Chapter 167
Chapter 167
Jareth had skedaddled. Mrs. Jareth was overseas nursing her health and hadn’t returned yet. Glynnis’s plan to win over her future mother–in–law had gone up in smoke for now.
Still, thinking about how Jareth had accepted her gift, she was over the moon. She reckoned she’d have a hard time catching some Z’s tonight.
in the afternoon, Jareth and Edith were under a ma**ive plane tree in the Jareth family’s backyard, enjoying the autumn scenery and sipping afternoon
tea
“When did you meet Evadne, Edith?” Glynnis was on tenterhooks. She had a real beef with Evadne.
“I ran into her at the music concert my mentor held the day before yesterday.” Edith took a sip of her coffee in a laid–back manner. She glanced at her and asked, “Sounds like you and Evadne have had a bit of a barney.”
“Humph, a barney? I can’t stand the sight of her!”
“That bad, huh?”
“Edith, you’ve been away from home for a while. There’s a lot you don’t know.” Glynnis blurted out angrily, “Evadne is like a demon that jumped out of a rock, stirring up trouble and making my brother and your brother run around in circles! Because of this woman, our Abernathy family is in a real pickle!”
“What? My brother fancies her?” Edith’s eyes dimmed.
“Jareth was lured by that tramp! Evadne is a dab hand at seducing men, she’s like a vixen!” Glynnis was so angry her face was beet red, “Thankfully, they’re not as close now. I reckon the vixen has a new target.”
“My brother isn’t easy picking for any woman. He’s always been the playboy, not the other way around. Evadne had been given the heave–ho by my brother. He’d never take a fancy to the same woman again. She was just a plaything. He’d never fall for her, I know him too well.”
Edith noticed that Glynnis looked a bit off, and quickly comforted, “But you’re different, Glynnis. Our families have always been close, and with me here, I’ll make sure you win my brother over.”
“Edith! My dear Edith!” Glynnis was moved to tears, feeling like she’d found a lifeline to happiness.
“So what’s the deal with Evadne and Thad?”
This was what Edith really cared about.
“Mentioning that just makes my blood boil!” Glynnis said angrily, “She is Thaddeus’s ex–wife!”
“What did you say?” Edith stood up abruptly, her expensive cup dropping onto the lawn, “Ex–wife? How is that possible? Didn’t Thaddeus break up with Acacia? He hasn’t even been married. How could he have an ex–wife?”
“Well, you didn’t know this, but they got married in secret and just got divorced a while ago. And it was my grandfather who officiated it.”
Seeing that Edith had a crush on Thaddeus, Glynnis exaggerated the truth, “They’re divorced, but there are still feelings. Acacia has made a fuss twice, but couldn’t make Thad totally give up on Evadne! Although Acacia brought it on herself, can he say that leaving Acacia had nothing to do with that tramp Evadne?”
This time Edith was really peeved.
No wonder Thaddeus was practically drooling over that woman that day!
Acacia had given over a decade to this man and didn’t get him. What made that woman worthy of being Thaddeus’s wife? What gave her the right?
Edith felt a pang of jealousy, gritted her teeth and said, “Glynnis, you wouldn’t mind me becoming your sister–in–law, would you?”
Glynnis’s eyes widened.
This girl really didn’t treat her like an outsider!
‘Of course not! Compared to that cold–hearted tramp Acacia, I’d rather you become my brother’s wife!” Glynnis quickly voiced her stance.
*Since we both have clear targets, why not form an alliance and present a united front, sound good?”
Edith walked up to Glynnis, bent down, and put her hands heavily on her shoulders, “I’ll help you win my brother over, you help me marry Thad, deal?”
“Edith, you know my family situation, Thad and I are half–siblings, we’re not as close as you and your brother. I’m afraid I’m willing but unable!”
Glynnis was being sincere.
“But Mr. Frederic and Elspeth both adore you, and you can help me pa** on information and be my mole. If we team up, we can definitely take on Evadne. Overall the pros outweigh the cons!” Edith’s eyes lit up with hope.
As soon as Glynnis heard that they’d be taking on Evadne, she was raring to go, “Alright, let’s form an alliance! Let’s see how that little miss can still strut her stuff!”
Edith crossed her arms, a confident grin on her face.
From a young age, her mom and brother spoiled her rotten. She was cla**mates with royalty and won international awards left and right. Her whole life had been spent in the spotlight.
She never lost to anyone and never missed out on anything she wanted.
“I’m saving my hand for my woman.”
This time, she won’t miss out on Thad, she’ll definitely marry him.
His hand was hers to hold!
In a blink of an eye, it was time to return to Skyrim.
12:08
In order to get back in time for the dinner, Evadne was busy all day working, approving documents, attending meetings, and discussing wedding planning. She was swamped.
But, the outcome was very satisfactory.
Under Evadne’s guidance, Ada Ang’s wedding planning was finally completed after more than ten days and nights!
When they heard Evadne say “approved“, everyone cheered. Their joy was no less than getting a year–end bonus.
Working with Evadne, the employees needed both mental and physical toughness, or else someone would definitely drop out halfway.
However, throughout this period, no one complained and no one gave up.
Despite her high position, Evadne was hands–on. Even though she was the daughter of the Ashbourne family, she was never pretentious. She worked as much as everyone else and provided plenty of meals, coffee, and snacks, treating everyone fairly.
Even though she was a stickler for perfection and had high standards, she was good with words and full of innovation. Whenever the team hit a snag, she could always come up with solutions on the spot, earning everyone’s praise and admiration.
“Guys, you’ve been working your butts off lately. Everyone go take a three–day break, recharge your batteries, and then go pick up a couple of lavish buffet coupons from the Director of Food Services. Treat yourselves. I’ve been swamped lately, so I won’t be organizing a dinner get–together.”
Evadne stood at the head of the oval–shaped conference table, her graceful arms resting on the edge, smiling around at everyone, “Once we wrap up the Ada Ang project, there will not only be bonuses and vacations, but also the overseas trips you guys have been dreaming of can be put on the agenda.
I’ll foot the bill for you to enjoy to your heart’s content, and I’m not joking!”
“Thank you, President Ashbourne!” Everyone cheered and waved. All rights © NôvelDrama.Org.
Even though the goal wasn’t reached yet, with Evadne’s promise, everyone was filled with anticipation.
It was already five in the afternoon when the meeting ended.
“Ms. Evadne, I have your dinner dress ready in the changing room. Would you like to change now?” Jason asked softly as he followed her.
“No need to change. Mr. Jeff watched me grow up. He and Emeric are good friends. He’s seen all my phases when I was a kid.”
Seeing it was about time, Evadne and Jason headed for the executive elevator.
As the elevator descended, she adjusted her hair in the reflection of the mirrored doors, then took out a lipstick and carefully applied it to her soft lips. Like the finishing touch to a painting, it immediately made her look more vibrant.
Jason watched her silently dolling herself up, a nervous smile tugging at his lips.
So it turned out that the seemingly formidable Ms. Evadne had a soft and sweet girl living inside her.
They both were lost in their own worlds, not noticing the elevator had reached the first floor.
Ding.
The elevator doors opened.
A familiar scent of violets flooded in. It was warm and profound, elegant and mesmerizing.
Only Avery could have such a scent.
Sure enough, Evadne looked up to meet Avery’s deep gaze.
Her pupils constricted slightly, her hand trembled, and the carefully applied lipstick suddenly smudged, leaving a bright red mark.
Avery smiled faintly, looking affectionately at her surprised expression.
“Ms. Evadne, I’m here to take you home.”
