decisions.
After taking everything she needed, she headed to the obstetrics department and passed the hair to the doctor.
“I would like to do a DNA test. How long will it take for the results to be out?”
The doctor took the bag containing the strands of hair and gave it a look. He then slowly explained, “It would usually take around three days for the result to be out.”
“Okay, thank you.”
She was looking forward to knowing the results, but at the same time, she was uneasy.
However, the fact that the child she had been looking for after all these years was still alive and well was enough to put her heart at ease. No matter what she had to face in the future, she would be at ease as long as the child was fine.
With those thoughts in mind, Angeline steeled herself and entered the child’s ward. However, unbeknownst to her, a figure hiding around the corner had heard the whole conversation between her and the doctor.
A sinister look appeared in the person’s eyes as he took out his phone and dialed a familiar number.
The call was picked up quickly after a few beeps.
The man said in a low voice, “Ms. Sherrock, everything is going according to plan. We can make our move now.”
As night fell, colorful neon lights lit up the bustling street.
Hallsbay’s nightlife had just begun.
The sharp noise of tires screeching was heard in front of a bar entrance. A man in a suit and leather shoes quickly alighted from the black car. Sweating profusely as he ran, he rushed into the bar and grabbed hold of the manager, asking, “Where is Mr. Golding?”
When the manager saw him, he immediately answered respectfully, “Mr. Golding, you’re finally here! Mr. Golding had a lot to drink. The wound on his arm was torn open, but we didn’t dare stop him.”
“Mr. Golding is hurt? Quick, bring me to him!”
Sylas went pale from fright. He had just taken a shower in the bathroom and was about to retire to his bedroom, but when he checked his phone, there were a few missed calls from the bar manager.
He quickly called back and found out that Evander had gotten intoxicated at the bar.
After so many years as a successful businessman, Evander had never done anything so foolish as getting himself drunk at a bar. Sylas wondered what had gotten into him, but deep down, he knew it was related to Angeline.
