Chapter 0428
Chapter 0428
Harley relaxed her stance, and Candice nodded in agreement, following her to the café.
"Let's hear it." Harley glanced at the time and then focused her attention on Candice.
Seeing the scene, Zoe, who had been by Harley’s side all along, immediately took out a notebook and earnestly looked at Candice. "Ms. Renault, please tell us the specific situation."
Candice's expression was solemn. She lowered her eyelids, organized her words as best as she could, and explained the sequence of events to Harley in the clearest terms possible.
After she finished, she paused and added, "Ms. Zott, I have all the evidence, and everything I've said is true."
Harley looked up, her gaze scrutinizing. "Since you have solid evidence, why do you need me? If what you've said is all true, the outcome of this case would be the same no matter who handles it." Belongs © to NôvelDrama.Org.
"Because the lawyer the other party hired is Quil." Candice's eyes showed no embarrassment or panic at being exposed. Her gaze was bright and clear. "He's the best at overturning cases. I can't take the risk."
Harley remained silent and looked at her, assessing her as if she didn't fully believe what Candice was saying.
Candice was actually nervous as she subtly twisted her fingers. As she had said, she couldn't take any risks. This was her only chance. She straightened her back under Harley's scrutiny.
Harley was as serious as her reputation suggested, stern-faced with no trace of emotion. When she spoke or acted, she carried a sense of decisive authority.
Candice pursed her lips and spoke, "Ms. Zott, I can agree to any conditions you have, as long as you're willing to help me with this lawsuit."
Her eyes were sincere, carrying a subtle plea and expectation.
Harley looked at her for a long while before finally saying, "Bring the specific case materials to the law firm at 2:10 this afternoon. I won't wait if you're late."
With that, she got up and left swiftly.
"Ms. Zott hates people who lack punctuality. You'd better hurry back and prepare," Zoe whispered before she left too.
Candice sat where she was, only realizing what had happened after a moment, and then immediately got up to get ready.
All the materials were in the villa, and she had to go back to get them. However, Southern Cross Firm was in the southeast of the city, opposite to where she was.
By the time she arrived at Southern Cross Firm, it was already two o'clock.
Yana had come with her. When Candice went back to the villa, Yana had been playing games in the living room. Knowing she was short on time, Yana offered to drive her to Southern Cross Firm.
Fortunately, after Harley reviewed the materials, she didn't hesitate for long before agreeing, directly instructing Candice to handle the procedures.
Candice's heart finally calmed down a bit.
Zoe led them through the building, and Yana asked her curiously, "Is Ms. Zott usually this easy to talk to? I thought she would surely find an excuse to refuse."
"It's probably because of Quil,” Zoe replied. “Ms. Zott has always wanted to go against him."
Candice didn't care why Harley was willing to take the case, as long as she was willing to handle it.
It wasn't until all the procedures were completed at the law firm and Candice followed Yana out that she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Can you relax a bit now after seeing Ms. Zott?" Yana asked with a smile, but before Candice could respond, her phone rang with a call from Jackson.
"Yvonne has tried to commit suicide and has been taken to the hospital."
Candice was shocked. She almost dropped her phone, but Yana was there to support her.
-
When Candice arrived at the hospital, Jackson and several policemen were there. Jackson’s expression was troubled as Candice approached.
"Candice, listen to me. You need to prepare yourself. Yvonne might have really had some mental health problems. It's still under investigation, you..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but Candice knew what he meant.
If Yvonne was diagnosed with mental health problems, then Sonia could easily claim that Candice had framed her.
Candice clenched her fists, feeling a bit dizzy, but she still forced herself to say, "I'll go in and see her."
Yvonne was in the ward, her head wrapped in a large bandage, reportedly self-inflicted from hitting it with a stool. She was muttering something, and as Candice walked in, she heard her saying, "I
was wrong."
Yvonne was immersed in her own world, completely unaware of Candice's presence. Candice looked at her with lowered eyes for a while before speaking up, "Yvonne."
Yvonne paused, her fingers trembling as she fiddled with them.
"I know you're pretending," Candice said as she stopped by the bedside.
Yvonne's hands trembled even more violently, and her murmuring grew louder, as if intentionally drowning out Candice's voice.
"Yvonne!" Candice raised her voice sharply. "What's the point of pretending to be crazy and foolish now?!"
She had just come from Harley's place and had earnestly assured her of the solid evidence, and now Yvonne had suddenly pulled this stunt.
Seeing Yvonne's cowering appearance, anger surged in Candice's heart. She wanted to tear open Yvonne's head and see what was inside.
Yvonne suddenly got up from the bed. She knelt in front of Candice, trembling as she held her hands. "Candice, can you forgive me? Please, I beg you to forgive me."
Candice looked at Yvonne, the fire in her heart still raging.
Suddenly, Yvonne slapped herself repeatedly, her voice hoarse as she pleaded, "I beg you to forgive me, Candice. I was wrong, I really was. It's my fault for hurting you, hurting Peach, and hurting my father too! I did it all on my own. I should die.."
Yvonne slowly stopped slapping herself and began to curl up again.
She looked pitiful. Her hair was white, and she looked thirty years older than she was. She curled up in bed as if she had suffered a great grievance.
However, as Candice looked at her, she didn’t feel pity or sadness, but rather an unnamed anger.
‘Yvonne knows she has done wrong now?’ Candice thought to herself. ‘What use is that? Because of her stupidity, her selfishness, grandfather is already dead!’
Candice watched her crying bitterly with cold eyes, said nothing, and turned to leave.
Jackson was waiting at the door. Seeing her coming out, he asked softly, "Are you okay?"
She didn't answer. Her phone screen lit up.
She didn't check whose call it was as she pursed her lips and moved aside to answer the phone.
She wasn't in a good mood now; she needed peace and quiet.
Just as she turned the corner of the hospital, a deep, casual voice came from her phone.
"Did you go to see Harley?" Alex asked.
Candice stilled. "How did you know?"
Alex toyed with the pen in his hand, looking at the blue sky outside. His voice lacked any particular tone as he said, "Aether Corporation's legal affairs have been handled by Southern Cross Firm recently, and Harley is in charge."
