“Millie, are you threatening me now?” He narrowed his eyes, and they glinted dangerously.
Millie straightened up and put on a serious face. “I swear to God I do not intend to threaten you.”
She wasn’t crazy. She wouldn’t admit to threatening him in his face.
His expression stiffened. He seemed really mad. Standing up, he placed a thick document on the table. “Ms. Caldwell, these are the losses that my company suffered.”
Fixing an icy glare on her, he stated, “I look forward to your compensation, or we shall meet in court.”
Frowning, Millie flipped through the invoices and promptly went blank from shock.
What was wrong with Winston? How could he count the loss in cafeteria sales due to employee absence? What a petty man!
Marvin’s words echoed in her head. “Think carefully. He won’t go hard on you because you’re his wife, unlike me, an outsider. Isn’t that right?”
Hah!
Glaring at him, she barked, “You capitalist pig!”
“You deserve it.” Smiling, he proceeded to leave but stopped in his tracks as a thought crossed his mind.
He turned and addressed her, “Pay up on time, or things will get really ugly if we go to court. It’s especially so for you, Ms. Caldwell.”
She stared at him in frustration. He left withou turning back.
She then flipped through the thick document on the compensation. The total amount was listed on the last page–34 million dollars!
She was astounded by the figure. Another line was printed under the total amount. “The claimant agreed to a 50% discount on the final compensation, considering Ms. Caldwell is the claimant’s wife.”
Gritting her teeth, she thought, “Oh, great! Should I thank him for that generous discount, huh?”
Slamming her fist on the table, she took a seat and discovered that he had ordered her favorite breakfast foods–hashbrowns, pancakes, french toast, and more.
She had planned to eat breakfast but decided to leave when she recalled his scowl.
To her surprise, the waiter entered her room with a smile. “How do you do, Ms. Caldwell? Mr. Greer has asked to charge the breakfast to your card.”
Millie was rendered speechless and cursed him in her mind, “Winston Greer, you motherfucker!”
No, charge him!” she growled.
“I’m sorry. You must pay for the breakfast, Ms. Caldwell.” Nodding, the waiter stated, “Mr. Greer says we can hold you until you pay up. Please don’t make it difficult for me.”
Millie had no choice but to bow to Winston’s instructions. Staring vacantly at the waiter, she finally sighed and gave in. © 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
After paying, she decided to tuck in. Why would she skip the breakfast that she paid for?
At that thought, she unblocked Winston’s number and sent him a text. “How could you do this to your legal spouse when we’re not yet divorced? Do you not have a heart?”
He replied, “Oh, do you finally see yourself as my wife? Aren’t you supposed to be an ex–wife, Ms. Caldwell?”
Biting her lip, she tightened her grip on her phone.
He retorted, “An eye for an eye. Don’t tell me you’re mad.”
She snickered and rolled her eyes. He had indeed sounded more and more bitchy after spending more time around Joanna!
She sneered and wrote, “No, I’m not mad. I feel grateful for having such a reasonable ex–husband!” After texting him, she blocked his number. He was about to text her when he realized he had been blocked again.
Speechless, he thought, “She is really something!”
“Mr. Greer, do remember that we are scheduled to welcome our foreign business partners at the Grand Santiago Hotel tonight,” Eli suddenly reminded Winston.
Winston grunted and turned off his phone. He massaged his forehead, looking visibly exhausted.
When Millie left work that night, she received a text from Terrence. “Don’t forget to stop by the hotel.
Sighing, she was reluctant to go, but she obeyed his orders anyway.
